Hasn’t this happened before where spins get so low people think that radio is soon going to come to an end? It always has seemed to be like it’s resolved itself eventually. I still think that this is an extreme, but I have faith pop radio will get it together.

We'll see if the next likely four weeks of no recurrents gives the thresholds a chance to rebuild a bit. I'm a little skeptical with just how many songs are dropping in the 30s though, we may have too many purges to let the chart build back up.

I still think that this is an extreme, but I have faith pop radio will get it together. Not like this but it’s also not just the low spin thresholds but also the length of time the big hits hold on near the top of the chart, the number of recurrents holding steady in play count, the length of time it takes new hits to build. And taking a step back from the chart itself, it’s also looking at the general climate of the industry and even general listening habits. It’s not the 90s or the 2000s anymore. Radio’s place among other means of music consumption has changed. That’s the tell. So looking at the factors above thru that lens in that context kind of spells it out. |

#11-20 is such a f**king mess. It's either sluggish movements or a slaughterhouse. We really need radio to rip the guts out of this top 10, but for what? Radio isn't setting a damn thing up as a top 10 replacement. Well there's Ed, but isn't that song like... not connecting? Radio's basically giving a free ride to a dud, and there is no other top 10 contender in sight. Gaga, Lizzo, Miley? Nope, gotta kill them off early (although in Miley's case it looks like all 'River' did was over-water 'Flowers' 'cause now it's springing back up like weeds). Sabrina and Niall look pretty stunted right now.
We need turnover but right now it's like, what's the point?

Why did Happy have an eighth day affect, but not Waffle House? They both got hit differently by the start of the rolling effect, but technically speaking they both took an 8th day hit. Radio's just been much faster to get onboard with the JoBros song so it still found spin growth on its 8th day; but radio hasn't been picking NF up as strongly so his 8th day was smaller than his 1st day. |

Looks like a Purgocalypse is scheduled for tomorrow. I count 5 songs that look ripe for purging, so we'll have to see how many of them actually go. As of yesterday I wouldn't have been surprised at all to see the threshold dip below 100 spins, but of course Post debuted and Labrinth/Billie cracked top 50 and brought the threshold back up so we'll have to see what happens.

Apparently, from what I’ve read here, WAYF was kept alive by a handful of stations that kept it in rotation, but with lack of a label “push” it sat in limbo in the 40s for months. Now that Post finally has an official new, promoted single in “Chemical” perhaps they’ll finally let go of it. |

It's not, but if streaming is how we're measuring connection that's the whole problem right there - almost nothing in the 11-20 range is connecting (except for Morgan Wallen, unfortunately). Last Night is #1 on Spotify, Nonsense is currently 109 and Eyes Closed just re-entered the daily chart today at 190. Everything else is outside the top 200. Nonsense should have gone top 10 weeks ago but radio hemmed and hawed on it when it was peaking on streaming, and now that it has lost most of that steam seems to be confused as to whether it's better late than never for it. Eyes Closed is outright bombing in the US to the point that a sudden turnaround is very unlikely, so I honestly don't care that Ed is just getting by on name status and a label willing and able to inve$t more than others bc I don't see EC taking up space for long anyway. Atlantic will most likely move to a second single after the album is out. It's not just 11-20 though; pop music as a whole is apparently just a dud ass genre right now. Looking through the current Spotify top 200 it seems like every sound EXCEPT pop is doing well - if it isn't Taylor Swift or one of a handful of older pop hits that are still hanging around a pop track today might as well be nonexistent. And either radio is bad at picking the non-pop songs that are worth spinning or labels are bad at guessing which non-pop singles/artists are worth sending to pop radio bc there are a lot of songs below #20 that, even in the lower reaches, aren't really showing streaming numbers that match or justify the spins they're getting. Moving further up the chart here isn't going to change that for most of these songs. On the other hand, everyone in the top 10 at the moment is in the top 100 on Spotify and only Raye is outside the top 50 (she's #68). So when radio does get a guess right or finally stumbles upon a pop song with a good reception, it turns into a top 10 hit that they hang on to for dear life because goodness, what else is there to play?! I think the pop PDs don't know what to do because they've been relying so heavily on streaming to tell them what's good instead of just figuring out what their regular audience (which may or may not have any shared tastes with streamers) wants to hear, and streaming is basically telling them 'fuck your format.' We can't see call out anymore but I bet those scores are looking funky too. |
