Unless there's a sales explosion from 8:30-midnight, I don't think GMAYL will be in top 10 contention this week. By the way- for the West coast, does the sales tracking then end at 9 PST?
Also- what is Tyga's airplay? The sales totaled 142,000 last week- so, that's 14,200 points there. Does the track have 30 million or so in airplay?

^Thanks. Tougher to keep track for some tracks when they're not included in the regular Mediabase updates. :)
Clarification: I see WKTU now is classified as a top 40 station via Mediabase- and it looks like it is via BDS, too. So, airplay from that station would appear in Quick-Cut info.

So will Madonna have 45 million AI, as it seems she's getting about 15 million a day? Is that correct to think that?

It hasn't been a proper dance station in years. Yeah. Even the dance songs they play now are crossover hits. Every dance song in their Top 50 made the Top 50 at CHR/Pop. They aren't nearly as current based as a Top 40 station should be though. They still have "Party Rock Anthem," "In The Dark," "Someone Like You," "Moves Like Jagger" and "Mr. Saxobeat" in their Top 10. So I guess what I'm trying to say is they've turned into a really shitty station.

NYC is arguably the world's most global city and certainly a place that's expected to lead the way musically and culturally, but we've got basically no radio stations breaking new music or being 'ahead of the curve.' A decade ago when dance music was unpopular, KTU was playing it. Now that Dance and electronic is so in, you can't really find it on NYC radio. Acts like Swedish House Mafia and deadmua5 sell out large NYC venues in minutes but there's nowhere to hear them on the radio. Very wasted business opportuity imo.

chartfreak- the audience gain tomorrow may be less than the past two days, with countdown shows interrupting the hourly play on some stations. And then the gains with Tuesday and Wednesday should be even less. But, 45m is possible by then.

I'm convinced WB was inept at promoting Madonna the past several years. This airplay reception is incredible.

^Yah- even if it was an hour-on-the-hour promo, still pretty impressive. Like the yesteryear when new Madonna singles were radio events.
With the hour-on-the-hour play done at most stations, tomorrow's gain should be interesting. maybe a couple million at most?

So, I know this is subjective, but I wonder what the response would be like if the song was actually a great tune like "Music" or "Hung Up" was. I've seen/heard a lot of people praise the performance on the SB but stay they still don't quite like the song (and I mostly agree).

Hasn't Interscope/Live Nation paid to the stations to play the song? As the deal ends the audience impressions will not increase any more if stations and listeners don't want otherwise.
It's too early to declare it as an airplay hit.

^I'm sure a lot of the airplay is basically paid for -- but even if airplay plummets after this debut week it will still probably end up at least her second-biggest airplay peak in the past ten years.
I should note that my being impressed is a combination of being impressed with the marketing muscle/money coming from the label as well as the actual airplay figures. There is a commitment to promotion here that she hasn't had in ages.

Sure, they're willing to promote this time. And also the song is better for current radio climate than American Life, Hollywood and Celebration were at the time.

As discussed in other threads- anytime an anticipated single hits, the initial airplay is not reflective of listeners liking it (as the research is not conducted until after a few weeks). So, anytime we saw big airplay debuts, it was marketing muscle, if you will. Even though Madge is not a younger act, GMAYL still was an anticipated single, with the Super Bowl tie-in and all. By the way- Z-100 in New York just played it within the last hour, so looks like airplay did not cease as soon as the hour-on-the-hour play ended.

I'm convinced WB was inept at promoting Madonna the past several years. This airplay reception is incredible. In addition to the songs that didn't fit the radio climate mentioned above, Warner slept on sending the potential hits "Sorry," "Jump," "Give It 2 Me," and "Miles Away" to radio. Honestly, "4 Minutes" is probably the least catchy song on Hard Candy.

