Rihanna has the 8-day effect. Since the airplay tracks the past 7 days, that first day of huge updates is now replaced by a normal day so it looks like a big loss. You can't really judge trends well until a song has been out 2 weeks.

This happened also with Party Rock Anthem when it was around 102 million a few months ago. It got a -1m, but stayed at 102 million. The update after that was based off of 102k, not the 101k that it should have been, but it probably got caught up the week after.

I still cant believe the lack of competition on the charts this year. Last year, we literally had a new #1 every week, and there were multiple songs smashing at once. Seems like radio doesnt want to let go of the big songs of the summer. As a result, it looks WFL will pretty much rule the charts this holiday season.

I thought I read that a new record was almost set for them most weeks of a different song at #1 for each.

The charts seem more competitive than last year. When everyone can get to #1, that's when it seems too easy. Like, people could sell 280k and be #1 on the Hot 100 based on sales alone last year. That doesn't seem that competitive at all. With monster hits like MLJ and RITD/SLY (and probably WFL soon) this year, it was much harder for people to nab the top spot.

The difference is that WFL is both really high in sales in airplay at the same time. SLY and MLJ were too. This point last year, between JTWYA and Firework, there weren't any songs in that position.
The #1 in airplay during most of that time frame was JTWYA (for 7 weeks) and Bruno's sales had peaked by that point. Like a G6 was the main sales force and would've been #1 for a much longer run, but a new Ke$ha song a new Rihanna/Drake song got in the way. They went staright to #1 on iTunes and G6 had low airplay and so it was easy to topple. But those 2 songs were frontloaded and dropped a lot in week 2.
And then once G6's sales had diminished, Only Girl went to #1 while only being #9 in HDS.. And then Pink barely squeezed in the week after.
It was really just a timing thing; OG and RYG were really luck to get #1 at all.

^^ Thanks for the analysis. That was a really weird time period for the charts. Only time in the chart's history that an album's first single (Only Girl) hits #1 after the second single (What's My Name).
On an unrelated note, I cannot believe how female dominated the #1s have been this year!

Sure has
Grenade Hold It Against Me Black and Yellow Born This Way ET S&M Rolling in the Deep Give Me Everything Party Rock Anthem Last Friday Night Moves Like Jagger Someone Like You We Found Love
8 out of 13 plus GME, PRA and MLJ feature female vocals and Firework was #1 for a few at the begining.
Random but 8 out of the 13 (as well as the last 6 #1's) have 3 words in their title.

2011 has had 32 weeks so far I've counted 35 in 2001 Independent Women, All For You, Lady Marmalade, Bootylicious, Fallen, I'm Real, Family Affair I'm guessing that's the record.

Yah, AIWFCIY usually peaks at around 60m-65m on Mediabase. Once Thanksgiving hits, it should see some big-time daily gains (3m-4m/daily, but then they lessen before picking up again in th days leading up to Christmas.

We Found Love is shaping up to become Rihanna longest running #1. We'll see...she'll obviously be #1 this week. She'll need three additional weeks to tie "Umbrella."

Even if it doesn't tie or surpass umbrella which I believe it will, I'm just happy Shes able to get another multi week #1. Once she snags #1 on AirPlay I think she'll be on top for awhile I really dont see anyone else surpassing her I think the only chance someone has at reaching the top in AirPlay is after she begins to fall.

Though right now, I still think Where Have You Been should be third, but I could totally see why they would choose TTT instead, especially if it ends up performing better than WHYB on Itunes this upcoming week.
