Well either way, its gonna be very difficult for her to get the #1 next week, especially since they didnt release it today giving it a full day of sales.

After all the fuss about Katy Perry (several pages) people think Madonna of all acts will be number one and Katy's attempt won't? Sometimes Pulse just confuses me. Neither is definite, but Madonna has the inherently better set-up - her single will be 'fresh,' is getting one of the biggest promotional debuts ever, and if I'm not mistaken she's releasing the song to radio one week before it goes on sale. So there will then be two full weeks of A.I. points to add to the first-week sales as well. There will also be less competition in February (and the competition that is there may be less stiff) than what Katy has now in December. Though news of the remix has been released it doesn't feel all that 'hyped' to the public. This could be another LFN-featuring-Missy situation where the remix doesn't sell enough to even get the featured artist a credit on the chart. But at least LFN was already within striking distance of #1 and only needed a little boost...TOTGA has a huge airplay gap between it and WFL that it would have to overcome and she has to hope no other song overcomes that gap even more. She likely won't be the only song on sale the week after Christmas either, so that supposed advantage will also be gone. I just don't think the remix is going to do the trick in these next two weeks. Or maybe they're not concerned about that b/c they expect the song to squeeze its way to the top in January, when the post-Christmas rush is over. But if that was the case they probably should have waited until January to release the remix. Not saying that TOTGA absolutely won't do it, but I actually think if Capitol and Katy really want a sixth #1 they should probably put their money on single #7 doing it (Hummingbird Heartbeat or Peacock); the odds are simply slightly against TOTGA at the moment.

Madonna hitting #1 is pretty unlikely (particularly with this song, which, unless it features a total makeover beyond just adding some raps, is pretty average).
But if she does she'll rewrite some records. I think she'll instantly be the oldest woman to have a #1 single. And if I'm not mistaken she'll be the only artist over 40 to have a #1 song since... herself back in 2000 with "Music." She'll also have #1s in four (consecutive) decades.

And what would some viewpoints of it being average have to do with its chart potential, br? :) I agree, though, that No. 1 is unlikely, but I guess there's always a small chance- it's not like we're talking about an act who hasn't had a top 10 hit in eons.

It's weird to think she'll be oldest female to hit #1. Cher SEEMED much older when she set record in 1999. BTW - If they really want it to hit number 1, they should have a no-rap version. Most of Madonna's fans are not interested in a rent-a-rapper nonsense verse. The only way this would really work is if was a seamless as Snoop on CG.

I'd argue that if you are a currently hot superstar racking up hits, you could score a hit with a not-so-great song just by virtue of being popular in general. But for someone like Madonna, who has only had 3 top tens in the past 10 years, I think it will take a really great song to gain any traction. And I should note I'm talking US here -- she's fared much better just about everywhere else during recent years.

Cher's oldest woman to hit #1 record is quite safe
Unless, Madonna plans a duet with Rihanna, Katy Perry or some other artist who frequently is at the top today

7. JAY Z & KANYE WEST - N***** In Paris: 94.796 (+ 1.021)
I can't even rememeber the last time a pure rap song (one without a sing-song hook) has done this well on radio. It's practically unheard of.

So, are Nicki Minaj and MIA big enough artists to bring Madonna a #1 hit in her 50s? It doesn't happen all the time, like someone cited Britney Spears and it nearly happened with Madonna a few years ago but it does happen

It doesn't happen all the time, like someone cited Britney Spears and it nearly happened with Madonna a few years ago but it does happen If the song is released on iTunes right after the Super Bowl performance (which will also feature those two), it has a STRONG chance imo.

It's that high because of the discount though... When it was full priced it was starting to fall. If there is a single #7, it will eventually get the discount and remix treatment that LFN and TOTGA have gotten.
