Thanks, ry4n. "Love Fool," the ever persistent airplay hit in 1997.
Trivia for the 2002 top 10: Only one ("A Thousand Miles") was released as a CD single. Four- "Foolish," "What's Luv?" "I Need a Girl" and "Oops (Oh My"- were only released on 12-inch vinyl. Two were released as DVD singles ("U Don't Have to Call" and "Don't Let Me Get Me," and the remaining three ("Blurry," "All You Wanted" and "Ain't It Funny") charted solely on airplay points.

And Katy's song is starting to really fall now. Does that mean we are finally done with Katy for awhile? I heard WA piped in at the grocery store. I expect it is next.

HG, per your insight on commercial single releases:
1996 - 2002: I remember stalking the record stores on Tuesdays, desperate to see which airplay hits had been released as CD or cassette singles (and thus affect the Hot 100 ten days hence) By late 2002 I just gave up....

Justin Bieber, Gotye, Maroon 5 Hit Record Books as 2012 Digital Song Sales Are on Fire May 01, 2012 | By Keith Caulfield, Los Angeles
Gotye, Justin Bieber and Maroon 5 have stormed the record books in recent weeks, earning three of the top 10 best sales weeks since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking digital downloads in 2003.
Meanwhile, other notable sales feats have recently been set.
What's behind these surges? Let's take a look.
"Somebody That I Used to Know," Gotye featuring Kimbra (542,000) On the Hot Digital Songs chart dated April 28, the song sold 542,000 downloads, marking the fourth-best digital sales week ever. "Somebody" benefited from the artists' performance on NBC's "Saturday Night Live" (April 14) and a "Glee" cover of the song on the Fox TV series' April 10 episode. Radio has also greatly contributed to the song's chart success, with it rising 8-6 on last week's Hot 100 Airplay chart with an all-format audience of 85 million (up 19%), according to Nielsen BDS.
"Boyfriend," Justin Bieber (521,000) Two weeks earlier, on the April 14 Digital Songs chart, Bieber's "Boyfriend" stormed in at No. 1, selling 521,000 downloads. Only Flo Rida's "Right Round" debuted with a higher total (636,000, the week of Feb. 28, 2009 - the all-time best sales frame). Credit Bieber's sexy sales start, which now ranks as the fifth-biggest downloads frame, to pent-up demand for new material from the 18-year old singer. "Boyfriend" is the lead single from his upcoming album Believe (due June 19), his first non-holiday studio album since My World 2.0 in November 2009.
"Payphone," Maroon 5 featuring Wiz Khalifa (493,000) And finally, "Payphone" arrived last week on Hot Digital Songs with the best digital sales frame (493,000) by a group, besting the 465,000 sold by the Black Eyed Peas' "Boom Boom Pow" the week of April 18, 2009. The start of "Payphone" marked the eighth-best sales week overall.
The song's handsome launch could be attributed to two major factors. For one, It's the band's first single since its Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 smash "Moves Like Jagger." That song, featuring Christina Aguilera, entered the Hot 100 at No. 8 the week of July 9, 2011. Nine weeks later, it spent its first of four weeks at No. 1, making it the band's biggest single. As of last week (May 5), the song was still on the Hot 100 for a 44th week, marking the group's longest-ever stay on the chart (surpassing the 43-week run of 2004's "This Love"). So, clearly, there was going to be a lot of interest in whatever the band released as its follow-up single.
Secondly, the group and Khalifa premiered "Payphone" last Monday (April 16) via a performance on NBC's "The Voice." The band's front man, Adam Levine, is a coach on the reality competition program. After the performance, the song became available via digital retailers.
Beyond those three lofty launches, other recent download sales marks are worth recapping.
fun.'s "We Are Young," featuring Janelle Monae, racked a record seven weeks of sales exceeding 300,000 downloads. On the April 28 Hot Digital Songs chart, the song ranked at No. 2, selling 333,000 downloads, representing an unprecedented seventh straight week of 300,000 or more in digital sales. No song previously registered more than five weeks (consecutive or not) of such stratospheric download totals.
The only other title to rack five weeks of sales of 300,000-plus was Eminem's "Love the Way You Lie," featuring Rihanna, which broke the barrier for five weeks non-consecutively in July/August 2010.
fun.'s success with "Young" began last year, when "Glee" plucked the song out of relative obscurity and covered it on its Dec. 6 episode. The following week, on the Dec. 24 Hot Digital Songs chart, the "Glee" cover debuted at No. 3 with 137,000. The original version by the band debuted at No. 25 with 49,000 (up 1,650%).
Sales of fun.'s "Young" tapered off over the holidays, but came back strong after it was used in a stunt-filled Chevrolet Super Bowl (Feb. 5) commercial touting its 2012 Sonic automobile. On the Feb. 25 Hot Digital Songs chart, "Young" drove from No. 22 to No. 1 with 296,000 downloads sold (up 338%). Three weeks later, it began its seven-week streak of 300,000-plus sales frames. As with Gotye's "Somebody," radio has served as a major contributing factor to the ubiquity of "Young." The track has led Radio Songs the past three weeks, registering 136 million audience impressions (up 4%) on last week's ranking.
Last week (May 5), the Hot Digital Songs chart's top two sellers each moved more than 400,000 for only the second time outside of the Christmas holiday. Thanks to Maroon 5's arrival at No. 1 with "Payphone" (493,000) and Gotye's "Somebody" staying strong at No. 2 (463,000), the top two on Hot Digital Songs both sold more than 400,000 for only the second time outside of the Christmas season.
The only other time such a two-fer occurred was on March 5, 2011, when Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" logged its first full week on the chart (No. 1 with 509,000) and Cee Lo Green's "F**k You! (Forget You)" was at No. 2 (412,000). Both Gaga and Green were basking in the glory of performances of their respective songs on the Grammy Awards that week, hence the strong sales of both tunes.
And, for the past eight weeks, the top-selling song has sold more than 300,000, a record streak. Five of those weeks are owed to fun.'s "Young" while the remaining three were the debuts of Bieber's "Boyfriend" and Maroon 5's "Payphone" and the post-"SNL"/"Glee" rise of Gotye's "Somebody."

