I don't know if anyone has noticed yet but one of our topics in the Music News forum was removed a week ago. That followed a warning from ProBoards that they had been contacted by a representative from Soundscan who saw the topic had been gathering information that is technically owned by Soundscan and thus considered to be copyright. ProBoards or Pulse does not have permission to gather and post this information and thus it is against rules and regulations to have it. The Rules have been updated to include this in addition to our previous stance on mp3s. Therefore, posting data from Soundscan is now against Pulse rules and will be taken seriously. Data from soundscan will only allowed to be discussed if it is directly given from a source. The source MUST be a reputable one and NOT from a blog or another message board. This means ukmix, for example, cannot be given as a source but an article posted on a site like Billboard can. Also, direct links to outside sources that gather Soundscan information will not be allowed either, unless it is legal. This will be treated the same way as a link to an illegally posted mp3 website. Anyone who doesn't follow the above guidelines will be warned with the possibility of a suspension or permanent ban. Just like our rule regarding mp3s, this is something that will be taken seriously because it not only risks yourselves but also the continuation of Pulse.

Sad news.
The sad part is that this board will become deserted. I for one am emigrating to other music boards.

Can't we make Pulse private where you have to log in to view the forum? Wouldn't change anything. Violating copyright law is still a violation of the Proboards TOS and would leave us subject to discipline from them and prosecution by the infringed upon parties. Nothing posted to the Internet is truly private. Don't think I don't understand why not being privy to SoundScan data sucks at a chart discussion site, but unless someone has the disposable funds to buy Pulse its own subscription, we're going to have to respect Nielsen's (and any other entity's) rights.

ukmix is not private. Anyone one of us can easily go over there to check stats. However, i wonder if they got the notice, too?

So this is not a big deal. The thread(s) that got zapped here cited ukmix as the source. Those that caught us here likely also know about ukmix too but being an overseas site it might fall outside their jurisdiction.

5.017 million albums were sold in the US last week.
1.981 million were digital albums.
3.036 million were physical cds.

For what it's worth, it seems as though MDNA has completely fallen off the Billboard 200 this week.

And MDNA will re-enter...
It probably ended up at #202.

^ Somewhere around there... It's like #156 on Current Albums so it's #215 overall at the lowest.

And MDNA will re-enter... Will it?I can see it stabilizing at around 2k for awhile but it's not like there are any upcoming appearances or radio play to support a resurgence in sales. I don't see the tour helping it either.

It would not only need to stabilize but likely move upward, unless there is a really down week where lots of albums above it fall faster

^^The S&S Tour kept Hard Candy on the Billboard 200 so MDNA could re-enter.
A 3rd single/video is planned plus concert redemptions.
BTW, Billboard mentioned a few weeks ago that Linkin Park's new album was being offered with tickets for their upcoming tour.

^ It seems to becoming more common, even with less "big-name" artists: Regina Spektor's album, which is #3 this week, used the same promotion. I hope her second-week crash is nothing like Madonna's.

^She did? She cheated! One Direction should sue Billboard! They should be #3, not Regina!

Aw sucks about Soundscan, but all Soundscan info is posted at a million other music boards and sources (Sorry Soundscan!) so I will just migrate there for album sales news.

Two top seats to Madge's tour in Philadelphia (through Comcast, the designated ticket outlet) are almost $800 with fees/taxes- a lot more than past tours (some of that, of course, coming from the MDNA standard edition that ticket buyers must take action to redeem). Unfortunately, I will be passing on the tour (at least at those prices).
Without the bundling, I do wonder what the trajectory would have been like up until now. I imagine the album would not have opened as high as 358K- maybe around 250K or so. And then the second-week decline may not have been as large. The to-date sales up to now probably would have been similar to what they are now, though. So, in the end, likely similar results. It's just that the sales were insanely front-loaded because of the promotion.

^ Fully agreed. She'll just keep creaking along to the 500k mark now... All things considered, not actually that terrible.

^Yah- given that the prior album has scanned around 740,000 and had a decent-sized radio hit. The weekly sales level likely will be lower by the time the tour hits the USA (late August), though maybe the next video will spark a small bump. And, I neglected to mention that it's not only the standard edition that's available via the promotion, but the edited standard version. Also, maybe some will redeem copies after seeing the show, etc.

Just like the music industry shooting itself in the foot when it decided to go nuclear on Napster, and by suing housewives and kids for illegal downloading, Nielsen Soundscan I believe is being pigheaded and shortsighted by asserting its intellectual property rights to sales figures. Or, in other words, I'm pi**ed at Nielsen Soundscan.
Has Nielsen lost a single penny of revenues from subscriptions (which I have read can cost as much as $10,000 per year) because the data has been posted on websites and blogs several days after their subscribers got it? I think not, but maybe I'm wrong.
All that being said, of course ProBoards and Pulse must comply with Soundscan's request, as the consequences of not doing so are draconian.

Soundscan sells a product that can be as much as 10,000 dollars for a single list. They market to the music industry. For the sake of argument let's say the figure is 10,000 for a subscription (I do not know the exact figure) If Soundscan were to allow their product to be given away for free, would people still be willing to pay 10,000 for it? Likely not This is how they lose money.

SoundScan has always done this. You could never post it's sales figures without permission. It's not gonna change anything as far as their business is concerned.
