This was Alexander's debut single. It was produced and written by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis.
It debuted on the R&B chart in mid-February of 1985 and went on to peak at #11 there. It also reached #1 on the Bubbling Under hot 100.
This one is definitely my favorite single by him it has that classic Minneapolis sound to it. Cherrelle is also featured (although uncredited) on this one. This is also very similar in sound to her single (which hit the previous year) "Didn't Mean to Turn You On".
There are also some hints of The Time's debut single ("Get it Up").

The video makes him seem like a dirtbag lmao, it's one of my least favorite songs by him.

There are also some hints of The Time's debut single ("Get it Up"). Yes, (as a kid anyway couldn't ID the song) I knew what this sounded like way back in the Spring of 1985.

His first two albums are both excellent from beginning to end. Great song.
Yarbrough & Peoples' "Guilty," which was an answer record to this one, performed even better going to #2 R&B the following year.

Love this, definitely prefer the long ass album version to the single edit though. His first three albums were all pretty flawless IMO. JJ and TL consistently provided him great material.
