I was pretty confident that Train would eventually make the Top Ten in spite of being blockaded between #11 and #12 for over a month. In part because it was only a matter of time before Kelly Clarkson could no longer hold off Train's airplay gains while losing spins on her end, and also because most first-week debuts are wildly front-loaded and still wouldn't make up for Train's combined airplay gains and digital strength.

Lyrically, "Drive By" is a disaster. I'm quite sure that the "2-Ply" reference is an euphemism for vagina, and that realization alone makes the whole Hefty Bag analogy deeply unsettling, as though he's comparing the lover in question to garbage. But there's no mistaking its infectious composition, and though it isn't a full saving grace (the terrible lyrics aren't overshadowed by the catchy beat)............it's hard to argue how this doesn't resonate to pop listeners.

I still nominate it for one of the five worst singles of 2012 thus far. But at least it's a catchy worst single.

It's the slowest-rising top 10 hit since Lupe Fiasco's "The Show Must Go On" cracked the top 10 in its 21st week in May 2011. This is Train's third top 10 hit. All three songs have taken their sweet time to get there. "Drops Of Jupiter (Tell Me)" took 14 weeks to crack the top 10 in June 2001. "Hey, Soul Sister" took 16 weeks to break through in January 2010. "Drops Of Jupiter" wound up peaking at #5. "Hey, Soul Sister" reached #3. Both songs won Grammys. "Drops Of Jupiter" was voted Best Rock Song of 2001. "Hey, Soul Sister" won for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal for 2010.

"Somebody That I Used To Know" by Gotye featuring Kimbra is #1 for the fifth straight week. This equals the number of weeks the song spent at the top of the U.K. chart in February and March. It's the third song to spend five or more weeks at #1 in both countries in the past 15 months. It follows Adele's "Someone Like You" (five weeks on top in both countries) and "We Found Love" by Rihanna featuring Calvin Harris (10 weeks in the U.S., six in the U.K.)

"Somebody That I Used To Know" tops the 4 million mark in digital sales in its 19th week on Hot Digital Songs. Only one other song in digital history has sold that many copies so quickly. "E.T." by Katy Perry featuring Kanye West topped 4 million when it was in its 18th week on the chart.

"Somebody…" tops the 300K mark in digital sales for the sixth straight week. Only one other song in digital history has achieved that feat: "We Are Young" by fun. featuring Janelle Monae, which topped 300K for seven weeks. Will "Somebody" tie this record next week? Stay tuned.

"Payphone" by Maroon 5 featuring Wiz Khalifa jumps to #2 in its fourth week. It's vying to become the group's third #1, following "Makes Me Wonder," which reached the top spot in its fourth week in April 2007, and "Moves Like Jagger" (featuring Christina Aguilera), which hit the top in its 10th week in August 2011.

The line "One more stupid love song I'll be sick" is ironic, given Adam Levine's long history of love songs, such as "This Love," "She Will Be Loved" and last year's "Stereo Hearts." The line (and the irony) echoes Wings' 1976 smash "Silly Love Songs," which opened with Paul McCartney singing "You'd think that people would have had enough of silly love songs."

Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe," which holds at #4 for the second week, is the only song in the top five this week that isn't a collabo. "Call Me Maybe" tops the 2 million mark in digital sales this week. It is likely to wind up as the best-selling song by a Canadian female artist in digital history. That distinction is currently held by Avril Lavigne's "Girlfriend," which has sold 3,495,000 copies since its release in February 2007. "Promiscuous" by Nelly Furtado featuring Timbaland is in second place. It has sold 2,817,000 copies since its release in May 2006.

"Wild Ones" by Flo Rida featuring Sia, which holds at #5 for the second week, tops the 2 million mark in digital sales this week. It's Flo Rida's sixth 2 million seller. Flo Rida's new "Whistle" jumps from #95 to #77 in its third week. It has climbed as high as #64.

One Direction's "What Makes You Beautiful," which rebounds from #9 to #7, also tops the 2 million mark in digital sales this week. It's the second song by a boy band (or at least a group that is widely perceived as a boy band) to achieve this sales threshold. The Wanted's "Glad You Came" topped 2 million three weeks ago (and is now up to 2,436,000). The record was long held by Jonas Brothers' 2008 hit "Burnin' Up," which has sold 1,781,000 copies.

Justin Bieber's "Boyfriend" dips from #8 to #9 in its seventh week. Bieber's new "Turn To You" debuts at #60. Bieber has announced plans to donate the proceeds of this song to aid single mothers.

Here's the low-down on this week's top 10 songs.

