Rock band Evanescence returns to the Billboard 200 chart, scoring its second No. 1 album, as its self-titled third set bows with 127,000 copies sold according to Nielsen SoundScan. The act, led by singer Amy Lee, last released an album in 2006, when "The Open Door" debuted at No. 1 with 447,000. The new set's first single, "What You Want," rises 15-13 on the Rock Songs airplay chart this week, while also holding a bullet at No. 17 on the Alternative Songs tally. The group's first album, 2003's "Fallen," spawned the Billboard Hot 100 hits "Bring Me To Life" (No. 5) and "My Immortal" (No. 7). Last week's No. 1 album, "Clear As Day" from 2011 "American Idol" winner Scotty McCreery, falls to No. 4 with 88,000 (down 55%). Adele's "21" holds at No. 2 with 111,000 (down 1%). Rock band Five Finger Death Punch scores its best week ever as its new "American Capitalist" album starts at No. 3 with 91,000. It's new chart high for the act and biggest sales week. Its last release, 2009's "War Is the Answer," jumped in at No. 7 with a 44,000 launch. A second 2011 "Idol" alum joins McCreery in the top five, as the woman he beat, runner-up Lauren Alaina, debuts at No. 5 with "Wildflower." The set shifts 69,000 in its opening frame. This is the first time since 2008 where both the winner and second-place finisher of "Idol" posted top five-charting albums (or top 10, for that matter). The last Nos. 1 and 2 placers to do so were '08 victor David Cook and runner-up David Archuleta. Their debut albums respectively bowed and peaked at Nos. 3 and 2, respectively. Ryan Adams' "Ashes & Fire" arrives at No. 7, selling 49,000 in its first week. It's the singer's second top 10 set, and first since "Easy Tiger" also debuted and peaked at No. 7 in 2007 off a 61,000 start. His last charting album, "III/IV," with the Cardinals, peaked at No. 59 on Feb. 5 of his year. Lady Antebellum's "Own the Night" slips 4-8 with 47,000 (down 18%) while fellow country act Martina McBride arrives with "Eleven" at No. 10 with 40,000. The latter is the singer's sixth top 10 album and her first for the Republic Nashville label, after having spent her entire career on RCA. Her last studio release, "Shine," started at No. 10 with 41,000 in 2009. As for the rest of the top 10, Tony Bennett's "Duets II" shifts 3-6 with 54,000 (down 23%) and Lil Wayne's "Tha Carter IV" moves 6-9 with 45,000 (down 15%). Over to the Digital Songs chart, Adele's "Someone Like You" is steady at No. 1 yet again, with 207,000 downloads sold this past week (down 5%). LMFAO's "Sexy and I Know It" rises 3-2 (206,000; up 13%) and Rihanna's "We Found Love" (featuring Calvin Harris) jumps 5-3 (174,000; up 21%). Foster the People's "Pumped Up Kicks" holds at No. 4 (174,000; down 1%) and Maroon 5's "Moves Like Jagger" slides 2-5 (166,000; down 11%). The highest debut on the Digital Songs chart belongs to Snoop Dogg & Wiz Khalifa's "Young, Wild & Free" (featuring Bruno Mars), which debuts at No. 6 with 159,000. It's the first single from the soundtrack to "Mac & Devin Go to High School," due out in December. Gym Class Heroes' "Stereo Hearts" (featuring Adam Levine), is pushed back 6-7 despite a sales gain (136,000; up 2%), as is David Guetta's "Without You" (featuring Usher), which moves 7-8 (129,000; up 7%). Cobra Starship's "You Make Me Feel" (featuring Sabi) returns to the top 10, rising 11-9 (107,000; up 26%) and Lady Gaga's "You and I" holds at No. 10 (96,000; up 6%). Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending Oct. 16) totaled 5.21 million units, up 1% compared to the sum last week (5.13 million) and up 4% compared to the comparable sales week of 2010 (5.01 million). Year to date album sales stand at 238.84 million, up 3% compared to the same total at this point last year (230.97 million). It is the 21st week in a row where year-to-date album volume is greater than the same time in the prior year. Digital track sales this past week totaled 21.34 million downloads, up 4% compared to last week (20.59 million) and up 8% stacked next to the comparable week of 2010 (19.71 million). Year to date track sales are at 993.66 million, up 10% compared to the same total at this point last year (899.68 million). Next week's Billboard 200 competes with the same week in 2010 when: Sugarland's "The Incredible Machine" debuted at No. 1 with 203,000 and Kings of Leon's "Come Around Sundown" started at No. 2 with 184,000. The top four also saw debuts from Elton John and Leon Russell's "The Union" (No. 3 with 80,000) and Rod Stewart's "Fly Me to the Moon" (No. 4 with 79,000). The previous week's No. 1, Lil Wayne's "I Am Not a Human Being," dropped to No. 5 with 65,000 (down 49%). www.billboard.com/#/news/evanescence-nets-second-no-1-album-on-billboard-1005421232.story

