Wow, it's embarrassing looking at the United Kingdom's digital chart right now (and they're not alone in this, for sure).
Approximately two in five entries in the Top 75 are catalog songs. And given they determine chart rank entirely by digital sales (as opposed to allocating placement on a mix of digital sales, radio play, streaming and other factors)..........you might as well be listening to Jack FM for all I care.
THIS is why it is misguided calling for the United States and other countries to follow suit in adopting a 100% digital template is misguided. It renders the charts irrelevant in that fewer up-and-coming acts get visibility and the nostalgia bin is lumped together hopelessly with the New Releases bin.

NEWSFLASH: not all charts have to include airplay! I agree, as with most here, that certain aspects of radio, including front-loaded first-week arrangements by Live Nation and Clear Channel, should be deemed ineligible in chart calculation. However, I consider radio a necessary barometer in chart composition. Even with the manipulation of charts by labels (which I'm not denying and must be considered with a sharp eye) spoiling aspects of it, radio remains a key weather vane of sorts in gauging what is popular in a current context, even if digital sales tend to determine the fate of many releases these days. A mix, a balance, is important. At least in my view. Why keep publishing charts if you can already foresee, every single time a contestant performs a catalog song or two on "The X Factor", that each respective song performed is going to make the chart, while a dynasty of current hits retain their grip at the summit? It's a losing proposition for most up-and-coming acts, and who wins most of all are those who tune in to nostalgic VH1 programs. Namaste, lisping HIBISCUS
