www.billboard.com/column/chartbeat#/news/adele-matches-titanic-s-no-1-run-atop-billboard-1005904952.storyAdele Matches 'Titanic's' No. 1 Run Atop Billboard 200by Keith Caulfield, L.A. | January 18, 2012 As expected, Adele's "21" spends its 16th week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart (104,000 sold according to Nielsen SoundScan; down 16%). Its reign is the longest since the "Titanic" soundtrack also earned 16 weeks at No. 1 in 1998. Since SoundScan's sales data began powering the Billboard 200 tally in May of 1991, "21" is one of only five sets to notch at least 16 weeks atop the list. Aside from "21" and "Titanic," the other three are: the Whitney Houston-driven soundtrack to "The Bodyguard" (20 weeks in 1992-1993), Garth Brooks' "Ropin' the Wind" (18 in 1991-1992) and Billy Ray Cyrus' "Some Gave All" had 17 in 1992. In the Billboard 200 chart's nearly 56-year history, "21" becomes only the 20th album to score at least 16 weeks at No. 1. And with 104,000 sold last week, "21" notches its 33rd week of 100,000-plus sales. The last album to do so was Usher's "Confessions," which also racked 33 stanzas of 100,000 sales in 2004-2005. At No. 2 this week is a debut from David Crowder Band with its "Give Us Rest" selling a larger-than-expected 50,000 copies. It's the best chart rank and sales week for the Christian act, who had previously gone as high as No. 11 with 2009's "Church Music" (36,000 in its debut). The recently disbanded group played its final show at the Passion 2012 conference on Jan. 2 in Atlanta. The Black Keys' "El Camino" holds at No. 3 (36,000; down 13%) while Drake's "Take Care" falls 2-4 (32,000; down 25%). Snow Patrol's "Fallen Empires" debuts at No. 5 with 31,000. It's a new peak for the band, but not its largest sales week. The latter came when "Eyes Open" moved 70,000 in a non-debut week over the busy Christmas shopping period of 2006 (when it ranked way down at No. 55). Young Jeezy's "T M:103 Hustlerz Ambition" slips 4-6 (24,000; down 33%), Rihanna's "Talk That Talk" moves 6-7 (22,000; down 20%), Coldplay's "Mylo Xyloto" descends 5-8 (20,000; down 30%). Nickelback's "Here and Now" returns to the top 10 (11-9) with 19,000 (down 18%) and the "Now 40" compilation dips 9-10 (17,000; down 28%). As the Nos. 8-10 albums all sell less than 20,000 this week -- this marks the first time in SoundScan history that it takes less than 20,000 in sales to rank among the top 10 albums of the week. Previously, the record low figure required to reach the top 10 came on the list dated June 19, 2010, when Ke$ha's "Animal" moved just a few hundred copies more than 20,000 at No. 10. In better news, over on the Digital Songs chart, Adele's "Set Fire to the Rain" hits No. 1 for the first time, jumping 3-1 with 193,000 downloads sold (down 5%). It's her third Digital Songs chart-topper, following "Rolling in the Deep" and "Someone Like You." Last week's No. 1 Digital Song, Jason Mraz's "I Won't Give Up," falls to No. 9 with 127,000 (down 44%). That's the biggest positional fall from the top since "I Need a Doctor" by Dr. Dre featuring Eminem & Skylar Gray collapsed 1-14 on the chart dated Feb. 26, 2011. Flo Rida's "Good Feeling" rises 5-2 (163,000; down 3%), Tyga's "Rack City" makes a big jump, flying 13-3 with 160,000 (up 41%) and LMFAO's "Sexy and I Know It" falls 2-4 (156,000; down 26%). The music video for "Rack City" premiered last week (Jan. 10) and has claimed over 2 million views thus far on his YouTube channel. Snoop Dogg & Wiz Khalifa's "Young, Wild & Free" (featuring Bruno Mars) climbs 8-5 (151,000; down 6%), Rihanna's "We Found Love" (featuring Calvin Harris) drops 4-6 (140,000; down 24%) and David Guetta's "Turn Me On" (featuring Nicki Minaj) blasts 21-7 with 137,000 (up 43%). The latter made a big jump on the Pop Songs airplay chart this week, zipping 27-20 in its fifth week on the tally. It's Guetta's fifth top 10 on the Digital Songs chart and Minaj's seventh. Jay-Z & Kanye West's "Ni**as In Paris" moves down one to No. 8 with 130,000 (down 20%) while Bruno Mars' "It Will Rain" holds at No. 10 with 120,000 (down 22%). Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending Jan. 15) totaled 5.10 million units, down 12% compared to the sum last week (5.80 million) and up 6% compared to the comparable sales week of 2011 (4.85 million). Year to date album sales stand at 10.90 million, up 5% compared to the same total at this point last year (10.29 million). Digital track sales this past week totaled 28.56 million downloads, down 13% compared to last week (32.77 million) and up 4% stacked next to the comparable week of 2011 (27.45 million). Year to date track sales are at 61.32 million, up 7% compared to the same total at this point last year (57.23 million). Next week's Billboard 200 competes with the same week in 2011 when: the entire top five titles were debuts, led by the Decemberists' "The King is Dead" at No. 1 with 94,000 and the "Kidz Bop 19" album at No. 2 with 70,000.

