Didn't Bieber recently have 2 top 5 albums? Yes. But they weren't two top four albums. Ha -- I didn't even catch that. I think this is the first time I've ever seen a reference to the "top four" as a noteworthy achievement.

I am impressed by the Civil Wars as well. They ended up making the top ten, just ahead of where HITS predicted. Very cool to see an abbreviated performance have this kind of impact for them.

Well...it is Adele, lol. One more achievement they can cram into an article to make her spectacular run seem all the more spectacular.

Chart date 3/11/2000 583,000 Full top10 if anyone is curious: 01 583,071 SUPERNATURAL Santana 02 176,576 2001 Dr Dre 03 132,743 CHRISTINA AGUILERA Christina Aguilera 04 130,232 DEVIL WITHOUT A CAUSE Kid Rock 05 128,615 EUROPOP Eiffel 65 06 123,572 ON HOW LIFE IS Macy Gray 07 121,779 ALL THE WAY...A DECADE OF SONG Celine Dion 08 115,235 FLY Dixie Chicks 09 113,466 GRAMMY NOMINEES 2000 Various 10 111,078 AND THEN THERE WAS X DMX Thanks. This really puts things in perspective. So the big story a la Adele sold LESS than Adele, but most of the albums in the bottom half of the Top 10 2012 sold only about a third of their respective positions in 2000. Whitney is the only other album to cross 100k in 2012, but all Top 10 albums (and likely some in the teens) sold above 100k in 2000. Imagine if '21' came out in 2000.

If '21' came out in 2000 it might not even be a hit at all. The sales levels are not just about Adele put out an album. It is about Adele put out an album that struck a chord with people at the exact time they were ready for that sound.
Adele's sound may not have struck the same chord in 2000

If 21 had been released pre-download era, this thing would be in the 14-15million range!!!

My comparison was about the sales climate in 2000 rather than the musical scene. ;)

I'm pretty sure the people buying 21 are the ones that usually download music illegally, but 21 struck a chord with them that made them want to buy it. I don't think it would have been selling this much compared to other albums if released then.

And, I know this is a factor mainly outside the US, but it's not on Spotify or other streaming outlets AFAIK.

Whitney Houston Has No. 2 Album, Grammys Push Big Gains on Billboard 200 by Keith Caulfield, L.A. | February 22, 2012 11:00 EST LinkAs earlier reported, Adele's "21" spends a 21st nonconsecutive week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, selling 730,000 (up 207%) in the week after the Feb. 12 Grammy Awards. The diva also moves up five slots to No. 4 on the tally with her first album, "19," which sold 87,000 last week (up 144%). BRIT Awards 2012: Adele, Ed Sheeran, Coldplay Win Big Whitney Houston's "Whitney: the Greatest Hits," climbs from No. 6 to No. 2 in the first full week after the singer's death on Feb. 11. The album sold 175,000 for a 174% gain. It's the best sales week (and highest charting position) for the set, which was first released in 2000. Its previous high came in its debut frame, when it started at No. 5 with 158,000 on the chart dated June 3, 2000. Houston has a total of seven albums on the chart this week: "Whitney Houston" (72-37 with 17,000; up 113%), "The Bodyguard" soundtrack (80-38 with 17,000; up 123%), "I Look To You" (118-65 with 9,000; up 81%), "Whitney" (122-87 with 7,000; up 46%), "The Preacher's Wife" soundtrack (183-90 with 7,000; up 46%) and "My Love Is Your Love" (a re-entry at No. 193 with 4,000; up 96%). For the latter, this is the album's best sales week and marks a new peak position. The "Now 41" set holds at No. 3 (94,000; down 33%) while the "2012 Grammy Nominees" album rises 8-5 with 85,000 (up 66%). Outside the top 10 we see big Grammy-fueled gains from Grammy performers/nominees Coldplay, Rihanna, the Band Perry, Foo Fighters, Mumford & Sons, Taylor Swift, Bon Iver and Skrillex -- and that's just the tip of the iceberg. Coldplay's "Mylo Xyloto" moves 14-11 (35,000; up 26%), Rihanna's "Talk That Talk" rises 18-17 (26,000; up 11%) and the Band Perry's self-titled set kicks 24-19 (24,000; up 22%). Skrillex, Diplo & A-Trak: The Billboard Cover Story Over on the Digital Songs chart, Katy Perry's "Part of Me" makes its expected No. 1 debut, selling 411,000 downloads in its first week. It's the biggest sales week for a song since one year ago (chart dated March 5, 2011), when Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" was No. 1 with 509,000 in its first full week of release, and Cee Lo Green's "F**k You (Forget You)" was No. 2 with 412,000. Aside from Perry, there are two more debuts in the top 10 this week. Nicki Minaj's "Starships" sails in at No. 7 with 204,000, while Chris Brown's "Turn Up the Music" motors in at No. 9 with 180,000. Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending Feb. 19) totaled 7.72 million units, up 13% compared to the sum last week (6.83 million) and up 7% compared to the comparable sales week of 2011 (7.18 million). Year to date album sales stand at 41.70 million, up 4% compared to the same total at this point last year (39.95 million). Year to date track sales are at 202.78 million, up 7% compared to the same total at this point last year (188.69 million). Next week's Billboard 200 competes with the same week in 2011 when: Adele's "21" debuted at No. 1 with 352,000. Justin Bieber's "Never Say Never: the Remixes," fell 2-1 with 102,000 (down 38%).

