This was the second single from the parent album of the same name, which was a worldwide smash and the UK's biggest selling album of 1980. It was also their ninth and final #1 hit in the UK. The title refers to gigantic stadium spotlights (dubbed "super troupers") and the lyrics, in contrast to the upbeat instrumental and cheery vocals, are quite melancholy.

I always thought highly of this song, but it never reached the Top 40. It stalled at number 46.

When I first heard it, I wasn't crazy about it, but after a couple more listens, I realized it was quite lovely, both melodically and lyrically. Great song.