Note: First time it takes less than 20K to make the top 10 on the Billboard 200. However, even with that dubious distinction, overall album sales for the first two weeks of the year are ahead of last year. :)

Nice to see the overall sales are still ahead of last year. 33 weeks of 100k+ sales for 21, amazing! Will likely end next week though as I expect the album to sell 85-95k but still pretty awesome

I'm pretty sure she's going to clean up and she may perform as well.

Week Ending Jan. 15, 2012. Albums: Good News & Bad NewsBy Paul Grein | Chart Watch – 6 minutes ago music.yahoo.com/blogs/chart-watch/week-ending-jan-15-2012-albums-good-news-164954026.htmlThe good news this week is very good: Adele's 21 tops the 6 million mark in U.S. sales in its 48th week. It's the first album to reach 6 million that quickly since Usher's Confessions hit that plateau in its 29th week in October 2004. Five other albums that have been released since Confessions have sold 6 million or more copies, but they all took much longer to hit the 6 million mark. Taylor Swift's Fearless took 96 weeks to cross that threshold, Carrie Underwood's Some Hearts took 104 weeks, Nickelback's All The Right Reasons took 105 weeks, Kelly Clarkson's Breakaway took a little more than 3-1/2 years and Green Day's American Idiot took six years and four months. Alas, there is also bad news this week, and it's very bad: Three albums made the top 10 this week with lower sales totals than any top 10 album since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking sales for Billboard in 1991. Those albums, Coldplay's Mylo Xyloto, Nickelback's Here And Now and Now 40, sold 20K, 19K and 17K copies this week, respectively. The previous low for a top 10 album was Ke$ha's Animal, which sold 20K in June. (Nielsen SoundScan rounds off its tallies to the nearest thousand, but Ke$ha's tally that week was higher than Coldplay's is this week.) The slumping market for album sales makes Adele's achievement all the more amazing. 21 tops The Billboard 200 for the 16th week, which is the longest run since the Titanic soundtrack spent 16 consecutive weeks on top in 1998. It's the longest run for a regular studio album (excluding soundtracks) since Billy Ray Cyrus' Some Gave All logged 17 consecutive weeks at #1 in 1992. This is the longest run at #1 for an album by a female artist since Whitney Houston's The Bodyguard soundtrack logged 20 weeks on top in 1992-1993. It's the longest run for an album by a British artist since the Police's Synchronicity was #1 for 17 weeks in 1983. Adele will probably log several more weeks at #1. It's a foregone conclusion that she'll sweep the Grammys on Feb. 12. Also, "Set Fire To The Rain" may reach #1 on the Hot 100 this week, dethroning "We Found Love" by Rihanna featuring Calvin Harris. The song jumps to #1 on Hot Digital Songs this week. 21 sold 34K digital copies this week, putting it at #1 on Top Digital Albums for the 11th week. It will soon become the first album to sell 2 million digital copies. (Its tally right now stands at 1,879,000 digital copies.) Eminem's Recovery was the first album to sell 1 million digital copies. It crossed that threshold in July. David Crowder Band's Give Us Rest debuts at #2. This is the second time in three months that Adele has blocked a Christian pop or rock group from the #1 spot. In September, her album held Casting Crowns' Come To The Well to a #2 peak. Oddly, no Christian group has ever topped The Billboard 200. Casting Crowns also debuted and peaked at #2 with its 2007 album The Altar And The Door. Three other albums by Christian pop or rock groups have debuted and peaked at #2: Underoath's Define The Great Line, Skillet's Awake and Red's Until We Have Faces. It's odd that no Christian pop or rock groups have reached #1. The weekly Billboard 200 tally includes sales from Christian retail outlets, online Christian retail sites and churches, as tracked by Christian SoundScan; as well as conventional music outlets, as tracked by Nielsen SoundScan. Give Us Rest is the first top 10 album for the David Crowder Band, which first hit The Billboard 200 in 2003 with Illuminate. The highest-charting album before this for the Texas-based band was 2009's Church Music, which reached #11. The ensemble has announced that this is its final album. Snow Patrol's Fallen Empires debuts at #5. It's the Scottish group's second top 10 album. A Hundred Million Suns hit #9 in 2008. Snow Patrol is the first Scottish group to land two top 10 albums since Franz Ferdinand scored with 2005's You Could Have It So Much Better and 2009's Tonight: Franz Ferdinand. The last Scottish group to have more than two top 10 albums was Average White Band, which scored with three straight in 1975-1976: AWB, Cut The Cake and Soul Searching. Train's "Drive By," Van Halen's "Tattoo," Snow Patrol's "Called Out In The Dark" and Lana Del Rey's "Video Games" are among the songs vying to enter the Hot 100 this week. Which ones will make it? You'll find out when we post Chart Watch: Songs later today. Here's the low-down on this week's top 10 albums. 1. Adele, 21, 104,000. The album logs its 16th week at #1. This is its 47th week in the top 10. Four songs from the album are listed on Hot Digital Songs, topped by "Set Fire To The Rain," which jumps from #3 to #1. 