Things settled down a little bit this week, especially up in the Top Ten. All three songs that made gigantic leaps up the chart last week come to a screeching halt and the only change there is between numbers one and nine is that Bethany Dillon and Chris Tomlin switch chart positions. Jeremy Camp still holds his ground at number one for a sixth week running. I have no idea what'll happen in weeks to come, though. For all we know, "Walk By Faith" could stay up there for twenty weeks, just like MercyMe did with "Word Of God Speak" last year.
There aren't many big upward moves within the Top 20; just a pair of songs that move up a spot. But the big story is the debut songs. They are all unusually high up. I don't ever remember a week where all the debut songs were above number 15. Yes, I know "All I Need" debuted at number ten with no new songs below it, but it was the only debut that week; I'm talking two or more songs. I remember one week in the spring or summer of 2003 when the bottom debut was number fifteen, but at this point, I forget even what it was. I had to be somewhere before the show ended, so I don't even have any idea where the other debut was that week. Anyhoo, I'm sort of rambling on here... Both debuts are former Jon's Future Favorite picks. "He Is Exhalted" by Shane and Shane is the song that comes in at number 14, and it was the JFF song back on September 18. The other debut song is the new song by Watermark, "Glory Of Your Name" and that comes in all the way up at number ten! Will this be a number one song in the near future? We won't know until it happens, since as we all know, high debuts and big moves don't seem to mean much.
Right in between the two songs is another former JFF song, from all the way back in late July. But it's not just now hitting the chart; it actually debuted back in late August, but mysteriously disappeared from the chart last week. It comes back in a major way, up at number twelve. The song is "King" by Tree63 and it arrives not a moment too soon, as their older song, "Blessed Be Your Name" finally exits the survey this week after an impressive 35-week run.
However, it looks like that record could be challenged in the near future. MercyMe still hangs tough at number two in its 29th week on the chart. Barring a fast fall, it should have no problem beating the record. By the way, I just thought of something. 35 weeks might not be the record after all. Does anyone know how long the aforementioned "Word Of God Speak" spent on the chart? Since it was still on the chart in March, it had to have been on for at least 34 weeks, and that would be if it debuted at number one, which I very much doubt it did. So I think Jon may have gotten some bad information as to how long Matthew West had been on the chart, since it seems like that song would have been on longer than 33 weeks, based on when Jon said it debuted. Unless he doesn't count the weeks that are pre-empted by holiday specials. That's the only logical explanation I can think of.
The Jon's Future Favorite this week is a song called "Dancing With Angels" but I don't remember who sings it. The name of the group sounded very odd to me.
