This has to be the funniest sh it I've seen on active so far this year. Granted, it's only 4 spins, but why are there active stations playing Corey "Angelic 2 the Core" Feldman? Maybe Corey Feldman was a guest star on some radio show or interview at those stations? Other than that the song just doesn't scream Active Rock to me.

Since death bed is rising up the ranks, I’m just going to say that TikTok did us dirty by not making this beabadoobee’s alternative breakthrough instead. It probably wouldn’t do that well but it would be awesome to see this chart. Better than that one Powfu song that got an alt add a week or two ago. Some of y’all are going to love this one. Don’t let death bed subvert your expectations here. It really gets going in the chorus. IMO it’s literal ear candy. Also on that topic, let’s talk album tracks and songs that should’ve been sent to alt/AAA/active radio! This was one the last Rock Madness rankdown series.
And about Album tracks that should've been sent to radio....He Is by Ghost. A crime that this wasn't sent to Active.
"He Is" is my favorite track on any Ghost release. It probably would have been their first number-one, before "Square Hammer" which is also a good song. "Hearts/Wires" by Deftones; I was really pushing for that song but now we just have to wait for the new album.

Might as well do this chart run thing first because I’ve already listened to the new entry this week. Biffy Clyro and guardin re-enter; their chart runs have been removed for the time being.
“Champion of the World” - Coldplay Peak: 28 (1) Weeks On: 8
“Let’s Fall in Love for the Night” - FINNEAS Peak: 17 (1) Weeks On: 14
“Used to Like” - Neon Trees Peak: 4 (1) Weeks On: 25

So, what would you guys personally define as a hit on a radio-based format? I’m purely interested in what y’all have to say here, because I have my own opinion. What defines it for you? Chart position, where in the top 40 it charted, if it makes the year end, if you heard it on the radio once, if you heard it on the radio more than once, how many weeks it spent on the chart, how many points it got? Any of those could possibly define it for you.

For me a big radio hit used to mean multiple plays on MTV or charting on the hot 100, but Hot 100 used to be rock oriented. That's all changed and means nothing to me now. It's always been about the top 10 action or a steady climb into the top 10. Also the weeks a song spends on a chart are important, but only on the climb. I like that songs go recurrent after they fall out of top 10. I usually do the same on my own personal charts. This keeps a song from becoming a hated eyesore or in this case earsore. I tend to prefer radio station yearly top 100's over Billboard and Mediabase, because they are based more on a target audience and what that audience in that area likes. for example: DREAMCAR "Kill For Candy" a decent chart hit with a honorable top 100 year end position , but on 91x radio station that song was a huge top 10 hit of the year. so recap goes like this.
1. Chart position and chart run 2. Radio airplay and repeat plays 3. How it ages through the years 4. Yearly top 100 position. These are meaning less and less to me especially after viewing some of the early 90's and late 80's mainstream rock top 100's. They don't reflect nothing about what I remember on the radio. I would like my favs to show up, but I'm not too crazy about that points system. I still don't forgive Billboard for that bottom 50 position they gave to "Another One Bites The Dust.

as far as genre charts, anything that goes top 10 is a hit to me ... but other songs that don’t make it that far but have longevity can be hits too ... then there are songs that stand the test of time that may have had a shoddy chart run (or none at all) but become recurrent staples. For example, Violent Femmes were ignored on pop & rock radio in the 80s, “Melt With You” didn’t make much of a splash either...but they are considered hits now in retrospect.

For me, longevity is key. Any song that hits 20 weeks or more on the chart is a hit in my opinion. Sometimes songs don’t make 20 weeks but instead 18 or 19 weeks. I’d consider those hits too. Any song within reason with at least 15 weeks is considered a hit by me.
I got some statistics on chart years using 2019 as my test year. I inferred that every year would have a similar result as 2019. Here are some stats I got from doing that:
• about 20% of all songs that chart will have exactly 20 weeks if you count carryover songs from the previous year that hit 20 weeks in the new year as well as songs that carry over into the next chart year and hit 20 weeks then • about 31% of all songs will chart for more than 20 weeks using the same conditions as above • there is a 51% chance a song will spend 20 or more weeks on chart • there is a 49% chance a song will spend 19 or less weeks on the chart
Interestingly, results are basically skewed down the middle concerning whether a song will have longevity or not. They do show a small amount of favor towards songs with longevity. 80 songs charted for 20 or more weeks in 2019 and 76 songs charted for 19 or less weeks in 2019.
It’s a bit cool to see a song peak below the top 15 and still get more than 20 weeks. It isn’t the rarest occurrence but it only happened three times in between the 2019 chart year and early 2020 chart year. It’s also cool to see a song below the top 25 chart for 20 weeks, that only happened once in the 2019 chart year.
These stats will probably slightly differ per year but I believe they’ll still somewhat fit the model.

