Pop radio (radio in general) didn't really start playing WAY, though, until after the post-Super-Bowl-ad boost.
For reference, Gotye's current audience from Mediabase rolling charts:
Alternative: 9.978m (No. 1 in spins and audience) Hot AC: 9.743m (No. 20, No. 19 audience) Triple A: 2.437m (No. 1 in spins and audience) Pop: 2.803m (No. 50 in spins, No. 47 in audience)
Highly impressive that the track has sold so well with such little top 40 exposure. Anything else that's propelled it?

I don't get it. The songs that are coming out of nowhere right now seem so BORING to me. This one and Gotye, I just don't get the hype, at all. Agreed. Yet songs like Disaster or Princess of China seem to struggle. I think that's where we differ. As many times as I've listened to the Coldplay/Rihanna track, I still don't remember what it sounds like. I think I've reached a point where all of these samey-sounding songs have finally blended together so something different, like the fun and Gotye tracks, catching on is a welcome sight for me. Don't get me wrong, I've loved pop music for the last 3 or 4 years but even I'm starting to get bored of the same styles and same artists dominating over and over.

"Somebody that I Used to Know" is a song that people connected to maybe because of the lyrics. It's the type of song where the lyrics will get your attention heck the title itself is intriguing enough. I guess people can relate with songs like this and well the theme of romantic relationships. especially a failed one, will always hit a chord. Admittedly, I don't know who Gotye and Kimbra were before this song but it's always refreshing to see something "new" pop up in the charts and it's not like everyday we get those obscure acts of that type charting well. And there has always been songs from smaller acts that out of nowhere just become hits and most of the time it's just one time thing or will it take a long time before they find another hit song.

I like both the fun. and Gotye songs, but I don't know that I necessarily want to see either of them flogged to death or turning into go-to karaoke songs (not that I get any choice in the matter). And I'm sure radio's under its own pressures to go with the proven product, even if it's long past the point where anyone is downloading it anymore.
But it does seem that while the sales charts have become hyperdemocratic with digital downloads, radio has gone hyperconservative-bordering-on-reactionary, literally cycling through the same eight to ten "approved" songs with only the very occasional dip into the catalog or something up-and-coming. Maybe it works for their model in the portable music player era; I don't know from their experience (and I pretty much listen to my MP3 player anyway). But their decisions are what is reflected in the charts.
Anyway, another week when the top 3 is shaping up to be unpredictable. WAY has a huge sales lead now, but it looks like it will need to sell about 100K more than Kelly (both versions) to take #1. And Adele's still somewhat in the mix, though I had expected a closer race with WDKY last week.

Radio does end up with a lot of pressure due to the large generation that isn't digital savvy. Many people I know who are part of iPod generation listen to their iPods and such in the car and don't tune into the radio as much as those who don't follow whats hot digitally. My mom listens to the radio all of the time (her job requires a lot of driving) and she always gets very frustrated when something new/unfamiliar to her is played that isn't 3+ months old. And I know that there are likely many more people like her.

When a song like Princess of China isn struggling, that's when you know radio stations are f**ked up with their playlists... Or maybe stations just do not have any more room for ANOTHER track that features Rihanna. They already play 4 or 5 songs an hour that she features or is solo on. Enough already.

"Princess of China" is nothing special at all, IMO. I don't get the hype for it or that Gotye track.
However, "We Are Young" is freaking amazing!

It's the type of song where the lyrics will get your attention heck the title itself is intriguing enough. I guess people can relate with songs like this and well the theme of romantic relationships. especially a failed one, will always hit a chord. I think this is very very close to being 100% false. The lyrics means close to NOTHING to the succes of this song. This song could be sung in chinese and it would still have been a hit with the proper exposure. This song is massive everywhere, not just in countries that master the english language. Generally speaking, lyrics mean precious little to the chart prospects of a song. Just take a look at the charts if you don't believe me. It's not a coincidence that most lyrics to chart hits are written as an afterthought these days. For most chart hits, a producer comes up with a top notch backing track, a topline writer adds a melody and THEN someone writes the lyrics which basically shouldn't offend anyone (unless it does so playfully, being deliberately "controversial") and generally be about regular stuff like love and partying. Shouldn't take a skilled writer more than 15 minutes. Sure there is music out there with deep and meaningful lyrical content, but those songs very rarely bother the charts - not because the lyrics scare people off, so much as that the production side of things usually aren't the focus. Current production and a short catchy melody is what makes the vast majority of chart hits. The Gotye track hits home because it's a very catchy and unusual track that people remember instantly. In other words, it's got the ingredients of a proper chart record, without actually sounding like anything else in the charts, hence appearing very cool and hip. Therein lies its genius.

I'm somewhat afraid to ask, but does anyone have the audience numbers for "Girl Gone Wild?" Wasn't it just released last night? If so, there's a good chance it doesn't have any today, especially since it was nowhere near as hyped as GMAYL.

BC can actually be Rihanna's 12th #1 if IDJ waits a little longer to officially release it digitally.

BC can actually be Rihanna's 12th #1 if IDJ waits a little longer to officially release it digitally. I agree just let it build in airplay and get as high as lets say "The Motto" is currently is..75M, (maybe even higher since I think it will go straight to the top on Urban and Rhytmic and may even break some records) and boom release it and it would probably race to the top especially with an extended solo version . This could be a shoe-in for the top spot if they played their cards right.

BC can actually be Rihanna's 12th #1 if IDJ waits a little longer to officially release it digitally. I don't think BC would sell enough to threaten for #1, even if it has been repressed for a few weeks now. It having little pop support atm also doesn't help. Top 10 is pretty much a given, though.

I'm thinking that the curiosity factor, multiple versions, and 2 big names in music attached should be enough to overcome the lack of POP support for debut sales week.

When I was at the gym yesterday, a local top 40 station played SFTTR and then less than an hour later, RHI- and then SFTTR again before I left. There is no escaping Ms. Adkins.