The Second Five: Nicki Minaj's "Starships" inches up from #7 to #6 in its 13th week on the chart. It has been in the top 10 the entire time. Digital sales rank: #6 (151K)…One Direction's "What Makes You Beautiful" jumps from #9 to #7 in its 13th week on the chart. This is its seventh week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #8 (146K)…The Wanted's "Glad You Came" drops from #6 to #8 in its 18th week on the chart. This is its 12th week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #10 (95K) … Justin Bieber's "Boyfriend" dips from #8 to #9 in its seventh week on the chart. It has been in the top 10 the entire time. Digital sales rank: #4 (165K)…Train's "Drive By" jumps from #11 to #10 in its 18th week on the chart. Digital sales rank: #12 (92K).

Kelly Clarkson's "Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)" dips from #10 to #11, ending a 16-week run in the top 10. Only one of her 10 top 10 hits had a longer run in the top 10: 2005's "Since U Been Gone," which held tight for 20 weeks.

Adele's "Rumour Has It" holds at #16 for the fourth straight week. I thought this would make the top 10, but it's not looking good…"Dance Again" by Jennifer Lopez featuring Pitbull jumps from #20 to #17 in its sixth week. J.Lo performed the song on American Idol last week. Digital sales rank: #9 (104K)…Pitbull's own smash, "Back In Time," leaps from #30 to #21 in its sixth week.

Rihanna's "Where Have You Been" vaults from #29 to #18 in its fourth week. It's the third top 20 hit from Talk That Talk. It follows the aforementioned "We Found Love" and "You Da One" (#14)…Karmin's "Brokenhearted" jumps from #26 to #20 in its 10th week.

Usher has three songs on this week's chart. "Climax" drops from #17 to #22 in its 12th week. It holds at #1 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs for the fifth straight week. "Scream" vaults from #46 to #25 in its third week. "Lemme See" (featuring Rick Ross) debuts at #98. All three songs are from Usher's Looking For Myself album, which is due June 12…Ellie Goulding's "Lights" jumps from #35 to #26 in its 21st week.

"No Lie" by 2 Chainz featuring Drake, is the week's top new entry at #45. The rapper's debut studio album, Based On A T.R.U. Story, is due Aug. 14. 2 Chainz is featured on two other hits on this week's chart. "Mercy" by Kanye West, Big Sean, Pusha T and 2 Chainz jumps from #36 to #27 in its sixth week. The song has climbed as high as #21. "Beez In The Trap" by Nicki Minaj featuring 2 Chainz jumps from #61 to #56 in its sixth week. This is its highest ranking to date.

Jason Aldean's "Fly Over States" jumps from #34 to #32 in its 12th week. The song jumps to #1 on this week's Hot Country Songs chart. It's Aldean's seventh #1 country hit…Kip Moore's "Somethin' 'Bout A Truck" jumps from #43 to #35 in its 14th week…Ca$hOut's "Cashin Out" jumps from #63 to #52 in its fifth week…Neon Trees' "Everybody Talks" jumps from #68 to #57 in its ninth week. This ties its highest ranking to date.

There are eight new entries on this week's chart. Four are by contestants on The Voice, either solo or in tandem with their coaches. Tony Lucca's version of Jay-Z's "99 Problems" debuts at #58, followed by Lucca's version of the Beatles' "Yesterday" (featuring Adam Levine) at #68, Jermaine Paul's version of R. Kelly's "I Believe I Can Fly" at #83 and Chris Mann's version of "The Prayer" (featuring Christina Aguilera) at #85. This is the highest-charting version of the Beatles' "Yesterday" since a cover by Ray Charles hit #25 in 1967. It's the second version of "The Prayer" to chart, following one by Celine Dion & Josh Groban which reached #70 in 2008.

"The Prayer" first appeared in the 1998 movie Quest For Camelot. It received an Oscar nomination for Best Song. It appeared on the soundtrack in separate versions by Celine Dion (in English) and Andrea Bocelli (in Italian). The two stars came together to record a duet version, which first appeared later that same year on Dion's Christmas album, These Are Special Times.

Alex Clare's "Too Close" jumps from #75 to #63 in its seventh week. This matches its highest ranking to date. The song is featured in a TV ad campaign for Microsoft Internet Explorer 9…Dierks Bentley's "5-1-5-0" debuts at #94. The song breaks into the top 20 this week on Hot Country Songs.

More than 2 years after first hearing this song, I am thrilled to learn about its success. After seeing it flop in the UK, I never thought it would ever become this successful in the US. Such an amazing song. :)

I know it's thanks to the streaming component, but it still feels blah that The Voice couldn't get any song in the top half of the chart this season. Also the contestant with the two highest-charting songs, and the other contestant with two charters, both lost.

I enjoyed the combo of top 10s we'd had for awhile. The 5 of Fun/Nicki/Carly/1D/Kelly makes for the most songs I've liked in the T10 in years.
