Billboard this week launches its first-ever Hot 100-style ranking of seasonal favorites with the launch of the Holiday Songs chart. Like the Hot 100, the survey ranks tracks based on a formula blending airplay, download sales and streaming data as tracked by Nielsen Entertainment.
Check Out Billboard's Holiday Charts: Songs | Albums | Airplay
The 50-position chart will appear in print and on Billboard.com and Billboard.biz through the holiday season.
Holiday Songs No. 1: Mariah Carey "All I Want for Christmas Is You" -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Topping our inaugural ranking is Mariah Carey's 1994 Christmas classic "All I Want for Christmas Is You." Carey's song also appears on the list at No. 33 in a rendition by Michael Buble that appears on his No. 1 Billboard 200 album "Christmas."
In previous years, Billboard's Holiday chart was based solely on radio airplay on adult contemporary (and a few adult top 40) stations, most of which made the switch to all or nearly all-Christmas music following Thanksgiving.
Because radio gravitates to the familiar, past Holiday Songs charts featured primarily classic Christmas tracks pre-dating this century. With the change in methodology to include downloads, streaming and airplay from all monitored radio stations, the reconfigured Holiday Songs survey presents a more balanced picture of new releases (Justin Bieber at No. 2) and traditional seasonal selections (Brenda Lee, Nat King Cole and Bobby Helms at Nos. 3-5, respectively).

It's going to be virtually identical every week of every year they do it, with just a handful of new songs each year making the cut. I appreciate the concept but it's going to be quite static I bet.

I believe this was created as a way to reiterate that the Hot 100 chart will remain a current-tracks chart, with no plans to let older tracks chart. :)
For those who may not know- the "All I Want For Christmas is You" at No. 43 is from 1989- different song than Mimi Carey's 1994 track. A pretty good one, too.

Good. That's a much better way to measure those songs' popularity. Oh, and let the Mariah reign begin :)

Thanks I always wanted to know how Whitney's DYHWIH did each year.
I wish Oh Santa was given some love from Top 40 and Rythmic last year. It is such a fun song and one that you can actually tell is a Christmas song. Most people who hear it end up liking it.

So, should I post the holiday airplay updates in this thread or the other? :) I'm not sure what the issue is, but since the other thread has information going back months, wouldn't it make more sense to post the BB updates in that thread?

I put this as a separate thread to emphasize a brand new chart. HG's original thread seems appropriate for what he is doing

I'm surprised no version of "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" is charting, whether it be Mariah, U2's or the original.

^One's probably not that far from the top 50 (whether Buble, Carey or U2)- we should see at least one appear on the next four charts.

Thanks, 2m. :)
Yay for "Santa Baby" bringing up the rear. :) It,'"Do You Hear What I Hear" and "Winter Wonderland" are the titles from A Very Special Christmas to chart.

^It definitely has similar lyrical ideas to the other track (how could it not with the title), but, yeah, not a cover. :) Mimi's also said how some think her track is a cover.

In some ways I can see how it's a bit insulting for people to assume that Mariah couldn't have written such a classic, but on the other hand, I think it's a testament to how classic the song is that people think it must be an old song that people have been singing for decades. ^*HGuy nitpicky, chime-in moment* "Where Are You Christmas"- while having Mimi input in lyrics- existed before her involvement, in the form of "Christmas, Why Can't I Find You" (heard in The Grinch movie). The chorus and melody is the same in both versions, with Mimi adding lyrics to flesh it out and make it a lengthier track. So, in that regard, it's much less of a "Mimi song" than something like AIWFCIY.
But, of course, she is credited as one of the writers, so carry on. :)