www.billboard.com/news#/news/madonna-s-luvin-makes-super-start-at-radio-1006103752.storyMadonna's 'Luvin' ' Makes Super Start at Radioby Gary Trust, N.Y. | February 06, 2012 Madonna's new single, "Give Me All Your Luvin'," which she performed at the halftime festivities of last night's (Feb. 5) Super Bowl XLVI in Indianapolis, blasts onto multiple radio format charts. Aided by Clear Channel's promotion of the song - participating pop stations in the chain played it at the top of every hour from Friday at 9 a.m. ET until the game's kickoff last night - "Luvin'," featuring Nicki Minaj and M.I.A., soars onto Billboard's Nielsen BDS-based Pop Songs chart at No. 24 as the format's Greatest Gainer (2,766 opening-week plays). After less than three days of availability, the song registered airplay on 125 of the chart's 141 reporters. (The chart's seven-day tracking period closed, per usual, at midnight ET last night). Notably, plays on Clear Channel stations accounted for 79% of the song's first-week airplay at the format overall (2,196 of 2,766 total plays). That percentage contrasts sharply with the company's 34% share of stations that report to the chart (48 of 141). (The new No. 1 song on the ranking, for instance, Flo Rida's "Good Feeling," logged 11,879 plays; a more proportional 40% of that total stems from Clear Channel stations). "Luvin' " isn't the first occurrence of Clear Channel flexing its considerable muscle to bring new music to its listeners. On the Nov. 26, 2011, chart, Rihanna's "You Da One" stormed in at No. 26 with 2,133 first-week plays after the chain's pop stations similarly premiered it. (The Spanish Broadcasting System also recently highlighted Gloria Estefan's "Hotel Nacional," with significant airplay on the company's stations having helped spur the track's No. 1 bow on Latin Songs). In perhaps a gauge of pop airplay next week for "Luvin'," Rihanna's "One" fell by 24% in airplay - and from No. 26 to No. 30 on Pop Songs - in its second week without the assistance of Clear Channel's promotion. Still, the song eventually rebounded, rising as high as No. 19 last week. "Luvin'" previews Madonna's 12th studio album, "MDNA," due March 26. A lofty Pop Songs launch has become the norm for Madonna, who tallies her seventh top-25 debut, the most since the survey premiered the week of Oct. 3, 1992. "4 Minutes" (featuring Justin Timberlake and Timbaland), the first single from her last album, "Hard Candy," also arrived at No. 24 the week of April 5, 2008. The week of March 7, 1998, "Frozen," the lead single from Madonna's album "Ray of Light," scorched the chart at No. 16. To-date, the arrival remains one of the four highest in the chart's history. Beyond Pop Songs, "Luvin' " simultaneously starts at No. 33 on the Rhythmic airplay chart, No. 35 on Adult Pop Songs and No. 20 on Dance/Mix Show Airplay. Along with its impressive radio kickoff, "Luvin' " appears in line for a heady retail opening. As of this posting, the song shows at No. 2 on the iTunes Store's songs ranking, potentially setting up a strong debut on this week's Billboard Hot 100 chart (which measures airplay, sales and streaming). Highlights of the Hot 100, on which Madonna will make her 56th career visit with "Luvin'," will be released Wednesday (Feb. 8) on Billboard.com.

I think Madonna's first single from any of her last 3 studio abums were hyped up and got a decent amount of promo. 4min, Hung Up and even American Life felt like events. Mabey because the internet wasn't as big then the hype didn't feel as immediate?? I'd like to see how the second single is handled in the US.

In 3 days Luvin' has surpassed the airplay peaks of American Life and Hung Up at their highest points, so this is far outperforming them in airplay.
Madonna albums (except the collections) always get a big promotional push overall when they are released. But there's a kind of perfect storm of promo going on here, and this level of radio promotion is unusual for her post-"Music."

Like I said somewhere, it's not a question of GMAYL becoming a hit - her first singles always are hits - it's a question of public's reception and whether it can be turned into sales (most importantly, album sales).
Hung Up was well received and boosted COADF way past American Life's sales. Then Hard Candy failed to match COADF in spite of 4M being a big chart success. People liked it but it wasn't loved the same way the COADF era was.
So far this era seems more of a HC part 2 than COADF, Music or Ray of Light.

There's a song called Gang Bang so my hopes are not very high lol
Although, must add to the previous post that COADF was a Q4 release which usually means a better start for an album.

^And that song was done with William Orbit, so it would be one of the "dark" tracks M spoke of (Solveig collaborated on the "light" ones).
I doubt this album will scan anywhere near 1.7 million (like COADF) when all is said and done. Will it even top sales of Hard Candy? Stay tuned. :)
I'm surprised GMAYL blasted right onto the rhythmic chart- "4 Minutes" peaked at No. 28.

I think some of you are used to following artists who just coast to airplay hits with little effort. Madonna has had to scratch and crawl her way up the radio charts for a decade now. I don't know how some of you are unimpressed! How many other artists have managed this 30 years into their career? The list is pretty damn short.
