I don't think Stefani Gaga's radio potential depends on how many other female acts are out. I mean, it didn't keep other female acts from scoring big airplay hits- and she herself has fared well. It's not like "You And I" tanked- it just didn't have as much multiformat potential as something like "The Edge of Glory."

Unlike the past couple of singles, "Criminal" really isn't getting any airplay outside of pop (the others got so-so play at Hot AC and top 20 or near it at rhythmic), and it's not taken off there like the other singles. It may rebound some, but there's only so far it can go.

i kinda agree, especially coming off the huge #1 Take a Bow...a ballad. Although the video is phenomenal, it doesn't sound like a pop song. Human nature was a step in the right direction, but it didn't do much, either. Again, amazing video, just didn't have the IT factor.

^She had released risky singles before (whether in terms of sound/theme), but "Bedtime Story" was another animal (I'm glad she released it, though, because of the video). "Human Nature" also was kinda risky- those media tell-off singles aren't great ideas for radio, either (see Michael Jackson's "Scream," too- had that not been a lead single, it probably would not have got as high as No. 12 in airplay). Never loved "Human Nature," but, again, great video.

"You And I" was Gaga's most different-sounding single to date, but it managed a No. 6 Hot 100 peak, fitting in comfortably with her single peaks thus far.

I think WFL could make it 3-4 weeks at the top, maybe more if the sales remain steady, and it continues to pull away from SAIKI in airplay seeing thats pretty much its only competition in the near future.

BUT did it affect her status on pop radio being very different? That's also one reason why Marry the Night is interesting to follow imo.

Thanks, Codex- but, how do you do that within the post?

spoilt- "You and I" peaked at, what, No. 7 at mainstream top 40? It fared better and lasted much longer than "Judas." Her other non-No.1s at the format are "Alejandro" (No. 4) and "Edge of Glory" (No. 3). I don't think Y&I will affect her standing at the format, one way or the other.

Y&I is clearly her poorest performing single other than Judas. It matched the #6 peak of Paparazzi, but Paparazzi was definitely a much bigger hit, suffering in peak position due to the timing mismatch of airplay peak (#1) and sales peak (#3).

I'd say her biggest hits have been:

You know you've had an amazing run of singles when people are calling something like "You & I" a flop.

But "Judas" is- by far- her least successful single, in both airplay and sales. Both "Lovegame" and "Paparazzi" spent 10 weeks in the top 10 ("Paparazzi" spent six more weeks on the Hot 100 than LG). If Billboard ranked her singles via their chart runs, "Telephone" would rank higher than "Paparazzi" and "Edge of Glory" (Idid some quick math, assigning points based on their week-to-week rankings).

Y&IS is one of her least successful singles, going by chart runs and such. But it's the hardly a disastrous single, in terms of the charts. But, when one's singles have performed as well as they have, then of course anything that doesn't perform in that range is regarded as a disappointment.

jazzysoul-- Except NO ONE said it was a flop. Do you think You & I performed better than any other Gaga single (other than Judas)? That is the point. By Gaga standards, it was one of her "smallest" hits.

I edited my post, to note that "Telephone" actually would rank around No. 5, as it enjoyed a stronger overall chart run than "Paparazzi" and "Edge of Glory." I'm not sure of Billboard's exact points system, especially in terms of No. 1 peaks, so not sure if "Born This Way" would place where you have it, br (it only lasted 20 weeks on the chart, after all). And, it looks like "Alejandro" had a better chart run than "LoveGame."

I was thinking more in terms of public perception than strictly BB's chart system. You could definitely make arguments about some of the positions, primarily 5/6/7 but also 1/2 and 8/9, moving them around to something like:

1/2 Just Dance
1/2 Poker Face
3 Bad Romance
4 Born This Way
5/6/7 Paparazzi
5/6/7 Edge of Glory
5/6/7 Telephone
8/9 LoveGame
8/9 Alejandro
10 You & I
11 Judas

Some may also argue Born This Way should be lower, but I find that argument hard to swallow.

I'd put Alejandro at 8 You & I at 9 and Lovegame at 10

I think Born This way is on par with the other three above it. It will be remembered simply because the song has everything perfect and the lines are more memorable than Just Dance.

Well, public perception and chart rankings- like the charts and quality- do not go hand in hand a lot of the time. For instance, how known are "It's Raining Men" and "The Electric Slide"? Yet they peaked in the 40s and 50s on the Hot 100, respectively. But, this is another discussion. :)

This is the kind of stuff I get really interested in. I don't know if you remember my "Madonna 50" HG, but I tried to take chart stats + perception into account to come up with one overarching list. Basically finding where objectivity and subjectivity meet.

I feel comfortable with my Gaga rankings. :)

The Waitresses' "I Know What Boys Like" didn't even go top 40 and it's still one of the most recognizable tracks ever.

I totally agree with this list.

I think the only reasonable objection anyone could make here is that if one ignores chart performance and focus entirely on "public perception" or "classic" status, one MIGHT rank Bad Romance along with PF and JD instead of below them given that many people regard it as possibly THE quintessential Lady GaGa song.
