The Way by Ariana Grande was co written by Jordin Sparks and was supposed to be her single in February . however it was not her choice but her labels to give it away. This is one is so interesting. It's proof that winning a show like Idol is such a gift and a curse. You really have to read those contracts that you sign! If not, your label owns you.

I honestly feel bad for Jordin Sparks because it's been half a decade since she's released an album. She revealed that she was ready to release one, but her label refused to support the album since she was also starting on "Celebrate" at the time (her movie with Whitney Houston), so she had to start back at square one once the movie ended. I miss her pop gems. "Battlefield" (the single) is still a constant listen for me in the car. Ok sorry mini-tangent over carry on.

Poor Leona Lewis. She and her team have passed up so many hits.

I've Had The Time Of My Life was intended for Donna Summer and ???. It's Raining Men was offered to Donna Summer, Diana Ross and I believe Babs. They all rejected it and it ended up being a smash for The Weather Girls.

Jesse McCartney - Back Together
Jesse originally worked on the song for Hot Chelle Rae, but then decided he wanted to use the song for himself.

This thread is why I do not respect people who don't write their songs but call themselves artists. Please.

Not really a rejection but "Follow Your Arrow" almost went to Katy Perry! So glad that didn't happen. I mean, Katy has several songs I enjoy despite her singing them, but definitely love Kacey's voice on that one.

Pharrell Williams - Happy
Pharrell's retirement fund was originally meant for Cee-Lo Green. He recorded the song, but TPTB felt the song didn't suit him.

The story told by Miranda is that Blake was listening to demos for his next album, and THTBM was one. Miranda was with him, and she had such a strong reaction to the song she "cried the whole way home from Texas" (her hometown), when she heard it for the first time. So, Blake gave it to her, basically :)

'N Sync - Gone
The song was written for Michael Jackson, but according to reports, he never heard the demo. Justin Timberlake then kept the song for 'N Sync.

Some more Idol ones:
Kris Allen - Live Like We're Dying
The song was originally recorded by The Script, but it didn't make their album. The song later was used as a bonus track in Japan.
Jordin Sparks - Battlefield
Was originally written with Christina Aguilera in mind. The song was also considered for Leona Lewis and the Backstreet Boys.
Carrie Underwood - Before He Cheats
The song was intended for Gretchen Wilson, but she never got the pitch as the song was offered to Carrie after she won Idol.

Justin Bieber's "Beauty And A Beat" was actually written by Zedd and originally set to be on Clarity, but he didn't feel like it matched the album's style, so he gave it to Bieber.
That era would have lasted more than two singles pre-rerelease if BAAB was on the album. It would count for his and Bieber's catalog.

That would've been kinda interesting, did he actually do the beat to that still?

Timber was originally supposed to feature Rihanna instead of Ke$ha but she turned it down to do Shakira's Can't Remember to Forget You instead.
Shakira was allegedly offered We Found Love before Rihanna took it. She was also offered a slot on Pitbull's Give Me Everything but turned it down.

"Can't Get You Out of My Head" was offered to Sophie Ellis-Bextor but she passed on it and it was given to Kylie Minogue. Probably the worst decision of her career LOOOLL

Sia said in her recent interview with Howard Stern that she pitched 'Pretty Hurts' to Katy Perry, who never replied, then it was given to Rihanna, but her team never paid for it and Beyoncé eventually took it up.

Charli XCX originally wrote "Boom Clap" for Hilary Duff, but Hilary turned it down stating that it wasn't "cool enough for her". End result, Charli has a breakthrough hit with the song.

Jessie had intended to record it herself, however when the song was finished, she felt it wasn't "edgy" enough, so she passed it to Miley.

This is not really a case in which the song was rejected by the artist, but by the record label. Belinda Carlisle has said in many occasions that she loved "Falling Into You" and she demoed the song, was very happy about it, but the record label thought it was awful and rejected it. She then listened to the Celine hit while she was in France in a gas station...

Not sure if this was mentioned but Vicki Lawrence's "The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia" was originally offered to Cher, but Sonny Bono turned it down. Cher had no idea the song was even offered to her until years later.

I don't know if this is true or has been discussed but I read on Tumblr that "How Will I Know" was originally meant for Janet Jackson. I think it would've been a hit regardless of Whitney or Janet singing it at the time.