It looks like we might suffer a small negative year-to-year % next week... I know Adele is likely to do 100k again but is there anything else likely to compete with the two big openings of this time last year?

^Overall sales, though, may help compensate for that. In any event, year-to-date album volume will continue to pace ahead of 2010. :) new.music.yahoo.com/blogs/chart_watch/74424/week-ending-oct-16-2011-albums-after-teen-stardom/;_ylt=AjgmRi.n1sQ37gyuDA_.X5APwiUvWeek Ending Oct. 16, 2011. Albums: After Teen Stardom Posted by Paul Grein in Chart WatchJoe Jonas' solo debut album, Fastlife, enters The Billboard 200 at #15, with sales of just 18K copies. That's a far cry from Jonas Brothers' fastest-selling album, A Little Bit Longer, which blew through 525,000 copies in its first week in June 2008. Simple math tells us that for every 29 fans who bought that album, just one die-hard loyalist sprung for this album. The tally for Fastlife is about one-quarter of that rung up by Nick Jonas & the Administration's Who I Am, which debuted at #3 in February 2010 with sales of 82K. (The third member of the trio, Kevin Jonas, has yet to release his first post-JoBros album.) Nobody ever said graduating from teen idol stardom to mainstream pop success was easy. JoBros reached their peak in 2007 and 2008 with the hits "S.O.S.," "When You Look Me In The Eyes" and "Burnin' Up." In June 2008, the group was featured alongside Demi Lovato in the Disney Channel TV movie Camp Rock. Eight months later, the group starred in a theatrical release, Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience. In June 2009, the group released Lines, Vines And Trying Times. It sold fewer than half as many copies in its first week (247,000) as A Little Bit Longer had just 10 months earlier. That's how fast teen-idol stardom can start to fade. The very next month, the inevitable happened. Someone came along who was even younger and cuter. Justin Bieber was 15 when he launched a string of hits with "One Time." Justin Timberlake, who was 17 when *NSYNC first hit the chart in April 1998, is a rare example of a boy band alumni who went on to a successful solo career. Timberlake's first solo album, Justified, debuted at #2 in November 2002, with first-week sales of 439,000. In a feature on Jonas in last week's Billboard, Julianne Escobedo Shepherd observed, "Transforming a charmed teenhood career into a viable adult one is possibly one of the entertainment industry's most difficult feats. For every Justin Timberlake, there are 10 former boy-band members whose post-group disinterest led them to hang up their hats." Case in point: JC Chasez, who was also in *NSYNC. Chasez's first solo album, Schizophrenic, debuted and peaked at #17 in March 2004, with first-week sales of 52K. Two members of New Kids on the Block also experienced modest sales with their solo debut albums, which were released a decade after the group's heyday. Joey McIntyre's Stay The Same debuted and peaked at #49 in March 1999, with first-week sales of 31K. An eponymous album by Jordan Knight debuted and peaked at #29 that June, with first-week sales of 42K. Even Michael Jackson faced some bumps in the road making the transition from teen idol to mainstream pop star. His first two solo albums, Got To Be There and Ben, were big hits in 1972 (the year he turned 14), but his next two studio albums didn't go far. Music & Me, released in 1973, peaked at #92. Forever, Michael, released in 1975 when he was a no-longer-cute 16, stalled at #101. (Things fell into place for him in 1979 with Off The Wall, which was released just before his 21st birthday.) It's tough going for yesterday's teen idols, as their young fans move on to other acts and other interests. But opportunities come around again-eventually. The NKOTBSB tour, featuring