Fantastic gain for SLY. Can ballads be this big, or is Ms. Adkins just the exception? Ms Adkins really is just the exception to the rule - whether she blazes a trail for future performers of her ilk I really couldn't predict. To get a song like SLY to the top of the Hot100 is really quite crazy. There were many people earlier in the year predicting there was no way RITD would ever get great success on the Hot100 - not particularly that they didn't like the song but they thought it just wasn't the song that US radio would play in any numbers. We all know now that radio was forced to get on board due to the sales/popularity of the song - which is the reverse of what normally happens.

This may or may not be a turning point for tempo and variety on CHR. I recall that the introduction of Whitney Houston to Top 40 started the Big Ballad trend that went on for more than a decade.

I wonder if Adele may pave the way for Florence + The Machine to get more than just some scattered airplay. Similar situation of a more acoustic-based (but not AC/light rock), big-voiced artist.

Florence may be just the sort of artist who could benefit by the blaze trailed by Adele, yes.

www.billboard.com/news#/news/kelly-clarkson-s-know-it-all-debuts-on-hot-1005353052.storyKelly Clarkson's 'Know It All' Debuts on Hot 100, Rihanna's 'Cheers' Risesby Gary Trust, N.Y. | September 14, 2011 As Maroon 5's "Moves Like Jagger," featuring Christina Aguilera, rebounds to the top of the Billboard Hot 100, Kelly Clarkson's "Mr. Know It All" launches on the chart as the list's highest debut at No. 18. Rihanna, meanwhile, banks another Hot 100 top 10, "Cheers (Drink to That)," from her album "Loud." Clarkson previews her fifth studio album, "Stronger," due Oct. 25, by notching the second-highest debut among her 17 Hot 100 chart entries. She began at a higher rank only with "Never Again," which arrived (and peaked) at No. 8 the week of May 12, 2007. "Know" enters Digital Songs at No. 9 with 107,000 downloads sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The track is likewise the top new entry on Radio Songs, where it starts at No. 65 with 17 million in all-format audience (up 79%), according to Nielsen BDS. The song rises 30-20 as the Greatest Gainer on the Adult Pop Songs radio airplay chart and launches at No. 29 on Pop Songs. Clarkson premiered "Know" Aug. 31 via webcast on her official website ahead of its Sept. 5 release to retail. As the original "American Idol" queen charges onto the Hot 100, the chart's top song is again by two of the coaches - Adam Levine and Aguilera - of rival music reality competition program "The Voice." After dropping to No. 2 last week, "Jagger" returns for a second frame atop the Hot 100, similarly rebounding (3-1) for a second week at No. 1 on Digital Songs (220,000, up 6%). The song claims Airplay Gainer honors on the Hot 100 courtesy of its 8-5 push on Radio Songs (104 million, up 20%). Last week's Hot 100 No. 1, Adele's "Someone Like You," retreats 1-2 after soaring to the summit from No. 19 a week ago, a coronation fueled by reaction to her performance of the song on the MTV Video Music Awards Aug. 28. The piano-and-vocal-only ballad - the first such No. 1 in the Hot 100's 53-year history - slides 1-2 on Digital Songs (213,000, down 22%). "Someone" climbs 19-13, however, on Radio Songs (61 million, up 33%). The song is the Greatest Gainer on Pop Songs (19-16) and Adult Contemporary (16-14), while pushing 5-4 on Triple A, 10-6 on Adult Pop Songs and 35-28 on Rock Songs. Foster the People's "Pumped Up Kicks" holds at No. 3 on the Hot 100 for a third week. The track drops 2-3 on Digital Songs (193,000, down 11%), while bulleting at No. 10 on Radio Songs (79 million, up 13%). LMFAO's former No. 1 "Party Rock Anthem," featuring Lauren Bennett and GoonRock (4-4) and Bad Meets Evil's "Lighters," featuring Bruno Mars (7-5), close out the Hot 100's top five. As Maroon 5 revisits the Hot 100's apex, the group's lead singer Levine returns to the top 10 (12-6, after rising to No. 10 two weeks ago) as a guest on Gym Class Heroes' "Stereo Hearts." The song advances 9-5 on Digital Songs (145,000, up 4%) and 18-16 on Radio Songs (56 million, up 15%). Nicki Minaj's "Super Bass" descends 5-7 on the Hot 100 and Lady Gaga's "You and I" falls 6-8. The latter title had, like Adele's "Someone," benefited last week from a buzzworthy performance on the VMAs. "You and I" drops 4-6 on Digital Songs (141,000, down 19%), while edging 23-21 on Radio Songs (48 million, up 18%). Lil Wayne's former No. 5-peaking "How to Love" rebounds 14-9 with Digital Gainer accolades, surging 20-10 on Digital Songs (90,000, up 33%). Parent album "Tha Carter IV" spends a second week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. Rihanna rounds out the Hot 100's top tier by scoring a fourth top 10 from her fifth studio album "Loud," as "Cheers (Drink to That)" ascends 11-10. The song reaches the top bracket by gaining 10% in airplay to 58 million, despite its 11% digital sales decline to 126,000. Rihanna's 19th Hot 100 top 10 follows three leaders from "Loud": "Only Girl (In the World)"; "What's My Name?," featuring Drake; and, "S&M." Two other cuts from the set have also graced the chart: "California King Bed" (No. 37 peak) and "Man Down" (No. 59). Below Clarkson's arrival, six other new titles debut on the Hot 100, including one from a fellow "American Idol" champion, plus yet another Fox TV star. Lady Antebellum charts a fourth Hot 100 title from its third studio album, "Own the Night" - expected to charge onto next week's Billboard 200 - as "Wanted You More" starts at No. 34 (74,000 downloads). Predecessor preview track "Dancin' Away With My Heart" debuted last week at No. 50 (57,000). The set's first proper radio single, "Just a Kiss," peaked at No. 7 on the Hot 100 (this week ranking at No. 30), while current country focus track "We Owned the Night" climbs 96-80. Hugh Laurie, aka, Dr. Gregory House of Fox's "House, M.D.," earns his first Hot 100 hit, as "Police Dog Blues" enters at No. 58 (46,000 downloads). Parent album "Let Them Talk" bows on the Billboard 200 at No. 16 and Blues Albums at No. 1 with 20,000 copies sold. In more Fox news, Scotty McCreery debuts on the Hot 100 at No. 84 with his second single, "The Trouble With Girls". The track by the reigning "Idol" king enters Digital Songs at No. 59 (27,000, up 12%) and rises 54-47 in its second week on Country Songs. McCreery's "Idol" victory song "I Love You This Big" reached No. 11 on the Hot 100 (and No. 15 on Country Songs).

