It's that high because of the discount though... When it was full priced it was starting to fall. If there is a single #7, it will eventually get the discount and remix treatment that LFN and TOTGA have gotten. Also, it's sales are lower than previous singles were at this point in spite of the remix; the earlier songs were assisted sales wise by the slow & steady pace of album sales. That's why the last two haven't sold nearly as well in spit of being massive radio hits, having rent-a-rapper remixes, and a nearly 40% discount. Short of re-releasing I doubt anymore singles from TD will stand a strong chance of hitting the top spot. On a separate note, I think NIP will contend for the top spot in coming weeks. It's been chillin in the Top 10 on iTunes for some time and has massive AI, but it's just taking off on pop radio now and the video has yet to be released.

Havent remixes hurt the longevity of the original on Itunes?
S&M, TTWE, and LFN's originals all suffered because of the last minute remixes. I'd say if she isnt able to get it this week, she probably wont have another chance.

^Not really, the remixes all started collapsing sales-wise the same week they were released.

Gary Trust in this week's Ask Billboard reiterates how the charts are essentially a game and that labels want to break records, how charts don't mean anything in terms of how one act compares to another, etc. etc. Basically everything we've discussed here. :)

One thing to realize is that the only way to take advantage of chart tactics and such is that the song has to be a hit to begin with. These tactics don't work for songs that are not already charting high.
Case in point, no amount of manipulation at this point it seems is going to get any of the singles from 4 into the Top 10...

I think people do understand that but enjoy discrediting Katy. Anyone can't put out a discount and potentially hit #1...otherwise the bubbling under songs and the songs on the lower part of the hot 100 would use this all the time. Charts are a game anyways.

Of course, the songs that have these other versions have to be riding high on the chart to begin with, in order to have a shot at No. 1.

The song is #5 in airplay and was a Top 10 digital hit before discounting even though out for 18 months. Let's see MJ (with Stevie Wonder - no stunt casting there) peaked at #11 with single number six. Katy has already beaten MJ and if you want to throw in SC as sixth Top 10, she's outpeaked that. Number 1 is gravy. Now time to nab Janet's wig for seven Top 5s.

You're right - I though SW had backing vocals on the song. The Alzheimer's is kicking in. It's been 23 years! Yikes!

No one else in history since Jackson has come close. you can't convince me that any other artist would not do the same in these circumstances. You just can't.

That reminds me, with Rihannas airplay being 148 million, and her sales probably falling from the 149k she had last week, would We Found Love be the first #1 song to get more points from airplay than sales?
edit: in the past 5 years.