2. David Crowder Band, Give Us Rest, 51,000. This new entry is the band's first top 10 album. 3. The Black Keys, El Camino, 36,000. The album holds at #3 in its sixth week. It has been in the top 10 the entire time. "Lonely Boy" jumps from #88 to #70 on Hot Digital Songs. 4. Drake, Take Care, 32,000. The former #1 album drops from #2 to #4 in its ninth week. It has been in the top 10 the entire time. Five songs from the album are listed on Hot Digital Songs, topped by "Headlines," which drops from #29 to #31. 5. Snow Patrol, Fallen Empires, 31,000. This new entry is the Scottish group's second top 10 album. A Hundred Million Suns hit #9 in 2008. "Called Out In The Dark" enters Hot Digital Songs at #64. 6. Young Jeezy, TM:103 Hustlerz Ambition, 24,000. The album drops from #4 to #6 in its fourth week. "I Do" (featuring Jay-Z and Andre 3000) drops from #171 to #177 on Hot Digital Songs. 7. Rihanna, Talk That Talk, 22,000. The album dips from #6 to #7 in its eighth week. This is its sixth week in the top 10. Two songs from the album are listed on Hot Digital Songs. "We Found Love" (featuring Calvin Harris) drops from #4 to #6. "You Da One" drops from #23 to #25. 8. Coldplay, Mylo Xyloto, 20,000. The former #1 album drops from #5 to #8 its 12th week. This is its eighth week in the top 10. Two songs from the album are listed on Hot Digital Songs. "Paradise" jumps from #32 to #29. "Princess Of China" (featuring Rihanna) inches up from #158 to #157. 9. Nickelback, Here And Now, 19,000. The album rebounds from #11 to #9 in its eighth week. This is its sixth week in the top 10. 10. Various Artists, Now 40, 17,000. The album dips from #9 to #10 in its ninth week. This is its seventh week in the top 10. Two albums drop out of the top 10 this week. SafetySuit's These Times plummets from #7 to #57. LMFAO's Sorry For Party Rocking drops from #8 to #11. Florence + the Machine's Ceremonials drops from #10 to #15. Yo Gotti's Live From The Kitchen debuts at #12. It's the rapper's highest-charting album to date. His previous best was his 2006 album Back 2 Da Basics, which hit #84…Rebelution's Peace Of Mind debuts at #13...Adele's 2008 album 19 drops from #13 to #16 this week. The album holds at #1 on Top Catalog Albums for the 31st week…Lady Antebellum's Own The Night drops from #12 to #17 in its 18th week. It's #1 on Top country Albums for the ninth week...The Lana Del Rey EP bows at #20. The soundtrack to Joyful Noise debuts at #21. It's the week's #1 soundtrack. The feel-good gospel-themed movie stars Dolly Parton and Queen Latifah, both of whom have had notable success with movie music. Parton topped the Hot 100 in 1981 with her title song from 9 To 5. Latifah was featured on the Chicago soundtrack, which reached #2 in 2003. Parton received an Oscar nomination for writing "9 To 5" (and for writing 2005's "Travelin' Thru" from Transamerica). Latifah was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for playing Matron Mama Morton in Chicago. Bruno Mars' Doo-Wops & Hooligans drops from #35 to #40 in its 67th week. It's doing even better in the U.K., where it returns to #1 for a second week. (It peaked at #3 in the U.S.) It's the first album by an American artist to log two weeks at #1 in the U.K. since Beyonce's 4 last July. If you're a Green Day fan, you have lots of company. The band's career album sales reach the 25 million mark this week. The band's best-selling albums are its 1994 breakthrough smash Dookie, which has sold 8,082,000 copies, and American Idiot, which has sold 6,047,000 copies since its release in 2004. The latter album features "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams," which is the only hit ever to win both a Grammy for Record of the Year and an MTV Video Music Award for Music Video Of The Year. You can read more about that in an "And The Winner Is" piece which I shamelessly plug below. (It's the second of two Shameless Plugs.) Adele's DVD Live At The Royal Albert Hall is #1 on Top Music Videos. It sold 19K copies this week, bringing its seven-week total to 494K. Contraband was #1 at the box-office over the weekend. Clinton Shorter scored the movie. Velvet Revolver had a #1 album titled Contraband in 2004. Coming Attractions: Kidz Bop Kids' Kidz Bop 21 is expected to be next week's top new entry. Also due: Attack Attack's This Means War. Shameless Plug I: Adele is nominated for six Grammys. If she wins them all, which is likely, she'll tie Beyonce's record for most Grammys won in one night by a female artist and Eric Clapton's record for most Grammys won in one night by a British artist. I wrote a blog for the "And The Winner Is" folder in which I look at everybody who has won five or more Grammys in one night. It is chock-full of Grammy lore. If you missed it, here's a link. Shameless Plug II: Who does a better job of honoring the year's best music: the Grammys or MTV's Video Music Awards? One way to find out would be to compare the winners of their top awards: the Grammy for Record of the Year and the VMA for Music Video of the Year. I did just that in another "And The Winner Is" blog. I picked my favorite in each of these showdowns for the past 28 years. I invite you to do the same. If you missed that one, here's a link.

