While your first hit is still charting you can't be a one-hit wonder ... No one's saying that these artists can already be considered one-hit wonders; just that they're likely to have that status in the future.

So, it looks like "Birthday Cake" will miss the top 20 on the Hot 100. Interestingly, Chris Brown's label did not release the "Turn Up the Music" remix featuring Rihanna- I gather both labels were not keen on the collabos. The latter didn't perform as well as some of Brown's other hits.

I would've thought Katy Perry would have 10million in audience by now. Well considering it's the 8th single, the only thing(s) that were going to enable it to take off was either promo (the BMAs performance) or an adds date (which was this week). I'll be surprised

Gotye's airplay is so high right now that I'm not sure #1 on the Hot 100 for Carly is possible even next week? Maybe the following weeks though if sales hold up.

"Wide Awake" really isn't an eighth single, though- it's the second single from Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection. :) It's only been commercially available for a couple of months. Now, had it been available on the original TD from the start, it would be an eighth single.
It is the eight single from the TD era, though. ;)

Everything has a saturation point.

^Although, Wide Awake it's starting well. But I think it won't be top 10 on Hot 100. I think listeners are tiring of whiny break-up songs overall, and especially considering its predecessor was the defiant, self-empowering "Part of Me", many will just react to this thinking: "What's the big deal? I thought you were moving on, that you were looking past this?" "Part of Me" wasn't a particularly strong single to begin with. The bridge is virtually identical to that of "The One That Got Away". The fact she alludes to her own previous hit "Firework" in it is itself terribly lazy. And finally, when considering the whole........it can't help but sound like a demo of what could have been a more ambitiously produced record. It just sounds flat. At the very least "Part of Me" had a danceable beat. "Wide Awake" is an even weaker release, and yes, I do expect this to break her streak of Top Ten Billboard hits too. Namaste, lisping HIBISCUS

I don't see whats lazy about referencing to another one of your songs in a song. When Part of Me was written, Firework wasn't even a hit!
As for the Wide Awake, thematically its probably my favorite Katy Perry single. While its a breakup song, its not really a sad one and it doesn't seem like a step backwards from Part of Me. .
In fact, I feel that its the perfect end to Teenage Dream, its really a song about growing up and moving on.

Then followed up directly with a "really (expletive) dark" LP, brooding further on the subject! ;) Subject matter aside, it just isn't catchy for radio. I'm willing to bet when many are surveyed to choose one adjective to describe Katy Perry, one of three answers you'll all but certainly hear is "colorful." That's why Katy Perry got away with a long streak of chart-topping singles recently. Many couldn't help but be drawn to her energy, even when many cynically dismissed her on a personal level. You may not care for Perry personally, perhaps even view her as the face of much of what's wrong with the music industry these days........but even among many of these cynical faces, you're just as likely to hear them add "I'll admit this though........she knows how to write ridiculously catchy songs, and I can't help but like some of them!" But I feel that afterglow may be dissipating at this point. "Part of Me" may have went #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, but let's be truthful here: it was mainly because it was a front-loaded lead single from a re-release. Because when you scrutinize its overall chart run comparatively with that of earlier singles, "Part of Me" has signaled signs of wear, especially on the digital chart. It wasn't even in the Top Ten that long. "Wide Awake" will only further exhaust listeners, I'm predicting, and make her seem, suddenly, colorless. Namaste, lisping HIBISCUS

I would've thought Katy Perry would have 10million in audience by now. Nah. Before the announcement that she was performing this on the BMAs, it was still unknown on whether "Wide Awake" or "Dressin' Up" would be next. It just went for adds today, and it's already getting 1 million updates. That's fantastic! It will be at 10 million before we know it. ;) Gotye's airplay is so high right now that I'm not sure #1 on the Hot 100 for Carly is possible even next week? Maybe the following weeks though if sales hold up. Estimating here, but tomorrow's updates: CMM - 99.7 mill STIUTK - 188.9 mill I know Mediabase is much higher than SoundScan at the moment, but both songs should be relatively the same distance from each other on there too. Estimating their numbers there: CMM - 82 mill STIUTK - 155 mill So Carly needs to sell roughly 73k more than Gotye to have a fighting chance. That's quite a big lead, especially giving STIUTK will be #2 digitally and CMM #1 digitally. Throw in the fact that STIUTK will most likely still be ahead of CMM in streaming, their numbers should be fairly close, but STIUTK should still come out on top this week. Next week, on the other hand, CMM will have gained MASSIVELY on STIUTK airplay wise. Hopefully she'll be able to retain her #1 lead digitally. #1 is VERY likely next week! So exciting!

Part of Me was certainly in the top 10 long enough for it to be considered a huge hit. What...11...12 weeks? That's 3 months. That is not a blip on the radar for any song. It was in the top 10 for its entire run until it peaked. That is a hit.

Namaste, lisping HIBISCUS even with her movie on the horizon, with Wide Awake as the theme song? Surely the movie will give this song a super boost, especially Week 1 of release. It's going to be heard on commercials all week long. Plus who knows what they do with iTunes banners and discounts...
