As many of you know, for the first time ever, R&R published a full Top 100 chart for the Christian AC format in 2004 (before, like the other Christian formats, they only did a Top 25 of the year).
However, many people were disappointed that the Top 100 chart contained a whole slew of recurrent songs. Most of them were holdovers from 2003, but there were a few songs that were several years old, including "God Of Wonders" by City On A Hill, from 2000, and "I Could Sing Of Your Love Forever" by SonicFlood, which was released in 1999. Like many people, I didn't think a song from the last century belonged on a 2004 chart, so what I did over the weekend was made a chart, removing the nineteen recurrent songs and, to fill in the void left, I ranked the nineteen biggest songs that did chart in 2004 but failed to make the chart. Now, these are just rough estimations and nothing more; I wasn't able to add the total number of spins, since, once the songs fell off the chart, I had no idea how many spins they received. So, I just went with weeks on the chart, peak, as well as weeks on the New & Active list.
Mind you; I didn't remove ALL holdovers from 2003. Using R&R's general rule that a song has to be on the chart for at least one week within the chart year, I removed all songs that had fallen off the chart before the chart year started on December 5, 2003. There are a few songs that were only on the chart for a few weeks after that date, but if the song wasn't on the chart at all during the 2004 chart year, it ain't here.
Anyway, here is the list I came up with:

And that's the list. I know that the bottom part isn't totally accurate, and quite frankly, I question the accuracy of the rest of the chart. How is it possible that Scott Riggan's "I Love You Lord", which squeaked onto the chart for one week back in late January, managed to chart around the halfway point of the chart while "Ready To Fly", a song that had been high on the chart at the beginning of the chart year and had received pretty decent recurrent play, barely make the year end chart (R&R's version, that is). But at least, here we have a chart that consists solely of 2004 songs, without any old songs that were fueled exclusively by recurrent airplay.
With the installation of the recurrent rule about halfway through the year, I think we can count on seeing even more recurrents on the 2005 year end chart, many of those songs that would still be hanging around without the recurrent rule. "Blessed Be Your Name" by Tree63 is bound to be riding high on the 2005 chart, especially since "King" isn't quite outperforming it in radio airplay. And other songs like "Who Am I" and "Glory Defined" I'm sure we'll see on the charts, along with older songs like "I Can Only Imagine" and "He Reigns".
But at least you can rely on me to post a recurrent-less year end chart at that time, right? :)
