In trend with the TikTok meme: Can we skip to the good part? *AJR falls off chart*

Why does it seem like there’s still a freeze? It’s January 12th, seems like it should be over by now?

The updates have been awful for most songs the past couple of days...is something going on to cause this?

They're referring to the terrible updates, not recurrent rules. Only three songs received movements in the triple digits. This is bizarre. The updates have been awful for most songs the past couple of days...is something going on to cause this? I just got an email from all access saying the top 40 ratings are down 30% due to sterile programming Seems like an easy fix to me: quit having sterile programming.

Yeah I was referring to the updates. I doubt sterile programming is the main issue (also how would they know for sure?). Streamings dominance and the Covid situation has likely changed a lot of peoples habits for listening to music.

It also doesn’t look like the audience exactly corresponds to the spin changes

It's possible that AllAccess and Mediabase are prepping for a massive housecleaning of months-old hits on CHR. I would certainly be in favor of that after months of Stay being in the top 2.

And it took me til today to realize that Life Goes On is not by AJR (there's def an influence there imo) ... quite a few other people thought so too
I think I'm Ready will always be my fave tbh, the SpongeBob sample was iconic

The steril programming thing is interesting because while I don’t think that’s necessarily wrong, I also wonder, what could programmers replace the current hits with? I was catching up on all the recent new songs to enter the top 40 over the last couple months (I make it a rule to always have the top 40 from CHR in my “currents” playlist, but sometimes I fall behind in listening to them) and what a disappointing bunch of songs. Nothing interested me. I get that I’m not the target demographic for top 40 radio but I’d like to think I can at least pick the good from the bad. Everything just felt so lazy and stale.

Maybe the problem isn't necessarily the content on radio (although with enough time and research/effort plenty of people could tell you what they think radio should be playing). A great first step would be if radio wouldn't take so f**king long to *do* something with new content. The number of times I've watched songs get killed off 'cause radio sat on them too long, so they never got the *chance* to resonate before radio decided 'this ain't working #UNPLUG' (hint: you're the reason it didn't take since you didn't f**king play it in the first place, idiot).
Olivia's chart run for 'Driver's License' was perfect to me, and the kind of chart run I really wish radio would re-normalize. Didn't take forever to reach the top, spent a respectable run at the top for a hit of its magnitude, and didn't overstay its welcome before moving the f**k on.

The problem seems fairly obvious to me—the chart is too top-heavy.
A quick calculation shows that the #1 song is getting 90x the plays of the #50 song and 30x the plays of the #40 song.
That’s so far out of whack that listeners are going to (rightly) think pop radio only plays about 5 songs at a time.

Oh don’t get me wrong, I think overplay is a huge reason why people tune out. I haven’t listened to radio in a while because of it (and I used to have it on during the day while I ate and stuff, because it’s easier than putting on a record), but when your options are to play “Stay” and “Blinding Lights” vs some new song that isn’t very good, the choice is clear - at least for me. I know there must be loads of great songs out there that aren’t getting noticed while so much of the bottom half of the chart is filled with songs that just aren’t hits. I think PDs could take more risks, (and probably would if the entire industry wasn’t made up of what, two conglomerates?) but in order to drop the overplayed hits from rotation, there needs to be something to replace them with and from what I can see, that’s what’s lacking.
Side note: that doesn’t explain why Adele’s new song seems to be struggling right now, among other examples.

That's why "Oh My God" is faltering cause its released too soon... I heard that The Weekend (two weeks removed from the release of "Sacrifice") is having another song, "Gasoline", out for impact ... Worried that it can falter quickly too

Worried that it can falter quickly too I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing. I’d rather two songs by the same artist in heavy rotation if it means spreading out the time between replaying the same song over again. I’ve always thought the scheduling of singles following the previous one and ‘waiting’ for it to be ‘done’ felt so…forced? Idk if that’s the best word. But we’re in an era where artists can have multiple songs out simultaneously and people aren’t necessarily forced to choose just one, so why not go ahead with it. It won’t always work, of course, but I think it can help in the promotion of a new album by getting more songs out there.

Just ask Doja Cat. Her album has to be one of the most fascinating to watch in recent years, at least when it comes to singles.
But I think that her execution makes sense- release songs that are doing well on streaming already, regardless of whether the current single is still climbing. Not sure if The Weeknd is in the same boat, although I heard the album is really good.

Remembers when Positions outlasted 34+35 in the top 10, just as POV was also entering the top 10.

There are instants that single by one artist are getting release too quickly --- not like the ole days when they wait til 12-15 weeks later to release follow ups from one album ... That's why "Oh My God" is faltering cause its released too soon... I heard that The Weekend (two weeks removed from the release of "Sacrifice") is having another song, "Gasoline", out for impact ... Worried that it can falter quickly too I wouldn't count out "Oh My God" yet--a lot of songs even by big names stall in the mid teens or thereabouts for a while before regaining momentum. But if it's already peaking, then we're seeing a repeat of what happened during her last album era six years ago, when "When We Were Young" was pushed to radio while "Hello" was still at the top, and didn't make the top 10. Months passed before she had another big CHR hit, with "Send My Love (To Your New Lover)".

If Heat Waves makes it to the top, that’ll be 2/2 for post-recurrent chart runs!
