Wow, this show could be dubbed "The Reverse-Course Show", since nearly every song that was moving up last week comes back down this week. Conversely, most songs that moved down last week goes back up.
We'll start with last week's debut songs, which this week are all near the bottom of the chart. Toby Mack's "Gone", which I'm sure I've heard before, probably on Pop stations, debuted last week at #18, but this week moves down to 20. And last week's highest debut, "He Will Carry Me" by Mark Schultz, which came in at #15, fell back to 18 this week. The other debut last week is one of the exceptions to the norm on this week's chart, as it holds steady at #19. We'll see how they do next week.
The reverse-course theme applies to song #17, "The Space In Between Us" by Building 429, but they're used to that, as the song has been going up and down pretty much ever since it debuted back in October.
Two songs re-enter the countdown this week (when Jon said that, I was thinking that Natalie Grant would return. However, that was not to be, as they're both songs that dropped out during the last week of December with a regular chart. But this week, the songs, both sixteen-week members to the chart, come back at #16 ("Alive In Love" by The Swift) and #15 ("King" by Tree63). When I heard Jon mention Tree63, I figured that "Blessed Be Your Name" was re-entering again (it did so back in late October and again on the last week in December), but instead, it was their newer song "King". It's at number fifteen, but, with all the recurrent airplay for "Blessed Be Your Name", it probably won't go much further.
As for this week's droppers, one song, "Disappear" by Bebo Norman, does just that after moving up two to number sixteen last week. Bethany Dillon's "All I Need", however, was moving down last week (12 to 20) and this week, she obviously moves down at least one more spot, because she drops out of the survey.
At number 14 is another song that defies the norm this week. "Healing Rain" by Michael W. Smith fell 10-14 last week and, even though it's not moving back up, it doesn't continue its trip down. Instead, it holds steady.
Point Of Grace enjoyed one week in the Top Ten last week, but, since they moved up last week, that means they have to come back down this week. And they move down four to number thirteen.
Given the theme this week, you'd guess that an older song is this week's biggest mover, and you are indeed correct. In fact, it's the oldest song on the survey. "Much Of You" by Jeremy Camp, which has been on the chart since early June, moves up five spaces to number 12. But that doesn't necessarily mean that he'll break the longevity record. In fact, given what happened to his last hit, I wouldn't be surprised to see "Walk By Faith" gone by next week (back on the last weekend in May, "Right Here" moved 10-6 and then it just mysteriously disappeared, never to be seen again).
Another exception to this week's theme is one of two songs with upward movement both last week and this week. "You Are Mine" by Third Day moved 14-13 last week and continues its climb, up two more to #11. Looks like another Top Ten for Third Day.
Kicking off the Top Ten is last week's biggest mover. "Much Of You" vaulted eight strong spots to #8 last week and this week, it drops back to #10.
At number nine is a song that I'm surprised didn't move up two spots. For the last six or so weeks of 2004, this song seemed to call the number eight position home, but last week, it fell to #10 and this week, they try to return to their home spot on the chart, but fall a spot short.
Instead, one of two songs that fell eight spots last week regains half of those positions and moves back up four to number eight.
Monk & Neagle entered the Top Five last week, but fall back two spots this week to #7.
Like the latest by Building 429, Salvador's remake of the Pop smash by Los Lonely Boys, is very used to bouncing around on the chart. Pretty much ever since its debut in November, if the song was moving up one week, it was back down the next week. They made the biggest move I've ever seen in the Top Ten on the 20: Countdown chart last week (9-2), but this week, plunge back to #6. If the trend continues, they'll be back up next week.
Phillips Craig & Dean "You Are God Alone" keeps up with the norm this week and, after falling from number five to seven last week, they move right back up to number five.
MercyMe, however, defies this week's trend and continues its climb, moving 6-4. I have a feeling the song will be taking over the top in the near future.
As the numbers get smaller, so do the turnabouts on the chart. "Presence" by the Newsboys and "Indescribable" by Chris Tomlin, numbers three and two, respectively, both dropped a spot last week and they regain a spot this week.
Only one song stayed put on last week's chart and this week, it does the same. "Voice Of Truth" by Casting Crowns stays at number one for an eighth week (even though Jon Rivers said it was the fifth week. Apparently, he doesn't count the three weeks that there was no regular chart printed, but I do).
And that pretty much says it all for this week's chart. I have a feeling that next week's survey could be another reverse course week, since the upward movement this week could be coming from the year-end countdowns on Christian stations (since the big number ones seem to be the biggest movers this week). We'll have to see what happens next week.