Thanks - I had flipped the alternate answer and the primary answer, inadvertently. (I wanted to accept both the correct spelling and "Meyers", but I put them in the wrong order.) Thank you for checking it out!

The Chain Gang of 1974 - "Honey Moon Drips" Previewed some songs from here. Good music I just wish I wasn't so bunt out of the echo male indie vocals. "Such A Shame" is the melodic pick hit for me.

Interesting, but his reply was also something of note. I don’t know why this decision was just made this year. As I understand it, the “Hot Rock Songs” chart will be renamed and hopefully reorganized. As everyone knows, that chart has been a victim of stagnation. It seems that the addition of radio play on the alternative chart will join the streaming and sales of the Hot chart. I wonder if AAA and active radio play will count towards this as well. It would definitely make for a more varied chart. I don’t see why they wouldn’t.

All that is confirmed via Arist Chart History is the rename, but we have clues that could signify a rebrand (i am apart of talk of the charts btw)

Was this really necessary? As if there is not enough to listen to already! I do not want to know what I would do if streaming stopped being a thing. The album releases will hopefully slow down once we get through all the postponed stuff, this is getting kinda silly. I do have a even more albums that were released on the 29th: * The Howl & The Hum - "Human Contact", their full-length debut. British Indie Rock, but it is fairly eclectic. Great vocals. * The Cool Greenhouses - "The Cool Greenhouses", also their full-length debut. Spoken-word, experimental Post-Punk. * Vandenberg - "2020", Adje is using the orignial name again, after 35 years. Just some plain, good ol' Hard Rock, includes a re-recording of 'Burning Heart'. Rock on, Bob Patience I've been making it a weekly thing to look up new album releases for myself for quite some time now to discover new music other than what's shown on the charts. Mainly because 80% of the artists that are on there now make stuff that I couldn't care less about. Over the last I want to say... two years or so, I asked people on here if they would like me to post a list each week to discover new music from artists that may not be on radio, but maybe they'd be a fan of anyway. Enough people seemed to be welcomed to it, so while it takes me on some weeks 3-4 hours to make this list with the research involved, I really don't mind doing it. Until literally everyone on this board tells me to stop posting them, I'm going to keep on going. Ya know, you can just skip over the list if it's overwhelming I totally get what you're saying though. Since I make these lists each week, I end up putting a ridiculous amount of them on my own lists. I've listened to 159 new albums from this year already and added 23 just from the last two weeks. It can get very very very tiresome at times to keep up with, but I love the joy of hearing new music even if some albums that I thought would be great end up just being "meh" or some surprise me and end up being favorites of the year. I totally expect me to listen to over 400 new albums this year. I might have a mental breakdown by December, but dammit. Ima do it! Keep rockin' on, Bob and thanks for the additions to the May 29th list

All I know is that Billboard has been rebranding every few years and their web designs are getting worse. Come on, guys. Get it together!

I think there needs to be an alternative to alternative chart as the current Alt chart has become the new pop-that-doesn’t-exclude-rock-chart
move a few of the existing reporters & add in college stations

Artists like Tyler the Creator and Brockhampton are pretty much alternative hip hop but don't get much recognition as Alternative artists as the format is still based around rock.

I’m putting together a database which I’m tentatively calling “the 1000 Songs that mattered” where I come up with (up to) 1,000 songs for each year that are important because they: a) were a hit b) received significant critical praise (reviews, awards, etc) c) are just really good (my subjective judgment)
I’m doing this regardless of genre but everyone’s biased (including me) so I’m likely to lean more toward alternate or pop
I have slightly more than 1,000 already for 87 & 88, but I should easily be able to whittle those years down ... I have plenty of room for growth in most other years.
I’d be happy to share what I have & take suggestions for additions, but this is my list & I retain complete editorial rights
to do list: a) I’m going through all the songs in my database that don’t have a year listed & populating those, then b) I’m going to go through all of our pop, Alt & rock rankdowns to find any songs I’ve missed c) I’m going to incorporate my MTV video airplay research d) incorporate my dance chart research e) research Wikipedia’s “year in music” pages for each year f) take suggestions into consideration g) update each year moving forward
it’s been a lot of work & there’s much more ahead of me