if The Civil Wars had a full length performance I guess the sales could be higher and maybe become this year's Mumford & Sons. I wish they got nominated for Best New Artist as well but hey they already won 2 Grammys anyway And Adele, I won't get tired of saying WOW

Interesting to note that Someone Like You is on Now 41 and Rolling In The Deep is on the Grammy compilation album, meaning that Adele is featured on 4 of the top 5 albums this week.

"featured" is the wrong word. "appears on" is better

Over 7 million copies in 1 year. I just can't believe it. Do you want to know something truly beautiful? This could pass 10 million copies before Confessions (which is to this day about 40k away) actually does.

I think Usher will top 10 million for Confessions soon, as he's about to be all over the media soon promoting a new album. 40k off is not far at all.

^ It's selling 2,000 copies in typical weeks. 21 can quite possibly keep up with the 135,000 a week it would have to sell to "win."

I can't believe how many crazy coincidences and comparisons there are between Adele and Whitney, including the whole timing of The Bodyguard being overtaken and the video sales.

21 is only the fourth album in the history of The Billboard 200 to spend its first 52 weeks inside the top 10. Fleetwood Mac's Rumours spent its first 52 weeks in the top 10 in 1977-1978. Bruce Springsteen's Born In The U.S.A. spent its first 84 weeks in the top 10 from 1984 into 1986. Celine Dion's Falling Into You spent its first 59 weeks in the top 10 in 1996-1997.
Adele will eaisly pass both Fleet & Celine. It is def fpossible to pass Bruce, but it is a tad possible she wont, but not likley.

I wonder if she can manage to pass Alanis for most weeks in the top 10 in the Soundscan era. She had 72 weeks I believe.
I wouldn't be surprised if she does, to be honest. Her chart performance keeps surpassing our expectations.

Her chart performance keeps surpassing our expectations. It seems very likely she will. Just had her best sales week. Three songs in the top ten. Only three singles in. Has a guaranteed hit with Rumour. I would bank on it.

The biggest album sellers in 2000 were mainly teen pop acts (Britney and the boy bands) and acts all over MTV, like Eminem. And nu-metal, like Limp Bizkit It's not like Adele has much in common with Lady Gaga, Eminem, Justin Bieber, Ke$ha, etc. I agree it *may* not have hit as big in a different time but it's not like 21 fits right in with the popular sounds of 2010/2011/2012.