New Kids on the Block and Backstreet Boys, has been a big hit. (Their NKOTBSB album has sold 113K copies since its release in May.) It's possible that a JoBros reunion tour will also be a hit down the line. Evanescence's first album in five years, Evanescence, debuts at #1, just as its last album, The Open Door, did in 2006. But the sales tally is way down. This album started with 127K. The Open Door opened with 447K. Adele's 21 holds at #2. It has sold more copies so far this year than the year's next two best-selling albums combined (the runners-up are Lady Gaga's Born This Way and Lil Wayne's Tha Carter IV). If this stat holds up through the rest of the year (and I think it will), 21 will become only the second album in Nielsen SoundScan history to sell more copies than the year's next two best-sellers combined. In 2004, Usher's Confessions sold more than the combined total of runners-up Norah Jones' Feels Like Home and Eminem's Encore. Evanescence and Adele both won Grammys as Best New Artist. This marks the first time that the top two albums were by past Best New Artist winners since September 2010, when Zac Brown Band's You Get What You Give and Maroon 5's Hands All Over debuted in the top two spots. Five Finger Death Punch's American Capitalist debuts at #3. It's the hard rock band's third album; its second top 10 album in a row and its highest-charting album to date. American Idol Season 10 winner Scotty McCreery and runner-up Lauren Alaina are both listed in the top five this week. McCreery's Clear As Day drops from #1 to #4. Alaina's Wildflower debuts at #5. This marks the first time that both of the top two Idol contestants in a given season have appeared in the top five simultaneously since December 2005, when Season 4 winner Carrie Underwood's Some Hearts was #2 and runner-up Bo Bice's Real Thing was #4. The Fine Print: Season 5 winner Taylor Hicks and runner-up Katharine McPhee both made the top five, but they didn't appear in the top five simultaneously. The same was true of Season 7 winner David Cook and runner-up David Archuleta. Martina McBride's 11th studio album, Eleven, debuts at #10. It's her sixth top 10 album. Only two other core country female artists, Reba McEntire and LeAnn Rimes, have had as many or more top 10 albums. They have each had eight. One crossover star, Linda Ronstadt, has had 10 top 10 albums, but her sound and appeal went far beyond country. "We Found Love" by Rihanna featuring Calvin Harris holds at #1 for the second week in the U.K. How close will it come to hitting #1 in the U.S. (Here's a hint: It jumps to #3 on Hot Digital Songs.) You'll find out when we post Chart Watch: Songs later today. Shameless Plug: Adele is a cinch to win Grammys for Album and Record of the Year, but what will her competition be? We won't know for sure until the nominations are announced on Nov. 30, but I'll make some educated guesses in a blog that will go up later this week. I'll also preview the Best New Artist category, where Nicki Minaj is the front-runner. This will kick off a series of blogs in which I preview the Grammy nominations in the pop, rock, R&B, rap and country fields. Here's the low-down on this week's top 10 albums. 1. Evanescence, Evanescence, 127,000. This new entry is the group's second #1 album in a row; its third to make the top five. The album sold 58K digital copies, which puts it at #1 on Top Digital Albums. Two songs from the album are listed on Hot Digital Songs. "Lost In Paradise" debuts at #53. "What You Want" bows at #118. 2. Adele, 21, 111,000. The former #1 album holds at #2 for the second week. This is its 34th week on the chart. It has been in the top five the entire time. Four songs from the album are listed on Hot Digital Songs, topped by "Someone Like You," which is #1 for the fourth week. 3. Five Finger Death Punch, American Capitalist, 91,000. This new entry is the group's second top 10 album. War Is The Answer hit #7 in 2009. "Remember Everything" enters Hot Digital Songs at #148. 