Artist Spotlight: Chris Tomlin
Jon's Future Favorite:
To my disappointment, Jon has started another Past & Present feature, this time focusing on the Newsboys, as a promotion to their latest album Devotion, as well as Shine: The Hits, and I have a feeling this is going to last through April. While these features would be neat on occasion, I don't really like having them week after week. Or they could have them as well as the Jon's Future Favorite. All they'd have to do would be to cut the second verse out of a song or two a la Casey Kasem. Songs that would be ideal to chop down are songs that have been on the chart forever and a day. It wouldn't make me mad not to hear the entire version of "Heaven" by Salvador (since I've been hearing that song in one form or the other for about a year now!).
Anyway, here are the two songs they played by the Newsboys.
Past: Shine
Present: Orphan
As for my commentary on the chart, well, there were a few surprises. Two big drops and two big moves by the same artist as the droppers which I guess seems logical. As people tire of the artist's older hit and start listening to the newer one, the old song tends to fall faster than a hocker off the John Hancock building. The first big drop was the song that kicked off the countdown, "Presence (My Heart's Desire)" by the Newsboys. They fall from well up inside the Top Ten last week (#8) to #20. Their new song moves up at least six spots to debut on the 20: Countown chart with the title track from their latest album. And Chris Tomlin falls 7-18 with the oldest song on the survey, "Indescribable" (been on since late summer) as he makes the biggest move within the Top 20, moving 12-4 with a great song, "Holy Is The Lord". Hmmm, why do I have a feeling that'll be the next number one song after Jeremy Camp is done at the top?
Speaking of Jeremy Camp, he spends a third week on top, and, with the help of Casting Crowns, keeps MercyMe at bay for another week. I think they'll have to settle on a number two peak with "Homesick". Would this be the first time they've ever missed the top spot?
