I'm old enough to remember when MC Hammer's "U Can't Touch This" debuted at #27 and we all freaked out!! In retrospect, it was the beginning of labels doing crazy things (repressing) with singles. I remembr that! And I seem to remember Madonna's "Rescue Me" had a huge debut too, somewhere in the teens if I recall. What songs debuted in the top 10 prior to 1995? There can't be that many. I know "Let It Be" was one. Previous to "Let It Be" in 1970, the Beatles actually are the only artists to debut in the top 10 on the Hot 100. In fact, they did it twice, tying their own record. Both "Hey Jude" in 1968 and "Get Back" in 1969 both debuted at #10 on the Hot 100, the highest debuts for any singles up until that time. Then of course they broke their own record with "Let It Be." Between 1970 and 1995 there were no debuts higher than LIB or in the top 10 at all until the aforementioned "Scream" by Michael and Janet Jackson debuted at #5 in 1995.