^That question as asked last week, when people thought LFN wouldn't hang in the top 10. Not sure if there was a definitive answer. As LFN was already spent 12 weeks in the top 10, (including two weeks at No. 1) it's not as significant as it would be for a track being No. 1 in airplay and never cracking the top 10. "Dance Like There's No Tomorrow" appeared on Randy Jackson's album; "I'm Just Here For the Music" did not appear on an album, to my knowledge. Both were released as digital singles, though, which was the catalyst in their charting on the Hot 100.

Week Ending Sept. 11, 2011. Songs: The Voices Posted 8 minutes ago by Paul Grein in Chart Watch new.music.yahoo.com/blogs/chart_watch/74412/week-ending-sept-11-2011-songs-the-voices/"Moves Like Jagger" by Maroon 5 featuring Christina Aguilera returns to #1 after being bumped down to #2 last week by Adele's "Someone Like You." I'm sure that Maroon5 front-man Adam Levine and Aguilera figured that their stint as judges on The Voice would boost their visibility, but I doubt they ever dreamed it would trigger a major #1 hit for them. "Moves Like Jagger" has sold 1,753,000 digital copies, which already makes it Maroon5's third biggest digital hit. 2007's "Makes Me Wonder" has sold 2,621,000 copies. 2004's "She Will Be Loved" has sold 2,178,000. "Jagger" has sold more copies than any of Aguilera's previous hits, though her biggest hits pre-date the digital boom. "Jagger" has sold far more than the winners' song by Javier Colon, the Season 1 winner of The Voice. Colon's "Stitch By Stitch" has sold 192K. (Colon's fortunes may improve when OK...Here's The Truth, his first album for Universal Republic Records, is released.) Deep trivia: Maroon5's only previous #1, "Makes Me Wonder," also returned to the top spot after being knocked out, which is a fairly rare occurrence. Its run in the top spot was interrupted by T-Pain's "Buy U A Drank (Shawty Snappin')," which featured Yung Joc. Adele's "Someone Like You" dips from #1 to #2. Billboard's Keith Caulfield notes that when the song sprinted from #19 to #1 last week, it marked the biggest leap into the top spot that wasn't simply spurred by the arrival of a single in the marketplace. The song had been available at digital retailers since Feb. 22. It rose to #1 on the strength of Adele's performance at the VMAs on Aug. 28. (This echoes what happened in the U.K., where the song surged from #47 to #1 the week after Adele performed it on the BRIT Awards, which is the U.K. equivalent of the Grammys.) Billboard's Gary Trust notes that "Someone Like You" is the first song featuring only piano and vocal, and nothing else, to reach #1 in the 53-year history of the Hot 100. The spare recording features only Adele's vocal and Dan Wilson on piano. (They also co-wrote and co-produced the hit.) Moreover, it's the first ballad to reach #1 since Rihanna's "Take A Bow" in May 2008. In the intervening three years, several mid-tempo songs have hit #1, including "Rolling In The Deep," Owl City's "Fireflies," and multiple songs that feature the sweet croon of Bruno Mars, notably his own "Just The Way You Are" and B.o.B's "Nothin' On You." I guess in today's turbo-charged pop environment, these mid-tempo songs have taken the place of traditional ballads. In the year before "Take A Bow" hit #1, four ballads reached #1: Plain White T's' tender "Hey There Delilah," Fergie's sensuous "Big Girls Don't Cry," Alicia Keys' soulful "No One" and Leona Lewis' elegant "Bleeding Love." Why is the industry so focused on up-tempo songs? Trust gives the example of Katy Perry, who has reached the top 10 on the Hot 100 with eight of her nine singles as a lead artist. The one that fell short was "Thinking Of You," the only ballad in the bunch. It peaked at #29. "Someone Like You," which logged five weeks at #1 in the U.K. earlier this year, is the first song by a female solo artist to top the chart in both the U.S. and the U.K. since Ke$ha's "We R Who We R" in 2010-2011. It's the first song by British female solo artist to top the chart in both countries since Leona Lewis' "Bleeding Love" in 2007-2008. (In case you're wondering, Adele's previous hit, "Rolling