Is it just me or does all the production on big pop songs now seem really, really basic, especially compared to mid-2000s songs like "Toxic"? There is no complexity in the arrangements and melodies. Everything is either the same repeated guitar riff or the same synths over and over again with unfinished melody lines.

Everything is either the same repeated guitar riff or the same synths over and over again with unfinished melody lines. "Toxic" was a unique track no matter where you stick it. The chords, the melody, the production. All of it was very well-done and distinct. Today, pop music is so producer-driven and each producer has found a specific type of sound that appeals to the masses, and they happen to be similar sounds, so you're going to hear a lot of similar production considering only a handful of people are making the majority of music you hear when you turn on the radio. Make sense? You're also going to see chord progressions beaten to death. Right now, we're in a time where the i-IV-I-V progression is hot. Kelly Clarkson's latest is a perfect example of that.

Madonna just said in an interview how everything on radio sounds homogenized right now- and that's so true. Especially the pop-dance, Guetta-sounding tracks and things of that nature.
"Love on Top" is faring nicely.
SFTTR should move up to No. 4 for the 2/11 airplay chart.
RiRi on five active tracks right now- gurl continues her never-ending onsluaght on the airwaves.

Madonna just said in an interview how everything on radio sounds homogenized right now- Yes and that's why Madonna has elected to release a song that makes her sound identical to Katy Perry as her first single.

^I should have left "Waits for Adonis comment* at the end of my post. Jessie J's track sound like it could be Katy Perry- that I'll give you. From what I've heard, Madge's first single does not. But, I'll let you know when I actually hear the released version. :) BTW- I gather that Nicki Minaj's "Stupid Stupid" is a "clean' version of "Stupid Hoe"? I only see it charting in Mediabase's rhythmic top 50

Imma need Columbia to send LOT to Rhythmic & Pop NOW! T4P! Yeah I'm thinking they should too. They had LOT for pop adds at once point and it seemed kinda random at the time but with the way things are going now they should just go ahead and do it, I mean it can't hurt, would only boost it overall. I'm happy Kelly is getting another hit too, I've been unsure about the second leg of her career on radio (basically post Breakaway) so it's good to see that she still has radio power. And Jessie J Slay! I still don't know what homegirl's image or sound is because every one of her songs I've mistaken as someone else (Price Tag/Natasha Bedingfield, Do It Like A Dude/Ester Dean-Rihanna, Domino/Katy Perry) and I've mistaken her for Katherine McPhee lot of times on looks...so she needs to get that together but "Domino" is hot so err, keep doing that I guess.

What are we thinking for "Set Fire to the Rain" and its total run at #1? I'm thinking 4 weeks, give or take one before Guetta and Kelly start coming close to her.

I don't get it. Rihanna has put out two incredibly catchy, radio friendly tracks after We Found Love yet neither seem to have much traction at radio compared to her other singles...let go of We Found Love already! Talk That Talk deserves to smash as well.

I see it being potentially from here on out: Adele - this week Kelly - narrowly beating Madonna because she only got 3 days of sales Madonna Kelly Kelly someone else...

Do you REALLY think Madonna could sell enough to be number one? She won't get any significant airplay so it's all sales for her.
Even Taylor Swift has never sold enough copies to be number one.

^That would bea nice surprise, but not something I'm expecting. Taylor Swift got as high as No. 2 on the strength of sales- that also could have been a more competitive time. There is no blockbuster sales single right now, so will be interesting.
If Madonna's track is released to iTunes on Friday, it could see an early debut from three days of sales. And, it may have some curiosity spins, which could result in mild airplay. I'd think it will see a higher weekly airplay peak than "Celebration" did in airplay (roughly 6.2 million BDS audience).

Yeah Taylor had Tik Tok and LTWYL as her competition, which were both massive.

I don't get it. Rihanna has put out two incredibly catchy, radio friendly tracks after We Found Love yet neither seem to have much traction at radio compared to her other singles...let go of We Found Love already! Talk That Talk deserves to smash as well. Hopefully this means she has reached her saturation point. It hasn't even gone for CHR/Pop adds yet.
