For as much as we (rightfully) complain about radio hanging on too long to old hits, I'm struck by how unusually 'young' the chart has been for the past three or four weeks. Only four songs in the top fifty have been on for 20 or more weeks, and once Bloody Mary is removed as a recurrent, that will go down to three. Unfortunately we're getting the heaviest action at the bottom, with a steady stream of purges.

On the upside, it looks like Nonsense will finally get that top 10 peak, barring radio suddenly dumping it out of nowhere (don't screw this one up, please, radio gods)! Seeing Bloody Mary give up the ghost at the exact moment that it could have snuck in a week for itself was annoying enough. Nonsense needs to just hold steady for the next six days while Players drops.

At the rate Karma is moving, there is a chance Last Night gets locked out. Morgan is no longer gaining fast enough to catch up to Sabrina or Ed before Taylor leapfrogs them all so he's really dependent on hanging on long enough to see radio cut both Eyes Closed and Nonsense before another big release zooms up the chart.

Wait, it did?! Well never mind lol! I was so annoyed when I saw it tank from the #11 spot the week Eyes Closed first entered, but if it peaked before that then yeah I can see how I blinked and missed it. I'm just now getting back to the point where I can check the chart every day, or close to every day. (I will become Active Rose again some day soon is2g)

Even if we do get to 5, I doubt the top 50 threshold will drop anywhere near 100. Looks like over 60 songs had over 100 spins last week, so the chart can weather losing five songs without threatening JoBro’s record.

Top 40, on the other hand, is gonna drop to near its nadir of ~400, unless we have release deals later this week.

This was a fascinating read! Thanks for sharing!

I've been thinking about it a little lately, and I kinda feel like the only thing that would "save" top 40 would be for stations to go back to having their own unique sound. KENZ in Salt Lake City, UT is an example that sticks out to me. They don't necessarily just play whatever's in the top 20 over and over, and they even play some obscure songs that aren't on the charts. (Their current playlist shows stuff like Mike Posner's "I'm Not Dead Yet," Lost Frequencies' "Where Are You Now," and Empire of the Sun's "Walking on a Dream" still in regular rotation) They kind of have an indie pop/dance pop sound that is distinct to them, which I have a soft spot for, as it's become pretty much unheard of in the modern radio climate of increasingly synchronized playlists.

I think stations having a unique sound would go a long way. A common argument for people not listening to the radio is that every station just plays the same 10 songs over and over, but if more stations took KENZ's example, people might think of it like putting on a Spotify playlist in the car. If stations started creating more unique sounds for themselves (i.e. dance-pop, rhythmic leaning pop, country pop, etc.) rather than being faceless entities that just play all the same top 20 hits, it might attract more people to turn on that station in the car if they liked the sound of the station's playlist. As a chart watcher, I think this model would be super cool too, as it would spice up the charts.

I don't think there's any likelihood of radio becoming as popular as it once was, because in the age of streaming, it's hard to imagine the younger generation say "boy, I can't wait to listen to the radio!" lol. However, I liked the article's point about trying to appeal to parents so that they play it in the car for their kids, which in turn will hopefully plant a seed to inspire kids to think of radio as a viable way to listen to music.

That article also brought up a fascinating point about who is actually listening to top 40 radio. There are plenty of jokes in various threads of the Pop forum that "only soccer moms listen to radio," but it's interesting to think about who the target audience is. I would argue it's probably either parents in their 30s or 40s (maybe 50s), or twenty-somethings like myself who grew up with the radio still being a decently big thing during our childhoods.

I also thought it was interesting how the article mentioned specifically "mothers" and "daughters," which would imply that women are more of a target demographic for top 40 radio than men. It made me think about how my station has had a "why do I listen to this station?" campaign going on recently (presumably as a last ditch desperate effort to say "please keep listening! There are still reasons to love us!" lol), where they play bumpers before songs of listeners giving a brief reason why they listen to the station. I hadn't thought about it previously, but I believe all the bumpers I've heard have been women. That would kind of confirm the article's implication that women are more of a target demographic for top 40 radio than men, which is interesting.

As an unrelated aside, there's another non-monitored station about an hour away from me that has kind of a fascinating playlist of throwbacks, which I think would be another cool model. They are one of the few stations that still has a full hour every day of all throwbacks, and they are pretty obscure ones (a couple examples that show up in their playlist now are En Vogue's "Don't Let Go," DJ Kool's "Let Me Clear My Throat," and Jagged Edge's "Where the Party At?") They also still have radio contests where they will have listeners call in and "finish the lyric," or answer a trivia question about older songs, which I think is quite neat and admirable. It would be a long shot, but if radio does transition into a Hot AC model, another way to keep radio alive would be to intentionally cater to much older audiences, and lean into the nostalgia through playing obscure throwbacks and doing old-school radio contests.