In The Deep," peaked at #2 in the U.K earlier this year.) "Someone Like You" tops the 1 million mark in digital sales this week. It's just 16K behind the sales to date of Adele's 2008 hit "Chasing Pavements." "Rolling In The Deep" this week becomes the first song to sell 5 million digital copies in a calendar year. (It topped the 5 million mark in total sales last week, but that counts 108K copies it sold in late 2010.) LMFAO's "Party Rock Anthem" (featuring Lauren Bennett and GoonRock) holds at #4 on the Hot 100. This week it jumps to #3 on the year-to-date chart. Only "Rolling In The Deep" and Katy Perry's "E.T." (featuring Kanye West) have sold more copies in 2011. Rihanna's "Cheers (Drink To That)" jumps from #11 to #10 in its seventh week. It's Rihanna's 19th top 10 hit in a little more than six years. She has now amassed as many top 10 hits as Prince, in all of his many incarnations, and Ricky Nelson, who was one of rock and roll's first teen idols. Pop Quiz: Who was younger at the time of their first top 10 hit: Rihanna or Ricky Nelson? Answer Below. As of this week, Katy Perry has three of the top 20 digital songs so far in 2011, more than any other artist. "E.T." is #2 for the year. "Firework" is #12. "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)" is #19. Pitbull and Bruno Mars each have two songs in the top 20 for the year-to-date. Since "Last Friday Night" is still selling briskly, Perry has a very good chance of winding up with three songs in the year-end top 20. Only two other artists have achieved this feat since Nielsen SoundScan added a year-end digital songs chart in 2008. Rihanna had four of the top 20 hits of 2008 (counting T.I.'s "Live Your Life," on which she was featured). Bruno Mars had three of the top 20 hits of 2010 (counting B.o.B.'s "Nothin' On You" and Travie McCoy's "Billionaire," on which he was featured). I have more good news for Perry. "California Gurls" (featuring Snoop Dogg) tops the 5 million mark in digital sales, two weeks after "Hot N Cold" reached that plateau. Only two other artists have had two 5-million sellers: the Black Eyed Peas and Lady Gaga. This brings the total of 5-million-sellers to 18. Quiz Answer: Ricky Nelson was younger than Rihanna by about five months when he first cracked the top 10. Nelson was just five days past his 17th birthday in May 1957 when he first cracked the top 10 in with a cover of Fats Domino's "I'm Walkin'," which was double-listed with "A Teenager's Romance." Rihanna was 17 and five months in July 2005 when she first cracked the top 10 with "Pon De Replay." Here's the low-down on this week's top 10 songs. 1. Maroon 5 featuring Christina Aguilera, "Moves Like Jagger." The song returns to #1 in its 12th week on the chart. This is its seventh week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #1 (220K). 2. Adele, "Someone Like You." The former #1 song dips to #2 in its 10th week on the chart. This is its second week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #2 (213K). 3. Foster The People, "Pumped Up Kicks." The song holds at #3 for the third week in its 20th week on the chart. This is its fifth week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #3 (193K). 4. LMFAO featuring Lauren Bennett & GoonRock, "Party Rock Anthem." The former #1 song holds at #4 in its 25th week on the chart. This is its 17th week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #4 (155K). 5. Bad Meets Evil featuring Bruno Mars, "Lighters." The song rebounds from #7 to #5 in its 13th week on the chart. This is its seventh week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #12 (88K). 6. Gym Class Heroes featuring Adam Levine, "Stereo Hearts." The song jumps from #12 to #6 (its highest ranking to date) in its 13th week. This is its second week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #5 (145K). 7. Nicki Minaj, "Super Bass." The song drops from #5 to #7 in its 20th week on the chart. This is its 14th week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #11 (89K). 8. Lady Gaga, "You And I." The song drops from #6 to #8 in its sixth week on the chart. This is its second week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #6 (141K). 