ED SHEERAN - The A Team: 2.305
YESSSS. Does this have an actual adds date or is this just random airplay? It would make sense to push him worldwide now that so many British acts are crossing over to America.

jebsib- indeed, by 2002, labels had moved even further away from releasing radio hits on CD singles. Digital sales added a much-needed breath of fresh air to the Hot 100.
More trivia: The first Hot 100 entries to have any sort of digital sales count toward its Hot 100 ranking? Fleetwood Mac's "Peacekeeper" and Madonna's "American Life." They debuted with 1,500 and 4,000, respectively, in March/April 2003. This was prior to the iTunes store opening; these sales were via the acts' official sites.

My local HAC has been playing The A Team for about three months now... at least they've stuck with it! I've never heard it played on any other station.

Got a question for everybody. I'm curious to look at Mainstream Top 40/Pop Songs charts so far this year. My local library actually has issues of the magazine available, but between weeks where BB didn't print a magazine and weeks where the chart wasn't printed in the issue... some are missing. Would anyone be able to help me out with the missing weeks? PM me if you can. :) I'm looking for 1/7, 1/14, 3/3, 4/7, and 4/21.

I had no idea she was 26. I thought she was Bieber's age. I read(?) that they were really good friends. Kinda weird to be close friends when you're under 18(he's known her before he turned 18) with someone who is 26 lol I understand like 21 and 29 or 35 and 42 for examples but 16 and 24 is weird considering him and usher are best buddies i doubt its weird for him

Well I guess Train's "Drive By" is going to miss out on the top 10 again this week...

Unless I'm missing a song, Gotye's STIUTK becomes the first song to ever log 3 weeks over 400k.

If I'm not mistaken, We Are Young crosses the 4 million mark in sales this week.

Well I guess Train's "Drive By" is going to miss out on the top 10 again this week... Maybe. It teeters heavily on how much "Drive By" and Kelly Clarkson's "Stronger" sold this past week. Train have now closed the gap on the On Demand songs chart, and it is only airplay where there is still a sizable chasm. Namaste, lisping HIBISCUS

Unfortunately, Drive By's airplay is increasing at an awfully slow pace. The gap between it and Kelly in airplay is too wide and the sales difference isn't that huge. I don't really see anything else falling out of the top 10 to let it in. Airplay is what's keeping its chances slim.

If I'm not mistaken, We Are Young crosses the 4 million mark in sales this week. Let's see, it sold over 200k last week, and just over 200k again this week, so yes, I do believe it has now sold 4 million downloads. Very impressive.