4. Scotty McCreery, Clear As Day, 88,000. The former #1 album drops from #1 to #4 in its second week. It's #1 on Top Country Albums for the second week. Two songs from the album are listed on Hot Digital Songs. "I Love You This Big" drops from #83 to #113. "The Trouble With Girls" drops from #137 to #161. 5. Lauren Alaina, Wildflower, 69,000. This new entry is Alaina's first album. Alaina was runner-up on Season 10 of American Idol. Two songs from the album are listed on Hot Digital Songs. "Dirt Road Prayer" enters at #95. "Like My Mother Does" re-enters at #109. 6. Tony Bennett, Duets II, 55,000. The former #1 album drops from #3 to #6 in its fourth week. It has been in the top 10 the entire time. The album has sold 396K copies to date, not bad for an old guy. 7. Ryan Adams, Ashes & Fire, 49,000. This new entry is Adams' second top 10 album. It ties 2007's Easy Tiger as his highest-charting album to date. 8. Lady Antebellum, Own The Night, 47,000. The former #1 album drops from #4 to #8 in its fifth week. It has been in the top 10 the entire time. Two songs from the album are listed on Hot Digital Songs. "Just A Kiss" drops from #33 to #35. "We Owned The Night" drops from #58 to #68. 9. Lil Wayne, Tha Carter IV, 45,000. The former #1 album drops from #6 to #9 in its seventh week. It has been in the top 10 the entire time. Four songs from the album are listed on Hot Digital Songs, topped by "How To Love," which drops from #22 to #28. 10. Martina McBride, Eleven, 40,000. This new entry is McBride's sixth top 10 album. "I'm Gonna Love You Through It" jumps from #197 to #58 on Hot Digital Songs. Jack's Mannequin's People & Things plummets from #9 to #85 in its second week. Easy come, easy go. Four other albums drop out of the top 10. J. Cole's Cole World: The Sideline Story drops from #5 to #11, Feist's Metals drops from #7 to #23, Rodney Atkins' Take A Back Road drops from #8 to #25, and Blink-182's Neighborhoods drops from #10 to #26. The soundtrack to the reboot of Footloose vaults from #136 to #16 in its third week. It's the week's #1 soundtrack. The soundtrack to the 1984 original version logged 10 weeks at #1 on The Billboard 200. It was the highest-charting soundtrack for 19 weeks. Johnny Gill's first album in 15 years, Still Winning, bows at #17. It's the eighth top 20 album of Gill's career. He made the top 20 with two previous solo albums, three albums with New Edition and two albums with LSG...An eponymous album by Hunter Hayes bows at #18...Adele's 19 drops from #19 to #22. It's #1 on Top Catalog Albums for the 23rd week...Britney Spears' B In The Mix: Remixes, Vol. 2 debuts at #46. It's off to a much faster start than the first volume, which peaked at #134 in 2005...James Morrison's The Awakening debuts at #48. The album was #1 in the U.K. for two weeks before falling to #5 this week. Taylor Swift's Journey To Fearless enters Top Music Videos at #1. This is Swift's second music video to reach #1. CMT Crossroads, with Def Leppard, debuted at #1 in June 2009. Real Steel was #1 at the box-office for the second straight weekend. The soundtrack features Bad Meets Evil, Beastie Boys, Foo Fighters, 50 Cent and the Crystal Method. It sold about 1K copies, too few to make The Billboard 200. Coming Attractions: Joe's The Good, The Bad, The Sexy is expected to be next week's top new entry. Also due: Casting Crowns' Come To The Well, The Original 7even's Condensate, (they're the band formerly known as The Time), Jane's Addiction's The Great Escape Artist, Lalah Hathaway's Where It All Begins and Patrick Stump's first full-length solo album, Soul Punk.