9. Lil Wayne, "How To Love." The song rebounds from #14 to #9 in its 16th week. This is its 11th week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #10 (90K). 10. Rihanna, "Cheers (Drink To That)." The song jumps from #11 to #10 in its seventh week. It's Rihanna's 19th top 10 hit; her 11th as a strictly solo artist (without billed collaborators). Digital sales rank: #8 (126K). "You Make Me Feel..." by Cobra Starship featuring Sabi, which shot from #18 to #8 last week, makes an unexpected drop to #11. Digital sales rank: #7 (127K). Two former #1 hits also drop out of the top 10 this week. "Give Me Everything" by Pitbull featuring Ne-Yo, Afrojack & Nayer drops from #9 to #13. Katy Perry's "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)" drops from #10 to #12. Kelly Clarkson's "Mr. Know It All" bows at #18. This is Clarkson's second highest debut, topped only by "Never Again," which debuted and peaked at #8 in April 2007. The song is vying to become Clarkson's ninth top 10 hit. It's from her upcoming fifth studio album, Stronger, which is due Oct. 24. Dev's "In The Dark" jumps from #28 to #20 in its sixth week. The Cataracs, which were featured along with Dev on Far*East Movement's #1 smash "Like A G6," produced the hit. The Cataracs also produced "Better With The Lights Off" by New Boyz featuring Chris Brown, which jumps from #67 to #55 in its 11th week. "Without You" by David Guetta featuring Usher sprints from #39 to #23 in its second week. Guetta's other current song, "Turn Me On" (featuring Nicki Minaj), drops from #37 to #68 in its second week. Lady Antebellum's "Wanted You More" bows at #34. This is the fourth top 50 hit from the group's third studio album, Own The Night. The album will enter The Billboard 200 at #1 next week, with first-week sales in the 275K range. Jason Derulo's "It Girl" jumps from #61 to #38 (its highest ranking to date) in its fifth week. Derulo was passed over for a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist earlier this year, but he got the last word. A line from the new song says: "I finally found the girl of my dreams/Much more than a Grammy Award/That's how much you mean to me. The Script's "Nothing" jumps from #53 to #39 in its fifth week...LMFAO's "Sexy And I Know It" jumps from #76 to #50 in its second week. Hugh Laurie's "Police Dog Blues" bows at #58. The song is from Laurie's album Let Them Talk, which enters The Billboard 200 at #16 this week. Laurie has starred in House since November 2004. He's up for an Emmy on Sunday night for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Dramatic Series. Beyonce's "Love On Top" drops from #20 to #70 in its second week. Unless it turns around, this will become Beyonce's third straight single to miss the top 10. Maybe that baby is coming along at just the right time. Beyonce has earned a nice, long break, followed (I hope) by a convincing comeback. Scotty McCreery's "Trouble With Girls" bows at #84. (I would think after winning American Idol, McCreery would have no "Trouble With Girls.") McCreery's "I Love You This Big" peaked at #11 and has sold steadily. After 16 weeks, it is up to 582K. JoJo's "Disaster" bows at #87. JoJo has been charting since 2004, when she was just 13. She'll turn 21 on Dec. 20. JoJo cracked the top 10 in 2006 with "Too Little Too Late." The new song is from her upcoming album Jumping Trains. The Band Perry's "If I Die Young" this week becomes the fifth country song to top the 3 million mark in digital sales. It's the only one of the five that didn't crack the top 10 on the Hot 100. It peaked at #14. The other country songs to top the 3 million mark are Lady Antebellum's "Need You Now" (which peaked at #2), Taylor Swift's "Love Story" (which reached #4) and "You Belong With Me" (which hit #2) and Carrie Underwood's "Before He Cheats" (which made #8). "Telephone" by Lady Gaga featuring Beyonce tops the 3 million mark. It's Gaga's sixth song to sell 3 million or more copies. Only one other artist, Katy Perry, has had six 3-million-sellers as a lead artist. "Where Them Girls At" by David Guetta featuring Flo Rida tops the 1 million mark in digital sales.

