The last song of theirs before that to enter the Top 50 was Irresistible in 2016 where it reached No. 23. None of their last album from 2018 made the pop chart despite being more pop than the rest of their discography ironically enough.

I’d add to the possibles: Pink Pantheress (she was on the building chart for 3 days) and Tyga/Chris Brown (on for four days with spins over 100 with 3 days left in the week). NewJeans is also possible.

With the minuscule spin count, it really could be anything. The 8-10 listed above or could be a random hanger-on played by a few stations.

I'll be interested to see if the super low spin threshold is just a temporary thing, or if it's going to become the norm now that many pop stations are switching to more of a "only the biggest hits and your old favorites" model. Currently, my CHR has only 10 new songs in their playlist, and eight of them are only in evening/overnight rotation. It seems like we're definitely seeing a shift as radio is desperately trying to cling onto cultural relevance in the age of streaming by playing a lot of throwback tunes that people haven't heard in a while. I could definitely see this becoming a more permanent change, as radio shifts towards a model that draws upon comfort/familiarity, rather than a place to discover new music.

I was wondering with all of these purges and recurrents, plus the dearth of new songs if Mediabase would be changing recurrent rules to be more in line with Billboard. I really hope not, but I don’t think it’s out of the realm of possibility.

To sound like the old man I am, I wish we could go back to the days of lots of songs charting each year with songs sticking around at most six months. Or even just more balance. It wasn’t that long ago that it took well over 1000 spins to hit Top 40. Now that gets you close to Top 30.
