This group is unstoppable in Japan... their popularity in Japan would even rival that of *N'SYNC's popularity here in 2000. Japanese idol group AKB48's new single "Flying Get" has sold a total of 1,025,952 on it's first day alone beating out the first day sales of their previous single "Everyday, Katyusha" which sold 942,475 copies on its first day. www.oricon.co.jp/rank/js/d/2011-08-23/1st day: 1. AKB48 - 1,025,952 2. V6 - 28,943 3. Passpo - 14,412 This group has a crazy stanbase in Japan. :o :o

It is impressive how much money people are willing to spend to support a fantasy.
Or is it?

I heard that katyusha song. I thought it was a joke. It's so horrible, anything rebecca black makes looks like a piece of art. Their taste is really weird. And all those groups that have like 50 members...

Just to put things into perspective, physical singles in Japan are more expense than CDs here. They can cost up to $20.

The song is horrific. How the hell does something that crap sell a million units in a day?

The song is horrific. How the hell does something that crap sell a million units in a day? A couple of songs by Flo Rida and Ke$ha sold over 600,000 downloads in one week here a few years back. This sort of thing can happen anywhere.

Aren't there like 25 girls in this group? As of July 24, 2011, there are 60 members. :o Getting them all scheduled to appear in one place, hair, makeup, etc. must be a ton of work to get done.

Is this some sort of joke by the Japanese against the worldwide music industry? One day will they tell us all they were just pulling our legs and they were never serious about this group? I hope so because if not I weep for humanity.

I hope so because if not I weep for humanity. I think almost every country has some artist or group that is regarded as such. This might be the hot thing there right now. I did see some articles about some other J-Pop artist or group that sold a lot of copies in a single week and they mentioned how in some cases, individual people bought hundreds of copies. And many of the times, it was middle-aged, creepy looking men.

At first I thought this act was from Japanese Idol, the way it was written- but I don't think that's the case?
Look at the teen pop of the late 90s/early 2000s- a lot of it was monotonous (thanks to Max Martin), not very celebrated outside the mega fanbases, other than a couple of singles maybe, and not regarded as great works. Yet look how those albums sold.
The Japanese apparently love some throwaway pop.

A Japanese idol is usually a pretty face with a bunch of magazine covers, commercials, product tie-ins, and movies basically. So basically this group multiplied by all the members, and they're pretty much everywhere.

The group has 48 girls which are divided into teams A, K, and B. Each team has 16 members. There is also about another 16 girls who are in team research students. The teams perform at their home theatre in Akihabara in rotation.
Every year an election is held by the fans to choose who can sing for their new singles. The top-ranked members gets to sing the new song , and the higher ranked members gets to sing more. Sorry for my bad English, but I hope you understand.
Ok I understand now. I was watching their video for, "Baby, Baby, Baby" and was like there is no way there's 60 girls in this video! haha

I find this insanely creepy and slightly terrifying. It's like the pop equivalent of Nineteen Eighty-Four.