Adele should hang on for a 17th week next week (2/4 chart). Then, these are the challengers/"big" release thereafter (per HITS).
With Nicki Mianj releasing her album that week, Adele may not return to No. 1?
2/11 chart (1/24 releases) Tim McGraw Skrillex Kellie Pickler Grammy Nominees
2/18 chart (1/31 release) Lana Del Rey (not sure how "big" this is, but...) Metallica (physical CD of EP)
2/25 chart (2/7 releases) The Fray Van Halen Paul McCartney Now 41
3/3 chart (2/14 releases; major Grammys impact week) Nicki Minaj Faith Hill

3/3 chart (2/14 releases; major Grammys impact week) Faith Hill For some reason, I fear a "Bionic" performance for Faith.

^Possible- Adele's album should see bigger sales than Faith's album (hubby Tim's last album opened to 137K). But, Nicki Minaj's should top the week, I'd think (unless it ends up below expectations- it is a brand-new album, after all, and not a deluxe edition of the first).

Why is Bruno's album still in the Top 5 in the UK? Did they re release it or something?

So Adele passes 6m this week.
Good to see Phoenix still holding on at #200!

1 27 * NIGHTWISH IMAGINAERUM 12368 999 151 12620
Where did this came from? I thought it was released before Christmas like everywhere else. (Shame on me, as they're Finnish...)

Someone has asked if 2,573 is a low for No. 200 on the BB 200. No- last fall, No. 200 was at 2,466- not sure if even that was a low.

Now if this still used the TCA chart like it did through 2009
you would find #200 a lot lower than this, many times over

^Indeed. I wouldn't be surprised if that also factored into the decision to let catalog titles appear on the BB 200 (aside from complaints that stemmed from the Michael Jackson albums not appearing after his passing).

Fully 40% of the albums ranked 101-200 are CATALOG albums! Jazz Impressionists is #11 Catalog and #102 Main James Taylor is #50 Catalog and #200 Main
Without the catalog "filler," the #200 current album would likely have sold under 2000 copies... :'(

Can someone identify this for me?
2 173 177 CARS CARS 1502 -13 1735 845036
Is this Cars - the soundtrack? or Cars the 80s pop group?

2m, I'd guess that that would be the group, The Cars. Its debut album was titled The Cars- and there was a CD reissue with bonus tracks. The album's probably priced well at Walmart or something. Plus, it would say "Soundtrack" if it were for the movie. ;)

Judging by the numbers I thought it might be the Soundtrack. Most Cars stuff was pre-soundscan, They have been on the published catalog chart 3 times (3 separate greatest hits compilations - 1 week each)
The Cars soundtrack has even been in the top 50.
845K seems high for a 70s album that hasn't charted well enough in any given week to make a published catalog chart

Note: First time it takes less than 20K to make the top 10 on the Billboard 200. However, even with that dubious distinction, overall album sales for the first two weeks of the year are ahead of last year. :) Last yrs sales gain of 1% was manipulated I read an article about that 1% gain was achieved. 14mill of the gain was due to the higher then normal discount on veteran albums. add 440k to the gaga saga

Well, catalog albums did see a sales increase last year, and they usually see robust gains with discounting. So, no "manipulation" going on there.
RE Cars- it may be a SoundScan error, neglecting to list "Soundtrack." I fouind this from a Google search, 2007:
45 DBV 155 131 196 CARS SOUNDTRACKS 4,490 -47 8,529 872,250 (Note the "s" on Soundtrack)
I imagine the DBV stands for "Disney Buena Vista." It's a higher amount than what's on the current chart.

The growing acceptance of digital as an album format was probably the biggest driver of the 2011 - 2010 increase
Catalog sales was another
