No surprise on who will be #1. Taylor Swift's New Single Debuts on Hot 100 -- Sales Forecast Grows to Over 500,000 August 15, 2012 | By Keith Caulfield, Los Angeles Taylor Swift's new single "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" is selling much faster than initially thought. Industry sources now suggest the track -- released late on Monday, Aug. 13 -- will probably move easily move more than 500,000 downloads by the end of the tracking week on Sunday, Aug. 19. It even has a pretty decent shot of surpassing the 600,000 mark. Yesterday, forecasters were suggesting it would launch with 400,000 to 500,000. But, once sources saw how well it was already selling, it blew all projections out of the water. If it surpasses 448,000, it will earn the largest debut for a digital song by a woman in history. Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" holds the current feat among female acts, when it launched at No. 1 on Billboard's Digital Songs chart with 448,000 according to Nielsen SoundScan. I'm divided.
I'm glad that after a handful of releases where she was frustratingly held back at the #2 spot, she will finally have a #1 hit to her credit.
On the other hand, this is the worst single of her career to date, in my opinion, and it is such a great shame that the honor has to be tied to something as puerile as this when she has frequently proven, based on her back catalog, that she is usually among the sharpest, most instinctive and witty lyricists in the genre.
At any rate, congratulations are in order for Ms. Swift, and I am also optimistic "We Will Never Ever Get Back Together" will be the outlier on her forthcoming fourth album. I'm just hoping this won't be the last time she hits #1, and more importantly the second time she hits #1, it will be with a much more substantive offering in terms of songwriting.

Wow, Taylor.
What's the biggest one-week sales ever? Was it from Right Round or Tik Tok?

Right Round with 636,000, it looks like Taylor could maybe pass it this week. It looks like she's been trending upward too. I don't see that on the iTunes popularity chart. "... Never Ever ..." has had 7 consecutive "red" updates. By my calculations, its dropped about 30-35% since the first non-red update of around 20 hrs ago. I think its way too early to tell whether the blistering sales will continue into the week, especially with some of the negative comments from listeners (in particular country radio listeners).

Right Round with 636,000, it looks like Taylor could maybe pass it this week. Funny if she does and dethrones Flo Rida twice (from the Hot 100 and the opening week record). I couldn't care less about her career, but it's about time this record be broken. Go buy Taylor Swift singles, Americans.

Shame that the honor has to be tied to something as puerile as this when she has frequently proven, based on her back catalog, that she is usually among the sharpest, most instinctive and witty lyricists in the genre. I love her, but...her songs which came the closest to #1 weren't really paragons of songwriting. "Today was a fairytale, you were the prince/I used to be a damsel in distress./You took me by the hand, and you picked me up at six/Today was a fairytale, today was a fairytale/Today was a fairytale, I wore a dress/You wore a dark gray t-shirt" Love Story makes random and inappropriate literary references. You Belong with Me is a song I love but it's a song many people love to point out as an example of how immature her songs are. Her best-crafted songs tend to not be smash hits. I mean, it'd be nicer if they were, but I'm okay with her smash hits allowing her to continue making amazing songs that her fans love, even if the general public won't hear them.

"You Belong With Me" should have gone #1, it's brilliant and I think will be a timeless classic of late noughties pop.
When will labels learn that payola Clear Channel deals the first week are bad for longevity? If you force a song upon the public like that they will most likely react negatively, songs need to gestate slowly and people need to familiarize themselves with it before they hear the thing 5 times a day out of the blue. She's getting bad feedback from listeners (receipts for this though?) because of this.

I agree with you with regard to the mediocrity of "Today Was a Fairytale" and that "Love Song" wasn't a particularly well-written offering either. I do think "You Belong to Me" deserved to top the chart, though, because of how tightly and masterfully it is composed and because of the searing emotional payoff resonating at the heart of its infectious hook, in spite of not being lyrically groundbreaking. I'd consider "Back to December" her best single to date in that I feel her vocals are at her best there because they are more nuanced and reflect the melancholy regret driving the track, followed by "Sparks Fly" and "Fifteen". I'd round up the top five with "White Horse" and "You Belong to Me". Namaste, lisping HIBISCUS

"Today Was A Fairytale" and "Love Story" are lovely, I wouldn't have minded seeing either hit #1. Just really earnest, enjoyable love songs without pretention.

According to the latest pop bars, #2-4 are still selling .2 compared to Taylor. Because the sales of songs below #1 are normalized to the sales of the #1 song, one needs to use data of other songs to figure out how much the sales of the #1 has dropped (can't really figure it out when #1 is increasing). The pop bars just had an update. Taylor is #1. Let's look at a song that had "no" movement (color white). Songs #19 thru #21 had a white update but yet their numbers increased. If these numbers are recomputed to account for normalization, then Taylor dropped about 5-6% since the last update of 4.3 hrs earlier.

Taylor's enormous lead is ever so slowly starting to erode; #2 "Whistle" is now down only .25 against her song.

The Clear Channel deals are not payola, as we've discussed before. It's a radio promotion, for sure, but it's not an illegal practice. If it were, it would not keep on doing it, and "get away with it," and Billboard would not count that airplay. It's a legit practice.
Some singles keep the momentum after the initial airplay smashing, some don't.

ALEX CLARE - Too Close: 40.058 (+ 2.613) Updating from Kworb's site since Orkut won't do it anymore. What happened there? As great as Kworb's site is, Orkut was much more accurate. :( BRUNO MARS - Grenade: 14.281 (+ 3.375) wat Recurrents randomly fluctuate like that. We don't usually see that here since whoever it is at Orkut sticks to currents (except around Christmas), but I don't think it's anything outside of the norm.
