This is Live's first single off their 7th album, 'Songs From Black Mountain.' The song will hit radio on 1/17. As a fan, I'm really looking forward to this one. In the meantime a short clip is available at listentolive.com/

I like the clip, it's a lot poppier than their older singles.
Judging by the clip this will do well on Hot AC and could have a chance on Pop late spring-summer.

I guess they've formally given up on Alternative.
Upon the sneak preview, I wouldn't say I'm impressed by what I hear, but even when they are at their poppiest, they remain much more underrated than most other artists that find their way on Hot AC.
Live have been unfairly screwed over since the "Throwing Copper" era. Radio at large just didn't have any faith in them following that era, and finally when singles like "Heaven" did get faith put into them, their own record company was faithless in them, and ironically "Birds Of Pray" sold even less than "V" in the end, despite "V" having no hits.
I think this can do something at Hot AC, but I'm under the cynical notion that their record company is going to continue to neglect Live's fullest potential and that will not only cripple the album, but even affect the single from peaking as high as it should.
Sincerely, Noah Eaton

"The River" is set to be released on January 30, and has already been picked up by 2 stations, and has 42 spins this week. I'll be curious to see how this does on the charts. You can listen to it at listentolive.com/ and download it at www.fansoflive.com/mp3/featured.html (2nd track from the bottom). I still think "Love Shines" would've been a better choice as first single. Download that one (live version) from that page also. Maybe this will be the 2nd single if "The River" has some success.

It's hard to fully blame the band for moving more in the poppier direction, with the way radio in general have treated them like dirt unfairly for a decade.
I will say however this is one of my least favorite singles ever by the band. Even so, it's still better than most of the content this format picks up.
Grade By Live Standards: D+ Grade Compared To Hot AC: B

This is somewhat good. They haven't really blown me away since Throwing Copper but I hope this is a success for them. It's kinda sad to see them having to resort to HAC (again) but hopefully they'll give this song a chance.

I like it, but it's the poppiest they've ever sounded!

The River LIVE Producer(s): Jim Wirt Genre: POP Label: Epic (CD promo)
Long-lived rock outfit Live has evolved from appealing to testy 15-year-old boys to speaking to an adult top 40 audience. That is all good, considering that Ed Kowalczyk and company have always been a bit more cerebral than required by the average teen. "The River," the first single from Live's seventh album ("Songs From Black Mountain," due April 11) and Epic bow, is a bit more mainstream than the traditional Live single; singer Kowalczyk is less melodramatic than usual—perhaps disappointing to steadfast disciples—but the melody, as always, is memorable and the performance stellar. In 2006, Live sounds a bit more like Train than itself, but mellowing with age is a natural process. A formidable chart hit, if not exemplary along the lines of "Dolphin Cries" or "Lightning Crashes." We are still happy to have the guys back.

This song will do very well on the Hot AC charts/ VH1.. and I think it could do even better on the pop charts. Live would be very new to the pop audience, and I can see Live being a huge success in 2006.

I hate that this flopped so bad but I'm not surprised.
Anyway, the album has already leaked. It's not bad but I'm not overwhelmed either. My favorites are "The River", "Mystery", "Wings", "Love Shines", "Where Do We Go from Here" and "Home." I don't know what they're thinking waiting until June to release the album in the US when it's already leaked and been released mostly everywhere else. They're just asking for a flop.
