Amy Winehouse's 'Back to Black' Re-enters Top 10 on Billboard 200 Chart

In the wake of her death on July 23, Amy Winehouse's second album, "Back to Black" (2007), re-enters the Billboard 200 albums chart this week at No. 9 with 37,000 sold in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The week previous, it sold just 1,000.

The late British singer also returns to the list with her debut set, "Frank" (2004), at No. 57 with 8,000 (up 4,100%).

There were more Winehouse albums purchased in past week (ending July 24) -- 55,000 -- than during the first six months of the year. Through the week ending July 17, her catalog had shifted 44,000 copies.

More than 95% of her albums sold last week were downloads. The hefty digital share isn't shocking, as most consumers wouldn't have been able to find much physical stock of Winehouse's albums had they sought them out in brick-and-mortar stores.

As for the digital tracks, Winehouse sold a combined 111,000 downloads, up from just 5,000 the week previous. The biggest of the bunch was "Rehab," with 38,000 sold. It re-enters the Digital Songs chart at No. 46 and is the only Winehouse song on the tally this week.

It's expected that Winehouse's albums and songs will see even bigger sales next week, after a full week's worth of impact from her passing is felt on the charts.

I wonder if the label shipped physical stock in the wake of her passing, or will just let the digital version enjoy the sales.

A pleasant surprise, I wonder what caused HITS to underestimate so much with BTB. Will be interesting to see what it does next week, hopefully it will jump into the top five and 'Frank' into the top 40.

I would love either Kelly Rowland or Amy to hit #1 next week. As for some reason, I feel it could be either one's last chances for a #1 album (well, Amy's posthumous album could hit #1 later this year too).

According to various reports there are "three albums worth" of material recorded for the third Amy Winehouse album. It was ready to be released apparently but the family and management held it back because she was not in the state to release/promote an album properly. Needless to say, we should be seeing a posthumous album before Christmas.

Actually, I wonder what cause the final numbers to be so high since Billboard also estimated 20k~25k as of yesterday.

The Brandy/Ray J album currently is ranked No. 2,391 at amazon (with only 12 left in stock), so, yeah, I guess it won't shift a heckuva lot. It saw its UK release last month. Both acts appear on four tracks each of the 11-track album.

If it ever comes out, the upcoming Winehouse album will be like MJ's 'Michael' because there was material but it wasn't properly finished.

She will appear on Tony Bennett's Duets II, released in September.

her 3rd album likley wont go gold though, michael barley did that, and we know how popular he is. her lead single may barley break the hot 100. hold my hand just barley made top 40. her album would likley sell in the 150k-300 range.

As we've seen, individual catalog titles have not been swamping the upper regions of the chart since Billboard let catalog titles chart on the Billboard 200 (overall catalog album sales are enjoying a year-to-year bump, though). And, Winehouse's album is high as result of another extraordinary circumstance (i.e. Michael Jackson's albums).

I'm positive Amy will be #1 next week. The label shipped out more copies of both "Back to Black" and "Frank". When i went to Best Buy yesterday they had more copies of her albums than usual.

I think Kelly is going to be #1. Take it with a grain of salt, but I read that she's predicted to sell 150-170k according to Z100 on ATRL.

It would be very surprising if Rowland's album did that much, no? The album doesn't even appear on All Access' Street Pulse Daily Sales Reports- granted, you can't go by that for determining No. 1 or anything, but to not even appear in the top 50? Kinda odd. It does appear at No. 17 on StreetPulse's Independent Retail chart.

I think her posthumous album will have less controversy and stigma surrounding it, though, because it was on the verge of being released before her death anyway.

Adele's '21' Marks 11th Week At No. 1 On Billboard 200

As Adele's "21" heads back to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 for an 11th nonconsecutive week (up two slots with 77,000, according to Nielsen SoundScan; a gain of 1%), the late Amy Winehouse returns to the top 10 with "Back to Black" at No. 9 (37,000; up 3,140%).

Winehouse's first album, 2004's "Frank," also comes back to the tally, re-entering at No. 57 with 8,000 (up 4,100%). Additionally, her digital-only "Back to Black: B-Sides" EP, released in 2008, debuts at No. 152 with 3,000 after having sold next to nothing the previous week.