Gotye Still Atop Hot 100, Carly Rae Jepsen Hits Top 5by Gary Trust, N.Y. | May 02, 2012 3:10 EDT Gotye's "Somebody That I Used to Know," featuring Kimbra, spends a third week at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart. As it maintains its reign, the song becomes the first to tally three weeks of digital sales of at least 400,000. "Somebody" sold 414,000 downloads (down 11%) in the April 23-29 tracking week, according to Nielsen SoundScan, and rebounds 2-1 on the Digital Songs chart. The track registered sales of 463,000 the previous week and 542,000 the week before that. Previously, three other songs logged two weeks each of digital sales of more than 400,000: Flo Rida's "Right Round" (Feb. 28, March 7, 2009), Bruno Mars' "Grenade" (Jan 8, 15, 2011) and Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" (Feb. 26, March 5, 2011). Jack White Scores First No. 1 Album on Billboard 200 Chart Radio helps fuel the sustained stratospheric sales of "Somebody," as the song adds top Airplay Gainer honors on the Hot 100 for a second week. It rises 6-3 on the Radio Songs chart with 106 million in all-format audience (up 24%), according to Nielsen BDS. It spends a ninth week at No. 1 on Alternative Songs and charges 11-7 on Pop Songs. The cut, meanwhile, tops the On-Demand Songs list for a third week, with 1.4 million on-demand streams and a 1% increase in overall streaming, according to BDS. The Hot 100's top three remains static from last week, with fun.'s "We Are Young," featuring Janelle Monae, holding at No. 2 for a third week after logging six weeks atop the Hot 100 and Maroon 5's "Payphone," featuring Wiz Khalifa, remaining at No. 3 after soaring onto the chart last week. "Young" leads Radio Songs for a fourth frame with 137 million audience impressions (up 1%). The cut crowns Pop Songs for a fourth week and takes over atop Adult Pop Songs. On Digital Songs, "Young" dips 3-4 (207,000, down 18%). Despite its drop in rank and sales, the song passes 4 million sold to date. On On-Demand Songs, it holds at No. 2 (1.1 million, down 1%). Following its grand entrance last week, "Payphone" experiences a 33% decrease in digital sales to 330,000. The decline is not entirely unexpected, given that last week's sales were buoyed by Maroon 5 and Khalifa having performed the song on NBC's "The Voice" April 16. Still, radio is quickly warming to "Payphone," which bounds 36-19 in its second week on Radio Songs (48 million, up 46%). Streaming for the song is likewise building rapidly, as it blasts onto On-Demand Songs at No. 13 (501,000, up 139%). The Wanted's former No. 3-peaking hit "Glad You Came" reverses course, rising 5-4, while Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" enters the Hot 100's top five (7-5), gaining in sales, airplay and streaming. "Maybe" moves 5-3 on Digital Songs (221,000, up less than 1%) and 35-25 on Radio Songs (41 million, up 23%) and stays at No. 3 on On-Demand Songs (978,000, up 3%). Flo Rida's "Wild Ones," featuring Sia, remains at No. 6 on the Hot 100 for a third week, while Justin Bieber's "Boyfriend" tumbles 4-7. After its strong start, including a massive opening digital sales frame of 521,000 four weeks ago, "Boyfriend" experiences a setback in airplay, dipping 13-14 on Radio Songs (55 million, down 3%), while continuing its descent (4-5) on Digital Songs (192,000, down 18%). Streaming for "Boyfriend," however, continues to build, with the song earning the top Streaming Gainer award on the Hot 100. It pushes 6-5 on On-Demand Songs with a 9% gain to 804,000. Despite the song's slide on the Hot 100, Radio Songs and Digital Songs, Island Def Jam is continuing to promote "Boyfriend" to radio, owing its overall audience loss to some stations having backed off from spinning it especially heavily upon its arrival. Also in the song's favor going forward: its highly-anticipated video is set to premiere on MTV tomorrow (May 3) at 7:50 p.m. ET. It will be available on VEVO directly after. Filling out the Hot 100's top 10, which is devoid of any new entries this week, Nicki Minaj's "Starships" lifts 9-8; One Direction's "What Makes You Beautiful" drops 8-9; and, Kelly Clarkson's former three-week No. 1 "Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)" is a non-mover at No. 10. Check billboard.com tomorrow (May 3), when all rankings, including the Hot 100 and On-Demand Songs in their entirety and Digital Songs and Radio Songs, will be refreshed, as they are each Thursday. Payphone audience up 46%; Goyte up 24%, yet STIUTK is the Airplay / Greatest Gainer? Have they changed the criterion for that award so its no longer percentage based?

^I thought it was based on number of audience impressions gained, and not percentage.

Otherwise something like Where Have You Been would have a 100% or even higher gain. Something could go from 0.001 to 5.365 and have huge % gains haha
