Guitarist-singer-songwriter Mato Nanji steps to the forefront next week as Indigenous, which is Going For Adds with "Fool Me Again." The song is from his Vanguard debut, Chasing the Sun, which drops in stores June 13. On previous Indigenous albums, Nanji was primarily a singer. For this Indigenous- and Steve Fishell-produced project, Nanji features his guitar skills.
Originally, Indigenous was formed in the late '90s by Nanji, two of his brothers and their sister, all of whom grew up as part of the Nakota Tribe of South Dakota. However, the group broke up, but Mato decided to continue the Indigenous name. "With us, we grew up together in this band, and we were still learning about ourselves and what we were capable of as musicians. After being together for so long, everyone was eager to try new directions. I feel really good about moving forward. There's almost a sense of liberation. And I also feel good that my brother and sister will have a chance to express themselves, too."