On the Digital Songs chart, "Rehab" -- the biggest hit from Winehouse's 2007 "Back" album -- re-enters at No. 46 with 38,000 downloads sold. It's the only Winehouse song on the tally this week.

Back to the top 10 albums for this week: The 11-week run of Adele's "21" at the top makes it the biggest No. 1 since Taylor Swift's "Fearless" also spent 11 frames in the penthouse in late 2007 and early 2008. Since the chart began using SoundScan data in May 1991, only eight albums have been No. 1 for 11 weeks or longer. If "21" hits a 12th week at No. 1, it will tie the runs racked up by Santana's "Supernatural" (1999) and Alanis Morissette's "Jagged Little Pill" (1995-1996).

At No. 2 this week, "Kidz Bop 20" debuts with 69,000, marking the third No. 2 album for the long-running children's music franchise. The Razor & Tie set also hit No. 2 with "Kidz Bop 9" in 2006 and "Kidz Bop 19" back in January. The latter arrived with a little more than 70,000 sold.

Fittingly, 3 Doors Down's latest album, "Time of My Life," debuts at No. 3 with 60,000. It's the fifth studio effort for the band, but the first to miss the No. 1 slot since its second release, "Away From the Sun," debuted and peaked at No. 8 in 2002. Its third and fourth sets, 2005's "Seventeen Days" and a 2008 self-titled album, both arrived at No. 1. The latter set entered with 154,000.

Last week's No. 1, Blake Shelton's "Red River Blue," drifts to No. 6 in its second week with 47,000 (down 60%). One step above him is DJ Khaled's "We the Best Forever," bowing with 53,000 -- his best sales week yet. "Forever" also marks his third top 10 and his highest-charting album, surpassing the No. 7 rank of "We Global" in 2008.

The final debut in the top 10 comes from veteran rock act 311, as its "Universal Pulse" races in at No. 7 with 46,000. It's the eighth top 10 album for the band. All of its studio efforts have reached the top 10 -- save for 1996's self-titled album, which climbed to No. 12.

As for the rest of the holdovers in the top 10, Jason Aldean's "My Kinda Party" falls 7-8 (43,000; up 2%) and Selena Gomez & the Scene's "When the Sun Goes Down" holds at No. 10 (28,000; down 12%).

Over on the Digital Songs chart, at No. 1, LMFAO's "Party Rock Anthem" keeps on partying with 209,000 downloads sold (down 3%) while Katy Perry's "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)" climbs up one rung to No. 2 with 164,000 (down 4%). Nicki Minaj's "Super Bass" is also up, rising a spot to No. 3 with 154,000 (down 1%).

Two titles make big jumps within the top 10 as Hot Chelle Rae's "Tonight Tonight" zips 7-4 with 148,000 (up 13%) and Bad Meets Evil's "Lighters" (featuring Bruno Mars) skips 12-5 with 143,000 (up 56%).

Reaching the top 10 for the first time is Britney Spears' "I Wanna Go," which goes 11-9 in its sixth week on the list, selling 116,000 (up 26%).

Meanwhile, Pitbull's "Give Me Everything" slips 6-7 (127,000; down 7%), Adele's "Rolling in the Deep" is steady at No. 8 (121,000; down 7%), and Lil Wayne's "How to Love" gets pushed down 5-6 despite a gain (139,000; up 2%).

Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending July 24) totaled 5.62 million units, up 1% compared with the sum last week (5.61 million) and up 6% compared with the comparable sales week of 2010 (5.3 million). Year-to-date album sales stand at 172 million, up 1% compared with the same total at this point last year (169.7 million). It's the ninth week in a row where year-to-date album volume is greater than the same time in the prior year.

Digital track sales this past week totaled 24.1 million downloads, up 5% compared with last week (22.9 million) and up 14% stacked next to the comparable week of 2010 (21 million). Year-to-date track sales are at 731 million, up 11% compared with the same total at this point last year (660.6 million).

Next week's Billboard 200 competes with the same week in 2010 when: Avenged Sevenfold's "Nightmare" entered at No. 1 with 163,000, pushing the previous week's topper, Eminem's "Recovery," down to No. 2 (159,000; down 15%).
