I heard this song on the March 4, 1972 rebroadcast on AT40: The 70's. Do you remember Melanie's version of The Nickel Song from 1972? Was it a remake of some other artist's song?

But who first sung "The Nickel Song" before Melanie did herself?

But who first sung "The Nickel Song" before Melanie did herself? Nobody. The New Seekers also had a popular version of it, but Melanie did her version before they did theirs.

Well, on the March 4, 1972 rebroadcast on the recent AT40: The 70's broadcast Casey mentioned "The Nickel Song" was one of 5 remakes on the AT40 chart for that March 4, 1972 week.

Must have been an error. General timeline: *February 1971 (1 February 1971 is the exact date I see quoted most often): Melanie releases her album The Good Book, which contains this song. *19 March 1971 - The New Seekers release a version of the song as a single. (This release date is on various official sites, but the Billboard Hot 100 chart entry date is 20 March 1971, so it may have been out slightly earlier in the U.S. and that may be the UK single release date.) *Later in 1971 (cannot find exact date) - Melanie releases her original version as a single. *22 January 1972 - chart date when Melanie's single enters the Hot 100.
