Is there any way to see the true total? Or are all of those sales from under 3.49 just unaccounted for? Those sales that do not count for the Billboard 200 should still count for RIAA shipments, so they will be accounted for in that way. There's also a chance the amount the album sold under the discount may be released, but it will never count towards the albums total except as shipments.

I think without anymore singles or significant promo (that we know of) it will continue to decline a bit faster and level off at around 2.6 million. Not that that is a bad result considering its relatively slow start but 3 million might not happen for a long while.

What if there'll be a re-release of a re-release with a new remix?

I think it is amazing that, if they wanted to they could eaisly realease a 9th single and im positive it would be a hit. Peacock or HH would go platnium and keep the album selling. Then they could realease the other as a 10th single and im sure it would do good. Then riding off momentum they could release Not like the movies, and it would do okay and go at least gold. i know this wouldnt happen, but im just saying if they wanted to they could eaisly have 11 singles from this project which is insane

Katy is approaching 2.400 million.
For 3xp, she have to be over 2.800 million.
It could happen...

I imagine it will happen, just not for a while. Sidenote: Why is "The Fame" at 4.4 million sold and still only 3x platinum?

^Because GaGa's label refuses to pay for the RIAA audit for the 4xp certification.
Same with Eminem. Recovery is 3xp, but it has sold over 4 million.
Labels spend their certification money now on digital singles and are ignoring album re-certifications.
I have a list of ~280 under-certiifed albums that I am slowly working on. I hope to post it soon.

How expensive is it to re-certify?

~$400. LOL

...Wow. Although I guess that adds up with a song possibly flying past million marks once a month at its peak sales... Multiply that by a few songs per artist, multiple artsts, etc. It would add up. But still. You would think for the big artists they would care more.

^Yes.
Gotye was just certified 5xp.
That's:
Gold Platinum 2xp 3xp 4xp 5xp
6 certifications for just 1 song

I'm not surprised labels are keeping singles' certifactions up to date rather than albums. They sell more rapidly than albums.

^But, they make more money off albums.
I don't understand why labels keep out of date certifications on the Billboard 200 each week.
Labels probably don't even read Billboard anymore. They just view the SoundScan charts.

Certifications are really about marketing. I think there has been a bit of a collective decision by the labels that there is not a lot of value anymore in touting specific certification levels.
Pre-Soundscan, certifications were the only way to reliably state sales figures. And even after Soundscan and up until the digital age kicked in mid-00s, record clubs were still a decent chunk of business and CD stores were far more common and could have potentially hundreds of thousands of copies of most CDs sitting on their shelves, so labels could use certifications to bump up the numbers to sound better.
Now certs are so close to the actual sales reported that there really isn't any reason to not just say the Soundscan number, which is what they're already paying for anyway.

Definitely. Also, a lot of people I know that used to be responsible for certification at labels have lost their jobs and the labels don't really prioritize this as something that HAS to be done...

^Which is why I am the crazy person on Twitter who tweets artists to remind their label to certify their albums with the RIAA.
Sometimes it works...
I also tweet a congratulations to an artist who has a new RIAA album certification. That tweet usually gets retweeted by fans of the artist.

Maybe they're waiting till they can certify The Fame and Recovery 5xp each? It will take awhile but both will reach 4.8 million (which should be enough for 5xp status)

^I doubt they are "waiting." That's what a lot of fans say when an expected certification does not happen.
They still have to pay for the 4xp certification and then the 5xp certification.
Labels are lazy and cheap.
That's why I'm going through the artist. Artists/managers/fans want an RIAA award.
Billboard frequently has pics of artists receiving an RIAA award so there is definitely interest.

I think album certifications are more important than singles certifications. I don't care about singles being certified 2x Platinum, I know what they've sold. But an album certified 2x Platinum feels more like a milestone for the artist.

CROSSING THE OCEAN: Frank Ocean’s Def Jam/IDJ album Channel Orange debuted at #2 on HITS’ Album sales chart last week, moving a total of 131k, all from iTunes. With the physical release last week—minus Target, in protest of the digital exclusive—the album is on track to sell over 50k this week. Soundscan’s total will subtract the 10,000 or so from Amazon, who are selling the release at $2.99, given its arbitrary rule that a release has to be out a minimum of four weeks before including any sales below $3.49. Of course, that was after SoundScan had already counted similar sales of Lady Gaga’s Born This Way (99 cents) and Madonna’s MDNA (given away with the price of a ticket). In order to deliver the most complete sales information, HITS will include all Amazon sales in its Frank Ocean chart total tomorrow to reflect IDJ’s aggressive digital and pricing policy in getting the critically acclaimed album out to as wide an audience as possible. (7/23p)

On the certifications topic from a few days ago, if a song is certified double platinum when it hits 2 million, then not certified for 3 million, when it hits 4 million, does the label have to pay for a triple platinum certification and a quadruple platinum one as well, or can they skip directly to the quadruple platinum?
