Van Halen, the Fray, Dierks Bentley & Paul McCartney: Heading for Top 10
As Grammy Awards weekend descends upon us, we're looking towards next week's Billboard 200 albums chart, where a bevy of new releases are aiming for high debuts.
Van Halen could notch its first No. 1 album since 1996 with its new "A Different Kind of Truth," however, Adele's "21" may put up a fight and stick around for a 20th week atop the tally. Industry sources say that both albums could sell around 200,000 copies by week's end on Sunday, Feb. 12 -- the same night as the 54th Grammy Awards.
Van Halen Vs. Adele For No. 1 Next Week on Billboard 200
On Nielsen SoundScan's Building chart (below), Van Halen is sitting pretty in the No. 1 position while Adele is in the runner-up slot. The Building tally is a precursor to the final Billboard 200 ranking -- reflecting the first four days (Monday through Thursday) of SoundScan's tracking week (ending Sunday, Feb. 5) as reported by six major merchants.
With the Grammy Awards on Sunday night -- and with Adele performing on the show -- she could rally with a late-in-the-game sales increase and block Van Halen from No. 1. The new Billboard 200 chart's top 10 will be revealed on the morning of Wednesday, Feb. 15.
Elsewhere on the Building chart, we have the Fray's new album, "Scars & Stories" at No. 3, the new "Now 41" compilation at No. 4 and Dierks Bentley's "Home" at No. 5. Just behind Bentley is the legendary Paul McCartney's new "Kisses on the Bottom."
The Fray may sell around 80,000, while the "Now 41" set could shift 120,000 to 140,000. Industry prognosticators suggest Bentley perhaps could sell 60,000 while McCartney is looking at 70,000.
The latter act is also performing on the Grammy Awards, which may boost him higher on the chart next week. McCartney is the 2012 MusicCares Person of the Year and will be celebrated at an all-star tribute concert on Friday, Feb. 10.
Rounding out the rest of the non-new titles in the Building Chart's top 10, we have the "2012 Grammy Nominees" compilation at No. 7, Drake's "Take Care" at No. 8, LMFAO's "Sorry for Party Rocking" at No. 9 and Lana Del Rey's "Born to Die" at No. 10.

1 NEW Van Halen "A Different Kind of Truth" 2 1 Adele "21" 3 NEW The Fray "Scars & Stories" 4 NEW Various Artists "Now 41" 5 NEW Dierks Bentley "Home" 6 NEW Paul McCartney "Kisses on the Bottom" 7 4 Various Artists "2012 Grammy Nominees" 8 6 Drake "Take Care" 9 9 LMFAO "Sorry for Party Rocking" 10 2 Lana Del Rey "Born to Die"
The Building Chart reflects the first four days (Monday through Thursday) of SoundScan's tracking week (which ends Sunday) as reported by six major merchants: iTunes, Trans World Entertainment, Best Buy, Starbucks, Target and Anderson Merchandisers. Billboard estimates that they make up about 85% of all U.S. album sales.

Who Will Get Big Grammy Sales Bumps? Adele? Civil Wars? Bruno Mars? Retailers Weigh In February 10, 2012 By Ed Christman, New York As the music industry convenes on Los Angeles for the Grammy Awards on Sunday night, merchants across America are gearing up for the sales boost that the show always brings. The only question is: Which winners and performers will see the biggest bump? At Trans World Entertainment, music buyer Mark Hudson said he expects Adele to sweep the Grammys, which will translate into a sales boost that could be enhanced even further by her performance during the show - her first since she underwent vocal-cord surgery last fall, causing the cancelation of the remainder of her North American tour. Adele's "21" album "has consistently been No. 1 recently, and I think the Grammys will put her album through the roof again," Hudson says. "The combination of the performance, comeback and the factor that there are still people who have heard about the record, but are not that familiar with it and will be exposed, will ignite sales again. We think it could triple." Who Should Win? Vote in Our 2012 Grammy Readers' Poll! Last week, according to Nielsen SoundScan, Adele scanned about 121,000, up from 116,000 the week before, and has sat atop the Billboard 200 for the past six weeks. As this week draws to a close, it remains unclear whether Adele will score her 20th (non-consecutive) week at the top of the chart, or whether it will be unseated by the new Van Halen album, "A Different Kind of Truth." As Friday was winding down, industry sales prognosticators had both albums coming in at about 200,000. It's Van Halen Vs. Adele For No. 1 on Billboard 200 Next Week An early-in-the-show and great performance by Adele could have 40,000 people going to the iTunes store Sunday night -- God forbid -- and downloading the album," says Hudson, who would rather that those people buy her album at his store. See all of our 2012 Grammys coverage right here Other sources say another thing that Adele has going for it is the Van Halen album is performing better than anticipated at some big boxes, but with some outages at stores around the country. Universal Music Group Distribution moved to replenish those stores, and with the company in moving mode on Friday to a new location, executives there didn't respond to an e-mail request for comment. While Adele will have the biggest upside, music merchants say they don't expect a sales explosion because, after all, her three albums -- "19," "21" and "Live at Royal Albert Hall" -- sold 6.7 million units last year and another 650,000 so far this year, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Meanwhile, other acts cited by merchants as being the beneficiary of sales breakout, depending on how they perform or how many awards they win, are Jason Aldean, the Civil Wars, and Bruno Mars. He says the artist that could gain a big break from the Grammys is the Civil Wars, whose album "Barton Hollow" has scanned about 285,000 units so far. "They will be in front of a lot of people who don't know them," says Hudson. "They could have a Mumford & Sons moment." Going into last year's Grammys, Mumford & Sons had scanned about 815,00 copies of the "Sigh No More" album. Sales took off again after their appearance on the show, with scans now totaling 2.1 million units. Glassnote's Daniel Glass on Mumford & Sons Grammy Noms, Indie Success and Getting Props From Drake Jason Aldean has been a consistent seller since the release of last year's "My Kinda Party," but a lot of country fans aren't familiar with him, Hudson says, even though he has four albums that have sold 6.2 million units, with his latest, "My Kinda Party," at 2.3 million units. Video: Jason Aldean and His Team Describe Their Long Road to Success at Billboard Country Summit He is performing with Kelly Clarkson, who would also get a nice pickup because she is also riding some nice press after her strong performance of the national anthem at the Super Bowl. In California, Super D music buyer Craig Swedin says, "I think Jason Aldean and Bruno Mars could be the breakout acts, and obviously the Civil Wars, if they give a kick-ass performance." Of course, Super D has a vested interest in the Civil Wars as their physical distributor. "They been selling well along," but this will get them in front of a bigger audience, Swedin notes. Other names mentioned by the two buyers that might experience a pop include Taylor Swift, Foster the People, Glen Campbell, Blake Shelton, and Maroon 5. No matter what happens, Hudson says he expects the show to boost sales for the industry. "We think it will be an exciting show," he says. "It's a nice mix of performers." ^^This doesnt make any kind of sense. The Fray (at #3) may sell 80,000...while Now 41 (at #4) may sell 120-140,000? And Bentley (at #5) may sell 60,000...while McCartney (at #6) may sell 70,000???

