Influential rapper was diagonosed with cancer in 2009By Rolling Stone May 4, 2012 12:55 PM ET Adam Yauch aka 'MCA' performs with The Beastie Boys in Irvine, California in 2004. Chris Polk/FilmMagic Adam Yauch, one-third of the pioneering hip-hop group the Beastie Boys, has died at the age of 48, Rolling Stone has learned. Yauch, also known as MCA, had been in treatment for cancer since 2009. The rapper was diagnosed in 2009 after discovering a tumor in his salivary gland. Yauch sat out the Beastie Boys' induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in April, and his treatments delayed the release of the group's most recent album, Hot Sauce Committee, Pt. 2. The Beastie Boys had not performed live since the summer of 2009, and Yauch's illness prevented the group from appearing in music videos for Hot Sauce Committee, Pt. 2. Yauch co-founded the Beastie Boys with Mike "Mike D" Diamond and Adam "Ad-Rock" Horowitz in 1979. The band started off as a hardcore punk group, but soon began experimenting with hip-hop. The band broke big with their first proper album, Licensed to Ill, in 1986, and further albums Paul's Boutique, Check Your Head and Ill Communication cemented the band as a true superstar act. In addition to his career with the Beastie Boys, Yauch was heavily involved in the movement to free Tibet and co-organized the Tibetan Freedom Concerts of the late Nineties. In 2002, he launched the film production company Oscilloscope Laboratories.

Wow. I knew it was bad since he didn't appear at his R&R HoF induction, but still, damn. RIP MCA.

A hip-hop legend and pioneer. Lighters up for MCA. My favorite member of the Beastie Boys, ever since childhood.

How tragic. :(
The Beastie Boys are among my lifelong favorite groups, and that is a heartbreaking way to abruptly pass away. My condolences go out to his fellow group members and loved ones.
Namaste, lisping HIBISCUS

The 80s superstars are dying off... :( You said it. I wasn't the biggest fan, but I loved a few of their singles. They just got inducted in the RRHOF this year. R.I.P. Adam :'(

R.I.P. Adam. 47 is just too soon.
I was a casual fan of their music. "Brass Monkey" and "Intergalactic" are my favorites.

This is sad. But, I have to point out that he was 47 when he died, not 48.

R.I.P, one of hip-hop's pioneers.
Oh, and Em released a statement regarding the death of Adam: [Eminem noted the impact MCA and the Beasties had on his career. "Adam Yauch brought a lot of positivity into the world and I think it's obvious to anyone how big of an influence the Beastie Boys were on me and so many others," Em said in a statement to MTV News. "They are trailblazers and pioneers and Adam will be sorely missed. My thoughts and prayers are with his family, Mike D., and Ad-Rock."]

"The Beastie Boys were one of a kind! And so was Adam! They were all an important part of my musical history and integral to the musical revolution that was happening at the time. I'm very sad to hear about Adam's passing. God bless him and his family" - Madonna www.facebook.com/madonna

Terrible. R.I.P.
I've been watching this performance of "Ch-Check It Out" which starts in the New York City subway, moves through the streets and ends up in a TV studio.
