So at this point, what song will replace MLJ from #1 Hot 100, beside SLY? Rihanna's new song maybe. If her label is smart, she can have her first #1 debut on Hot 100

If her label is smart, she can have her first #1 debut on Hot 100 If her label was smart, they'd push "Cheers" more before moving on. Seriously, they waited like 2 months before releasing a new lead single. ??? WTF is that?

Rihanna and her label never wanted Cheers. They've been trying to kill it for a while now. And now they're just pretending it doesn't exist.

^How so? The track did go for official radio play, did it not? And it does have a video, does it not? :)

I like MLJ but it can get pretty annoying if you listen to it more than twice a day. I'm hoping it burns out at radio sooner than expected. Seems unlikely, but I can dream. Adele looks better at #1. No immediate threats to those 2 tracks for Top 2.
LMFAO might actually have another hit on their hands with Sexy & I Know It.
I wish Papi would smash. I love that song *&* video!
Lady Gaga's last shot at a Top 10 hit is Marry The Night and then this era is over. Nothing else on that album will be a Top 10 hit or possibly even Top 20. But things could be worse: she could be having Beyonce's era.

i find it absolutely ridiculous and, at the same time, exciting that Rihanna is releasing new music. It could totally backfire, or it could be a breath of fresh air. I don't remember in my personal life an artist releasing music so fast WHILE I WAS WATCHING. I'm sure it happened in my life, but i wasn't watching so closely. This is a record for me for sure. 2nd place would be Gwen 2nd solo album, but i don't think it was as close as this is.

Crash was released in January 2006 Wind It Up hit the airwaves in September-October that year so she was absent basically 6 months.

Releases between albums are definitely speeding up. A lot has to do with our shorter attention spans now (MJ went almost 5 years between "Thriller" & "Bad"; Usher went 4 between "Confessions" and "Here I Stand") I think the precedent started on the R&B charts with the avalanche of rappers being featured on other hits (see Ja Rule, Akon, T-Pain, Chris Brown). This gives the appearance of being fairly ubiquitous even when you are between projects, and over time may have changed our sensibilities a little. The only problem I see in the CHR world is burnout.

The speed of Rihanna's releases makes me think of the sixties (not that was I alive then, but you know...)
Aretha Franklin released 12 albums between 1964 and 1972.. The Beatles released over a dozen albums from 1963-1970, and The Supremes released 13 between 1964-1968.
You could almost say that Rihanna's release speed makes her a a super throwback artist.

I don't think it is related to however people are today. Many people have released albums in fast schedule across history.
Unless there's some scientific study making comparisons that reaches some conclusion, I think it is simply a case by case scenario based on two factors: the commercial reception and the creative process.

Well Mariah Carey in the 90's was releasing albums after albums. 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1997, 1998, 1999. So was Garth Brooks.

It's interesting that Rihanna will have as many studio releases (six) in six years as Whitney Houston in 26 (!) years. Whitney, of course, had a couple of ST between releases, but RiRi has almost as many off-release collaborations. I'm glad RiRi (and others) are taking the MC path rather than the WH route.

It's just because Rihanna had tons of collaborations during one of her eras or between the gap of her 2 eras, that makes her look "too often" releasing new music. Unlike Mariah who had limited collaborations in 90s during her peaks.

I think perhaps Arabella was being sarcastic? How I read it, with the rolling eyes and all.
"Someone Like You" looks like it easily will be the biggest airplay gainer for this Hot 100 chart.

I noticed how artists released more albums in the 50s and 60s too. You can see how Sinatra or Streisand released 3 albums each year. I still don't know what changed it though.

The '60s would have been a great time to be a fan of one of those artists, it seems. Though, what was the average album length back then? 8-10 songs?

Prince also used to release an album every year. There's never been a hard and fast rule, but the common conception seems to be that the longer you go, the less relevant you become (unless you're a legend of course)

From 1978-1996 .only in 1983 he didn't release an album when 1999 was charting for 2 years before Purple Rain was released. You go Rihanna

Unsurprisingly, "Papi" not getting much play in advance of its official radio date next week. It's at No. 102 on iTunes, spurred by the video premiere. It doesn't have much to do, though, to top its initial peak when it charted as an album preview single (No. 99).
Is there a radio date for Nicole Scherzinger's latest single? Am sure she'll perform on X-Factor at some point- though I don't think she's the kind of act who would be a contender for No. 1 following an X-Factor performance, especially if airplay isn't too high.
It's starting for Ms. Perry's sixth single. :)
