Well, I got my new car and had the Sirius Satellite Radio activated. So, now I have one vehicle with XM and the other with Sirius. If you are pondering which one to buy, I recommend XM because it has a lot more variety of channels and the music stations play a lot more variety in the music. Sirius seems to be repetitive at times and tend to play more core artists... Beatles, Elvis, Britney, Mariah, Pearl Jam, etc. XM music channels play the core artists, but they also play A LOT of one-hit wonders and obscure music. I will say this, Sirius has XM beat when it comes to AC music. They have three great channels. StarLite Channel 2, which is mix of today's AC and it sounds like BIG number ones from the 80's and 90's, Love Channel 3, plays all love songs and they seem to do a better job then XM 23 The Heart, and the best one is Channel 4 (I forget the name), but it sounds like AC Oldies from the 60's, 70's, and 80's. I drove to San Antonio today and rarely changed the channel from that.
Sirius Music Channels sound good, but the talk, info, and sports don't seem to be as clear as XM. Some of them sound like AM stereo.
I do like Sirius's payment options better than XM, and the longer you subscribe for, the cheaper the rate.
If I could only have one, I'd have to choose XM. They seem to have more of what I would like to listen to, but Sirius has a lot to offer, too.
I highly recommend both or either.

I have both Sirius and XM and both services have their good points.. There are communites for each of the services that you can check out for more opinions at www.xm411.comor www.siriusbackstage.comI like XM's specialty programming and music channels better than Sirius, but Sirius has more Dj's and personalities than XM.. On the Sirius 80s stream they have former MTV VJ's Nina Blackwood, Alan Hunter, and Mark Goodman.. I also like Sirius talk offerings, not so much the sound, but they have both Air America and Sirius Left.. While, XM has more of a talk variety of Right Talk shows.. I guess it all depends on exactly what you are looking for..

www.xmfan.com is another good XM site. There's also a satellite radio board at Radio-Info: www.radio-info.com/mods/posts.php?Cat=&Board=satelliteAnyway, from what I've heard of the services, snoman and tobedawg are right on the money in their analysis. Sirius is tighter and more repetitive with more emphasis on personalities. XM has more variety, but less exciting jocks. I don't have either satellite service yet, but I'm heavily considering becoming an XM subscriber when the new, smaller "Roady 2" receivers come out this summer. I consider XM the better choice for my tastes. XM has better dance stations, more variety on the rock stations, and a 90's channel. That's what I'm looking for. I was at the beach this weekend and heard a few stores playing XM's BPM dance channel and was hooked.

Sirius doesn't have channels for 1990's, soundtracks, or African music. XM doesn't have as many sports channels or a channel that plays regional Mexican and Tejano music. It depends on what kind of music you like. I'd just look at the channel list for both services and pick the one that has the most channels I'd like. Now if only XM or Sirius would come to Canada.

I think XM and Sirius would need some kind of waiver to get around the law that requires a percentage of the music you play to be Canadian artists.
They might help convince the Canadian Government, if they dedicate a channel to Canadian based artists.
Just a thought.
The more and more I listen to Sirius, I doubt I will renew my subscription in 15 months. I think XM is leaps and bounds better as far as the variety of music. The R&B/Soul channels on Sirius are AWFUL. I don't know who is consulting them or who is in charge of their programming, but they need LOTS of help. Does anyone still talk to Ron Rodrigues? Do you know if he is still is at Sirius and if he has e-mail there? I'd like to talk to him about it.

Snoman, I've visited www.siriusbackstage.com before. I never posted there. But I remember there was someone named Ron Rondrigues. I think Sirius Ron is the name he uses at Sirius Backstage. Hope that helps. I don't know his email. I remember you from the old R&R boards. I went by the name dj_antonio, and then phunky monkey. I don't know if you remember me or not, because I only posted occasionally. I just found these Pulse boards last night.

He found me on the radio info boards. www.radio-info.com. It's basically all radio news. Thanks for the Sirius links, too. :)

What kind of programs do you get on these sports channels? Is it pretty much all talk shows, or do you ever get broadcasts of games on these?

Well, both have an "ESPN Radio" channel, so you get all the "ESPN Game of the Week" for whichever sport is in season on both services. Sirius adds extra NHL coverage and all of the NFL games, neither of which is available on XM.

No, I prepaid for 15 months. You can do month to month. It is just more expensive. The longer you subscribe, the more you save. It is very smart marketing on their part.

I was hoping for extra NBA coverage, since I can't get any of their games on the radio, and to a lesser extent, MLB games, since I get poor receptions for broadcasts of both of the teams I follow. I can see satellite radio offering specific channels for the broadcasts of each team sometime into the future. However, they'd have to work out some sort of deal with the respective leagues, which would probably result in having to purchase some overpriced premium package, as if to say we'd be taking the blame for the lack of range by the local affiliates.

I think Sirius will open the door with the NFL broadcasts and they'll see the success of it and probably go after NBA and MLB regular season games, too... and not just the game of the week. I'd definitely pay extra to get to hear the Mets broadcasts on the WFAN Mets Radio Network. I'm looking forward to hearing Steelers games on Sirius. I can pick up WOAI in Houston at night, which carries the Spurs games, so I am good there. I wouldn't hate it though, if the games were crystal clear. XM has the NASCAR channel, which carries all the NASCAR races.

Sirius had the NBA games last season, not sure if the contract was renewed for 04-05 though.
Here's the comparision for sports:
XM has ESPN Radio, ESPNEWS, Fox Sports Radio, Sporting News radio, Nascar radio, and ACC and Pac 10 football and Basketball games.
Sirius has ESPN radio, ESPNEWS, Sports Byline USA, NFL network, NFL and NHL games
If you are into sports TALK, XM is better, live play by play go to Sirius.

Has anyone noticed difference in the 90's channel lately? More obsucre songs and such XM has always played more obscure songs on their decade channels. I really hate that Sirius does not. Sirius plays the big hits and that is it. Also, Sirius does not have a 90's station. I don't know why? It's my understanding that it is one of XM's most popular channels.

Sirius used to have an all-90s station up until early 2003; now it's a hot-AC station (the Pulse).

Maybe it's just me, but I haven't noticed much difference musically on 90's on 9. I just hope they bring Spin Cycle (or some other kind of dance mix) back to 90's on 9. Either that or air a dance mix show on Kiss, which has playing a large amount of recurrents lately.
On an semi-unrelated note, I heard what sounded like a great radio station at Back Yard Burgers (a gourmet fast food chain) in Mandeville. Turns out they were playing XM 22 (Mix XM). Pretty cool to hear XM playing (and playing fairly loud) in a local restaurant.