I'm not good with math but does anyone think Lauren will beat Scotty next week?
It'll be his third week and her second. If she takes the usual 60% drop then she'll top out around 30,000... But I think she'll be able to hold up a little more. Scotty dropped 55%, using that number Lauren would be closer to 32,000.
I don't know what the average 3rd week drop is, but say Scotty decreases 50% he'd be at 44,000. That's still a difference in 12,000 at least, but you never know. Lauren's numbers were significantly smaller than Scotty's first week so she could manage a smaller percentage drop. Then again 3rd week drops aren't as drastic as 2nd week drops.
I'm not sure... We'll have to wait and see :)

Third-week drops usually aren't as large as 50%- but, nonetheless, Alaina's album overall is unlikely to sell as much as McCreery's.

We're 8 million ahead of last year and averaging 5-6 mil a week.
This is last years weekly sales up til New Years: (Week Ending (in millions)): Oct 24/2010- 5.17 (Sugarland vs KoL) Oct 31/ 2010- 5.80 (1 mil of which was T Swift, same week as Coldplay this year) Nov 7/ 2010- 5.43 (Tay's 2nd week, SuBo & Bieber release this year) Nov 14/ 2010- 6.30 (SuBo last year; this is when holiday sales generally start) Nov 21/ 2010- 8.12 (SuBo last year; I think this will be Drake's week this year) Nov 28/ 2010- 10.24 (Kanye vs. Nicki last year; Black Friday week) Dec 5/ 2010- 9.22 (SuBo; sales always recede ~10% the week after Black Friday) Dec 12/ 2010- 10.20 (SuBo) Dec 19/ 2010- 12.49 (Tay) Dec 26/ 2010- 15.08 (Tay; Christmas week) Jan 2/ 2011- 7.15 (Tay; final week of the SoundScan year)
Last year's Christmas week was the lowest ever; interesting to note that NSync's & Eminem's opening weeks in 2000 beat last year's Christmas week, and those weren't even holiday weeks.
Since last year's Holiday sales were relatively weak, we should easily beat last year.
Also, sales have only dipped below 5 mil once this year (in January) and they dipped below it 4 times last year, none of which in Q1.

Thanks, ry4n. I hadn't done that in a while. :) Thanksgiving week, though, probably is more the start of the holiday-shopping season.

I meant moreso that's when we start seeing sales go up 10-25% every week (save for the week after Thanksgiving) until Christmas. So it somewhat starts in early November (what with all the Christmas decorations going up after Halloween.) And the two weeks leading up to Thanksgiving week are generally above the weekly average for the year.

Some people don't decorate until after Thanksgiving. ;) I hear what you're saying, though. On a related note, albums released between Thanksgiving week and Christmas week really are the ones who benefit from "holiday sales," though, in terms of debuts and such. Albums released within the two-week period leading up to Thanksgiving week don't really benefit from "holiday sales" as far as their debuts go.

Wow, Scotty held up really well in his second week, only a 55% drop. I was rooting for Lauren to get the #1 country album but 69k in 2011 is still a nice showing for a runner up. I don't keep up with country actively but I'm not getting the impression that Lauren is being pushed and/or not getting as much airplay as much as Scotty. That coupled with him being the runaway winner of season 10 doesn't make it likely that she'll ever have the edge on him in any given week, let alone overall. Hopefully she'll sell steadily though, maybe she can eventually chug her way to gold.

I think Adele may have a shot at coming close to the diamond mark when all is said and done. I'm pretty sure she is gonna sell loads this holiday and might end up crossing the 5kk mark and/or coming close to the 6kk mark :)

There are 11 weeks left.
"21" needs to average 91.3k to reach 5 million before the SoundScan year ends.
Since it launched, "21" has averaged 117.5k per week.
11 weeks before 2009 ended, "Fearless" was at 3.998 million. It ended the year with 5.33 million.

With the holidays coming, I see "21" selling about 100,000 for the next few weeks. Then possibly in to the 200-400,000 range between Black Friday and Christmas. I think it'll easily beat, or at least match "Fearless".

It did awesome, that's true, but I think Adele is going to end up selling more than it did, and that's amazing.
