I heard Emancipation for the first time last month and was surprised by how decent it is. I'd read a lot of bad things, and after having sat through s**t like Rave I kept my expectations low and really enjoyed it. There's nothing particularly stellar on it but nothing god-awful either. I guess I can understand the disappointment following the much-publicized dispute with Warner Bros. only to come soft with f**king "Betcha by Golly Wow". It probably didn't help that it's so unnecessarily long either but I still think that some of its songs have been unjustly overlooked as a result.

I loved Musicology at the time it came out. Call My Name is such a jam!
If I had to select one song of his, I'd probably pick When Doves Cry. But he has so many fantastic songs.

Emancipation is greatly dragged by the length, especially once you factor in that the songwriting was on the decline from even a few years prior. Chaos & Disorder can be excused as a contractual obligation, but Emancipation can't be. It's just nowhere near strong enough for what it tries to do.
Rave Un2.. has some real low points, Hot Wit U in particular comes across like a bad self-parody. The remixed version, Rave In2, I'd consider to be better, but it isn't much of a victory overall.
My favorite Prince album post-The Gold Experience is most likely 3121. I'd put The Rainbow Children forward as an underrated one; it requires some getting past the lyrics, but musically I would definitely consider it a highlight of his post-peak years and would have welcome another in a similar Jazz-led musical vein rather than the instrumental projects that followed.

I really like The Rainbow Children.
Emancipation, you can make a really good 12 song album out of the 36 songs.
Rave is probably his low point.
I also enjoy Exodus with the new power generation.

In terms of collaborations, of course my favorite, despite limited, was Like a Prayer. Prince's influence is not as prominent in the album version, but the few seconds there made a big difference to me: the first guitar riff is iconic, as well as those by the end of the song. I think the guitar sound throughout the song gave an extra edge that elevated the song to the next level. Prince's contribution is better highlighted in the 7" version, which was regularly played in one of the stations back home. The last guitar section is pretty awesome youtu.be/LhPyS-nWEs8But even more telling is the extended version where Prince adds his crazy stuff for like 30 seconds, which was of course incorporated into the 7" youtu.be/QqV-mdAWrBAGreat collaboration!

It's really hard for me to think about his death, let alone write about it. Thank you Linnethia Monique for all of those reference points. I really can't believe this has happened.

I hope WB is respectful with his catalogue and doesn't just try to cash in. He would have hated that. However, I think fans will have access to some pretty amazing unreleased material and reissues in the coming months & years. That's how artists like Prince live on. No MJ style Xscape projects though. I want it how Prince intended it.

I just realized they announced a few months ago that his vinyl reissues were scheduled to start with his debut album this coming Friday.

Obsessed with "Let's Pretend We're Married" and all its 80's synth glory. The 1999 album is SICK.

www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/7341907/prince-sold-35-million-albums-songs-usPrince Has Sold Nearly 3.5 Million Albums & Songs in U.S. Since His Death4/25/2016 by Keith Caulfield Since Prince died on April 21, fans have paid tribute to the late legend by purchasing his music in huge quantities. According to Nielsen Music, Princeβs catalog of albums sold 654,000 copies in the U.S. between April 15 and April 24, while his individual songs sold 2.82 million downloads in that same span of time. In the week ending April 21, his catalog of albums sold 256,000 β up from only 5,000 the week previous. One can assume most of the 256,000 sales occurred on the final day of the tracking week, after news broke that he died around 12:55 p.m. ET, as fans rushed to digital retailers to buy his music. As for his song downloads, 1.04 million were sold in the week ending April 21 β up from only 14,000 in the week previous. Again, assume that the bulk of those million downloads were registered on the day of his death, April 21. As for the days immediately following Princeβs passing, hereβs how the sales story unfolded: On Friday, April 22, his albums sold 227,000 while his songs moved 960,000 downloads. On April 23: 113,000 albums and 521,000 songs. And on April 24: 58,000 albums and 301,000 songs. His biggest selling albums in the April 15-24 frame were The Very Best of Prince (259,000), Purple Rain (152,000) and The Hits/The B-Sides (64,000). In terms of songs, the best sellers were βPurple Rainβ (326,000), βWhen Doves Cryβ (246,000) and βLittle Red Corvetteβ (201,000). As earlier reported, The Very Best of Prince, Purple Rain and The Hits/The B-Sides re-entered the Billboard 200 albums chart dated May 7 at Nos. 1, 2 and 6, respectively. βPurple Rain,β βWhen Doves Cryβ and βLittle Red Corvetteβ were the Nos. 1, 4 and 6 best selling songs of the week ending April 21.

No MJ style Xscape projects though. I want it how Prince intended it. Warner did not rape his catalogue after their contract ended, both The Very Best of Prince + Ultimate were actual contractual obligations and not budget cash-ins. Warner also does not seem to be raping Madonna's catalogue either with pointless compilations. Prince did sign back with Warner so they were in good terms. At the very least, I expect a Purple Rain remaster but not sure if there is gonna be a Xmas season compilation like I Will Always Love You: The Best of Whitney Houston...

That Purple Rain remaster has been in the works forever and is desperately needed.

WB barely puts in the effort with most of their projects already so they probably won't go through all that unless there really is a big payout for them. On a slightly unrelated note, there really isn't a Prince greatest hits collection which includes his post 1993 material (though the number of hits since that 3 disc one were just a handful). That 3 disc one is the most definitive collection of his 80s and early 90s hits. The VBO one covers only just a few hits too. And then some of his 90s and 2000s era material is unavailable digitally and some of the physical editions are out of print.

Disclaimer : I'm not highly educated on prince
I've been made aware that his song the most beautiful girl in the world isn't on iTunes even though it was a huge hit . I was wondering if any of his other BIG hits aren't on iTunes ? Like for example something that would've likely charted in the top 15

^Only one that comes to mind is "I Hate U" which peaked at No. 12 in 1995. Was on The Gold Experience album (which TMBGITW was included on).

I felt sad watching that interview with Sheila E.
Has Sheena Easton commented? I loved SUGAR WALLS.

Yeah, that's one of the songs I know Prince for (aside from his Purple Rain) era. I thought iTunes would've had all his albums, but I'm surprised a lot of his albums are not on there. Even though some of those albums and multi disc releases from those years were just collections of previously unreleased material, those are unavailable too. Emancipation, Exodus (that was a New Power Generation release in which Prince was involved but not always the lead vocalist), Kamasutra (an entirely instrumental release featuring music played at Prince and Mayte's wedding that Prince made especially for that occasion), The Truth (an acoustic album), Crystal Ball (a collection of previously unreleased songs and a few alternate versions), The Rainbow Children, and so many others are not available. And there was that Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic album which featured a lot of artists who were huge at that time isn't either. It wasn't all that successful, but it was pretty good.