For one, predictions aren't always for right.
Also, newly released studio albums tend to be more frontloaded and don't sell as much on the weekend. Country albums are more consistent sellers (I think compilation albums are too.)
Paul McCartney will be performing at the Grammy's, so maybe they expect him to surge on Sunday?

The sales for Adele are already growing in anticipation of the Grammy awards. She is a high profile interview on 60 Minutes Sunday night with Anderson Cooper - lots of those clips are online. She's on the new cover for People magazine which hit newstands the past 1-2 days. Even in the past few hours the singles have climbed up the iTunes rankings. Will it be enough? We'll see!

www.billboard.com/#/news/whitney-houston-poised-to-re-enter-billboard-1006171752.storyWhitney Houston Poised to Re-Enter Billboard 200's Top 10Whitney Houston's "Whitney: The Greatest Hits" album could re-enter the Billboard 200 chart's top 10 this week, based on early sales projections. Though Nielsen SoundScan's sales tracking week ends at the close of business tonight (Feb. 12), sources suggest that the album could sell over 50,000 copies in the day-and-a-half after her passing on Feb. 11. That sum would enable the set to re-enter the top 20 of the chart easily -- if not the top 10.

Billboard is reporting that Whitney: The Greatest Hits may re-enter the Billboard 200 in the Top 10 with a possible 50k in sales.

Incredible sales. I see her at #2 behind Adele next week with a full week's sales.

The Greatest Hits initially peaked at No. 5, so it may eventually reach a new peak. It peaked at No. 1 in the UK (though both discs were the original versions, and it didn't have the remixes in place of some of the original uptempo numbers).

www.hitsdailydouble.com/news/rumormill.cgiAdele keeps on "Rolling."ADELE CONTINUES HER REIGN: Thanks to her stunning Grammy haul last night, and show-stopping performance of "Rolling in the Deep," look for Adele's XL/Columbia album, 21, to spend its 20th week at #1 tomorrow, with sales that should top 225k (including 47k at iTunes alone last night). Ironically, she now ties the mark of Whitney Houston's The Bodyguard soundtrack set in 1993. (2/13p)

Between the timing of the Grammys, the fact Adele is smashing every bit as hard as Whitney did early in her career (who was the same age when her 1st album hit), has the same depth in her voice etc etc..just across the board weird similiarities

I dont get people- why does someone need to "die" to make you buy their album/appreciate their music. wtf? I always equally thought Whitney was a great singer- but am not going to buy her music more or less because she died.

I always equally thought Whitney was a great singer- but am not going to buy her music more or less because she died. There are many reasons why the sales for an artist like Whitney explode immediately posthumously. I suspect most of the people buying Whitney's albums are those already acquainted with her music but do not have complete collections or never bothered to buy some albums. Also, many casual fans who didn't purchased her albums in the past (especially younger fans who didn't exactly "grow up" with her) will purchase the classic albums or the greatest hits collections. There are also people who unfortunately don't really "discover" an artist until they die.

Whitney and MJ both had tragic deaths. I mean, it's not a competition whose death was more tragic or more shocking. No one should lose their life as young as they both were and when you think about Whitney's 18 year old daughter, and MJ's 3 children it is gut wrentching. They were both the prumary caretakers for their children. Ugh.
