The 1987 classic from Whitney Houston. Probably the first Whitney Houston song I ever heard when I was a kid. R.I.P. Whitney, your legacy will live on.

Except it was actually 1987. ;)
I've always preferred "How Will I Know" as far as her big uptempo hits go, but this is an undisputed pop classic.

Love this, but I prefer "How Will I Know" and "So Emotional".

This is one of my favorite uptempos. I always preferred the Junior Vasquez mix on her Greatest Hits album and the Happy Handbag mix from 1996. www.youtube.com/watch?v=yCJE1wdjSnM

I think that when it comes to Whitney's songs, after she died, people act like this, "Greatest Love of All", and "I Will Always Love You" are her only songs.

This is a huge classic. I mean a HUGE classic. It's an office party staple and pops up in many situations. I'd put this as her second most well known song.
I like it in small doses, it's definitely fun.

On YouTube/VEVO it's her 6th more watched video. On Spotify, though, it's actually her most streamed song (even over "IWALY").

It was around the mid-00s that I remember this really cementing out a solid nostalgic place for itself, and since then it has stayed pretty consistent. As far as uptempos from singers of her generation that are moreso regarded as balladeers go, I'd also say that this is the most well known aside from AIWFCIY which gets a resurgence every year. I hear more Mariah uptempos than Whitney uptempos overall, but if I was to condense it to the songs themselves, this specific one pops up the most.

Over the years I'm growing fonder and fonder of this. Def agree that it's her most popular song behind IWALY.
That video is really cute and blonde Whitney looked so gorgeous!

Yeah, it's been strange watching this become her signature song over the years. To us old heads, it's probably something different, but the youngins know this song way better than anything else by her. I hear it at clubs, weddings, parties, etc. all the damn time. And it never fails to get everyone singing along and right on to the dance floor. Even people that weren't close to being alive when it came out.
I mean, it's just an amazing song. You can't be in a bad mood listening to this. My fav part is the "Don'tcha wanna dance" breakdown at the end.

I remember reading that the original version (i.e. the submitted demo) of this song was much slower, and then Narada turned it into an uptempo before it was recorded.

I think it was always a dance song, but the demo apparently had more of a country feel. What's interesting to me is the same duo that wrote this song had written "How Will I Know." They were asked to write another song for Whitney, and the first one they submitted was "Waiting For A Star To Fall." It was rejected, and they recorded it and had their own top 10 with it. I love that song! Lol.

Good song but WAY overplayed! I get burned out by it because of that factor. Always heard this on the AC stations (100.3 FM and Lite FM 93.9) when I was younger. I much prefer "So Emotional" over this one as it is not as overplayed.
