Pumped Up Kicks is one of the most surprising smashes of the last few years. The lyrical content, the sound, and the artist are all factors that don't seem to point to a hit.

Pumped Up Kicks is one of the most surprising smashes of the last few years. The lyrical content, the sound, and the artist are all factors that don't seem to point to a hit. I disagree. I think quite the opposite. I think the lyrical content and the sound and the artist are all factors that I think point to an obvious hit. It took me exactly 2 seconds to know this song was going to hit big. An MTV awards performance could seal the deal. |

I definitely think the lyrical content is helping "Pumped Up Kicks". The lyrics are practically indecipherable, but people have seemed to figure out what the song is about by word of mouth anyway. The creepy, bizarre lyrics backed by the bright, sunny beat and melody give it a certain allure. Most importantly, the song has an addictive bassline and the chorus hooks you immediately. I don't think it's that big of a surprise that the song has managed to cross over.

^Yes- I like the contrast in the theme and sound for "Pumped Up Kicks." Had it been set to a darker arrangement/sound, it more than likely would not have had the impact it's currently making.

Turns out Dev's latest is becoming an inevitable breakout smash after all.
It sure took its time. It's been a staple in clubs and dance playlists for months now. I still remember right at the beginning of the summer many expressing dismay over a Kanye West re-mix being serviced as the official radio edit of "In The Dark". Now it seems like that version has even abandoned entirely (good call, by the way).
I have no doubt the video has truly worked wonders for the release as well. It has already reached nearly twelve million views on YouTube: extraordinarily impressive for an artist without a hit to her name as a lead performer domestically to date ("Bass Down Low" did do resounding well in parts of Western Europe).
