Best new artist nominees The Lumineers took their turn on the dais to announce the Country Solo Performance nominees: Dierks Bentley “Home,” Eric Church “Springsteen,” Ronnie Dunn “Cost of Livin’,” Hunter Hayes “Wanted” (he must have gone to the same “shock face” coach as Taylor Swift), Blake Shelton “Over” and “Blown Away” by Carrie Underwood. The category is solid, but Carrie Underwood is always a strong contender.Read more: entertainment.time.com/2012/12/06/the-2013-grammy-nominees-are/#ixzz2EdP8Y5nA

Blown Away was named the #8 country album of 2012 by Pop Matters: to me the #4 album on that list renders the entire list irrelevant nice write up for BA though

I don't think Carrie's material is "shallow," or "loud" at all. I think she's often pegged as the poster child for generic music just because she won a talent show, frankly. She put out a great debut album, and since then she has done a ton to establish her artistic credibility. She cowrites her material, has had 3 solid, creative headlining tours, and has developed nicely into a confident, polished performer. On top of that, she has also covered a diverse collection of songs, and become an even better singer than she was on Idol 7 years ago.
If anything, I feel like the criticism of Carrie is a little unfair. Comparing the artist she is now compared to the shy Oklahoma girl we saw on Idol would be like comparing apples and oranges. I think Carrie is really bothered by the idea that she's some shallow, fake artist, and I think her hard work developing as a songwriter, singer, and performer proves that she has the desire to keep improving. She's one of the few artists who actually seems invested and passionate in her career to the point where she WANTS to be better; it doesn't seem to be just about selling albums, but pushing herself. I've been very impressed with Carrie's growth as an artist over the past seven years, and I'm excited to see where she goes next.
Take her performance of "How Great Thou Art" at Girls Night Out as an example; she nailed it, and couldn't have been more emotional. I think the best part of her journey, for me, has been watching her develop her own vision, and I think she has done a lot to show she wants to be seen as a serious artist who gets better with time.

Since Carrie wrote about hoping that she will be able to thank her fans on stage tonight at the ACAs, I'm guessing she won something since the ACAs told the winners they won before the show (like when they announced that Chris Young won something and then he was already on stage ready to perform). I'm assuming they will probably be doing that again to try and get more artists to actually show up this year. Plus, there was a winky face after that sentence so that could imply she knows something we dont

I know Miranda and Carrie have been friends for a long time, but they seem extra chummy lately. If those two ever got together for a duet, it'd be pretty killer! The two of them combined on a country revenge anthem would be insane.

Fun show to attend! Carrie was flawless, and she left the slop show right after she won. Such a smart gal. I know Miranda and Carrie have been friends for a long time, but they seem extra chummy lately. If those two ever got together for a duet, it'd be pretty killer! The two of them combined on a country revenge anthem would be insane. They've already collaborated live a couple times before.

But it'd be cool to see an original recorded duet.

Guys, not sure if I'm right but I noticed one thing. "Blown Away" has had better longevity than Carnival Ride and Play On.

Where have they collaborated live? I'd like to see? links please? Sony Showcase, Country Radio Seminar (CRS) ... which was so well-received that they performed it again as the opening number on the ACMs, with assistance from fellow stars... They also did a mash-up of Before He Cheats and Gunpowder and Lead in Capital Hoedown in Ottawa,Canada.

OMG thank you.
Imagine what they could do together, they looked great on stage together, imagine a woman scorned uptempo from the two, it would work wonders.
I'm about to go watch the second one now, ah the possibilities and I wonder which I'll prefer lol.

This question has never really been answered, but I'm curious, does anyone with musical/vocal knowledge know what Carrie's range is? A blogger compiled a list of the range of various female singers, but I'm pretty sure it was inaccurate; she said Carrie has the same range as Taylor, Miley, Jewel, and Nicole Sherzinger. Can anyone with knowledge of vocals/range answer this? :)

This thread should be moved.
But...I'm pretty sure Miley and Nicole have at least equal or greater (more likely) range.

Miley can sing really low and Nicole actually has a great range, so that wouldn't surprise me in the least.
Usually you can find YouTube videos with most popular female singer's ranges and about 40,000 notes to go with them. They aren't always 100% accurate but usually pretty close.

You could have three octaves but sound like shit in two of them. *raises hand* Range is really only impressive when you combine it with other factors such as power, tone, clarity, and pitch control.

I have to second that. If you five octaves but sound like death in four of them, I would consider that effectively a one octave range.
