I don't know if this is true or has been discussed but I read on Tumblr that "How Will I Know" was originally meant for Janet Jackson. I think it would've been a hit regardless of Whitney or Janet singing it at the time. It's true. Here is an excerpt of an interview with Shannon Rubicam (of Boy Meets Girl) who co-wrote the song: Q: I don't think many people know that you are responsible for two of Whitney Houston's biggest hit songs. First, please tell us the story of "How Will I Know". What is the back story of how it was conceived and written? Please tell us about how a song originally written for Janet Jackson ended up being on the debut album for Whitney Houston instead. Did you feel you had something special after you had written it? Shannon: We had signed with Almo Irving Publishing company in L.A. and were requested to write a song for submission to Janet Jackson, who was at the time writing and recording a new album. Unbeknownst to anyone, she was in the process of drastically changing her sound for what would become her groundbreaking Control album. We wrote and submitted "How Will I Know" and it was rejected as not being right for her project - and I agree it would have been woefully out of place with that material. The song was then sent to Clive Davis who was looking for songs for his brand new protege whose name nobody recognized. Clive loved the song, sent it on to Narada Michael Walden to produce; Narada made some changes to the music, we added more verse lyrics, and Whitney made the whole thing soar with her incredible voice. When a friend who worked with Narada called on the phone one day and played the song over the speakers we freaked out with joy! That voice, that powerful track, the hook...it all aligned with the stars in the heavens so that there was nothing to stop it.

Charli XCX originally wrote "Boom Clap" for Hilary Duff, but Hilary turned it down stating that it wasn't "cool enough for her". End result, Charli has a breakthrough hit with the song. Yeah, "All About You" an "Chasing the Sun" are REALLY cool, Hilary...

I guess it would have been for BLACKOUT and BoA got it instead.

Kanye West made the "Gold Digger" beat for Shawnna, and she passed on it. The original lyrics on the reference track were, "I ain't sayin' I'm a gold digger, but I a messin' with no broke n*ggas." Kanye kept the beat, revamped the lyrics, and the rest is history.
Ariana Grande's "Break Free" was intended for Austin Mahone, but he never got around to recording it.

Disease-Matchbox 20 Rob Thomas was helping to write Mick Jagger's new record and sent him several singles. This was the only one he sent back saying that it sounded better with Rob singing it.

Revealed during a Ryan Seacrest interview I believe, Justin Timberlake said he wrote "Gone" for Michael Jackson to sing it but his camp turned it down. Then, after the single was released, MJ called Justin who remembers: “[He] said that he wanted to cut the record, but he wanted it to be a duet between himself and I. And I said, ‘It’s already out. We’ve already cut this song as an 'NSync record.’ I’m on the phone, I’m literally punching myself in the face, because I said, ‘I can’t do that. Could we do an 'NSync featuring Michael Jackson? Or Michael Jackson featuring 'NSync?’ And he was very absolute about the fact that he wanted it to be a duet between himself and I.”

Lick My Lips by Katharine McPhee was written for Janet Jackson. Just wondering where did you read or hear that? I only ask because in the "Lick My Lips" thread over at CHR it was said a couple of times one of the writers said it was written for Katherine.

Hard to believe but the song Lean On was originally supposed to be sang by Rhianna. It was also offered to Nicki Minaj, but when both artists passed, they gave it to MO.

Brandy now singing Rain I could see/would love but that song would've been soooo sexually charged for Moesha.

Major Lazer f/Mo - Lean On
Rejected by both Rihanna and Nicki Minaj.
Justin Timberlake - Rock Your Body
Rejected by Michael Jackson as wel as about half of Justin's debut album. (Kinda similar to Toni Braxton's debut was full of Anita Baker rejects)
Michael Jackson - Bad
Michael originally wanted the song to be a duet with Prince, however Prince passed on it because he was not a fan of the lyrics.
Sia - Alive
Co-written with Adele intended for her album. When she decided not to use it, she let Sia have it.

Beyoncé - Pretty Hurts
Sia wrote the song intended for Katy Perry, but she never responded to it. Sia then offered it to Rihanna, whose management team sat on it. She then offered it to Beyonce who immediately accepted.

In a recent Ebony interview, Usher revealed that Tevin Campbell's entire album I'm Ready was originally written specifically for Usher. However, LA Reid and Babyface had a falling out around this time, and Babyface gave the album to Tevin instead; it went on to be the peak of Tevin's career. Hard to believe but the song Lean On was originally supposed to be sang by Rhianna. It was also offered to Nicki Minaj, but when both artists passed, they gave it to MO. Lmao at Nicki Minaj doing it. It's totally not her style, I can see why she passed The version pitched to Rihanna and Nicki had a heavier island/reggae sound (of which you can still slightly hear the influence); Chainsmokers tweaked the song for the final version with MO. I'm trying to wrap my mind around how anyone thought Beyonce would be interested in All About That Bass. That's not her type of song at all unless the only Bey song you have ever heard is Check On It.

Since no one mentioned it, Sia's Cheap Thrills was originally written for Rihanna. I believe I also read Ed wrote Shape Of You for Rihanna, as well
