This weekend's edition of 20: The Countdown Magazine featured the Top 20 songs of Steven Curtis Chapman - so far. Of course, Mr. Chapman has had more hits than 20 - many more. But they honed it down to 20 and here is the list:
1) Much Of You
2) Dive
3) Live Out Loud
4) God Is God
5) Let Us Pray
6) Fingerprints Of God
7) Speechless
8) I Will Be Here
9) Not Home Yet
10) Magnificent Obsession
11) More To This Life
12) Moment Made For Worshipping
13) All Things New
14) All About Love
15) For The Sake Of The Call
16) His Strength Is Perfect
17) The Great Adventure
18) Great Expectations
19) With Hope
20) Weak Days
My only complaint about this chart is the number one song. How can "Much Of You" be the top song by Steven Curtis Chapman when it hasn't even hit number one (and probably will not)? Unless this chart is based on airplay during a given week because other than that, there's no logic to that song being number one. I figured that "The Great Adventure" would probably be number one, seeing as it was the top song of the 1990s, according to the "20: The Countdown Magazine: 90s In Review" countdown that they ran several times during the first few years of the new millennium. Other songs that I thought possible to be number one included "Great Expectations", which was the top song of 2002, "Live Out Loud", which ruled the roost for 2001, and "Dive", 1999's winner. Don't get me wrong; I like "Much Of You", but I didn't think it would be number one.
I was pleasantly surprised that "I Will Be Here" was on the countdown, basically, because I had no idea that Steven Curtis Chapman was the singer. Didn't someone else chart at Christian AC with that song, because I seem to remember it on a compilation CD, and I don't think the artist was Steven Curtis Chapman and this version sounded a tad different. Anyway, I remember hearing that song back in March, 2001 during one of my leisurely drives that I took back then. I had just started taking those, so I was happening upon towns that I'd never heard of, much less been in. So the song takes me back to those days and I like it a lot.
There were other Steven Curtis Chapman songs that I don't remember hearing, including the song that kicked off the countdown, his first hit from 1987 called "Weekdays". Most of his early stuff I didn't recognize because Christian AC radio doesn't seem to play those anymore. Usually they play stuff from this decade and the late 1990s (like "Dive" and "Fingerprints of God"). They don't even play "The Great Adventure" much, if at all, even though it was the top song of the 1990s but, seeing that it's from 1992, it's probably too old.
Well, as soon as the regular weekly chart is posted on the 20: Countdown website, I'll post it, only in a different topic. I like to keep the chart at the top of the page because I print them out for year-end countdown purposes. That's why I entitled this one "Best of SCC" instead of with the date it was run, since it could (and probably will) be repeated someday. But its original broadcast date was March 19, 2005.