When was the last time artist had #1 song on airplay but was not in top 10 BH100? The only songs I can think of in recent years were #1 in airplay in weeks when they weren't in the top-10 are Shakira's "Hips Don't Lie", Chingy's "Pullin' Me Back" and Lloyd's "You". I'm sure there were a lot of others though.

How does LFN's airplay peak (audience) ranks among her own discography, especially during TD era?

Omg the shade at beyonce and her comeback in that article is surprising...I think each single will peak higher and higher and then the last one or tow will be lower. I think this love on top will make it top 10/15 countdown and end of time will make it top 5/10 ...also, I didn't even realize that take a bow was considered a ballad. Learn something new everyday.

Because of its strong rhythmic and urban airplay, "Best Thing I Never Had' bullets at No. 28* on Hot 100 Airplay. (though it drops 31-37 on the Hot 100). Odd that it fell relatively quickly at pop, but has sustained itself at those two formats.

Well that's not a fair assessment, the song in question was awful! Hell I loved Katy back then but that song was atrociously bad! It was her pitchy whining for about three minutes, no wonder it flopped. It had nothing to do with it being a ballad.

As "ET" falls off, this has gotta be the first time in a long time that there's only one Katy song on the Hot 100.

^^ It's been over a year since Teenage Dream debuted so yes! But she may be back with two songs in the top 100 soon since they have confirmed a 6th single.
