For the 10/21 chart, "You And Me" is at #1 (probably for the last time) with spins of 2645. Now, that is incredibly low for a #1 song. In fact, I was looking through some old charts the other day and couldn't find anything lower than this. Could this be a record-setting "accomplishment"? Interestingly, during my search I came across the chart for the week ending 3/12/2004. The #10 song on that list had 2679 plays -- that's 34 more plays than our current #1! I just think it seems funny that the number TEN song on one chart can have more than the #1 on a different chart. What's the highest # of spins a #1 song has ever gotten? Off the top of my head, the most I remember is "Every Morning" getting 4100+ back in April of 1999, but I'm sure there have been higher.

I wonder are there that many more songs in rotation now which is cutting into the number of spins the top song gets?

I don't know what the record is spinwise, but many songs have gone over the 4000 spin mark, including BOBD earlier this year. I wouldn't doubt if the record was held by Smooth. In at least one of its 23 weeks @ #1, I'm sure it had an insane number of spins.

For the 10/14 chart, "Follow Through" by Gavin DeGraw is now in its 24th total week on the chart. It was allowed to re-enter from recurrent status a few weeks ago, and it holds steady at #31 this week. In its original run, it peaked at #27. Since it fell off the chart in November 2003, the gap between chart runs is nearly 2 years (Nov '03-Oct '05). Other songs have returned to the chart after a relatively long break: "Secret Garden" by Bruce Springsteen fell off the chart in June '95, but returned in March '97, racking up a total of 22 weeks on the chart. "To the Moon and Back" by Savage Garden fell off the chart in Sep '97 then returned in Jul '98, ending up with a total of 18 weeks on the chart. A couple of songs returned after a few months off: "I'll Stand by You" by the Pretenders fell off the chart in March '95, then returned in September '95, ending up with 29 weeks on the chart. "Time of Your Life" by Green Day fell off the chart in March '98, then returned in June '98, racking up a total of 31 weeks on the chart. What about "Follow Through" by Gavin DeGraw? Didn't that hit the chart in 2003? I remember it getting some airplay, but I don't remember how well it did. Yeah, I believe the song peaked at #29 (or so) back in 2003 and was automatically booted off after it hit its 20th week.

However, I would agree that "Smooth" would probably hold the record.

I was actually wondering what the LOWEST number of spins for a #1 song was ("You And Me" is my best guess). As for the highest number of spins, I believe that record goes to "This Love" by Maroon 5, which had 4400+ spins (I can't remember off the top of my head). But I can't say for sure, since R&R began showing spins just a few years ago. I'm curious to see how many spins "Smooth" had though.
By the way, "Unwell" by matchbox twenty had 4361 plays at one time.

But I have no idea when the website began showing spins, since I never really looked at it.

At that time, they didn't show spins. They would only give the top 30, and next to each song was a little picture of the album. Of course, they didn't always have the cover art to most albums, so they ended up putting a little R&R logo instead. It was stupid! There were no "New & Actives" or "Recurrents" or "GFAs." Just the top 30.

Breaking News:
In only its 7th week in the top 40 (and only its 6th week in the top 20), "Wake Me Up When September Ends" by Green Day has reached the #1 spot! Yay!

They just barely made it too, just two spins ahead of "Photograph" by Nickelback.
I hope they hold Nickelback out of the top spot, because I don't like that song.

His spin total was 1137, but the chart was ranked by points. The highest spin total on the chart went to "Now and Forever" by Richard Marx with 1183 spins.

With the debut of "Hung Up", Madonna now once again becomes the person with most hits to chart on Hot AC with 17. Of course if Sheryl Crow charts again she will tie Madonna once again.

I'm pretty sure Follow Through made it to #20 for one of the updates about two years ago to this date, maybe December 2003, I'm not sure. Either way, it's a great song.
She Says I'm pretty sure was released before Collide, but didn't do nearly as well as Perfect Time Of Day, which I wish was re-released, but it definitely went Top 20 on this format I believe for at least one update.

It was the week that all charts, with the exception of Country, switched from points to plays.

April is when they stopped using ranked playlists from stations, and started with number of plays... but rather than ranking each song by total plays, R&R used some sort of formula (which I assume factored in audience) to come up with a point total for each song. So from April through the end of 1994, songs were ranked by points, not plays.

I guess that would account for the handful of songs that went Top 10 and then disappeared like nobody's business (Living in Danger, for one), then?[/font]

I'm curious too about the fastest-climbing #1. Hopefully someone else has the answer, either for just the Top 20 or for the whole chart. The record for the whole chart is 6 weeks. It's a tie between: - "I'll Be There for You" by the Rembrandts - "Thank U" by Alanis Morissette Both songs debuted on the entire chart at #14, then reached #1 in their 6th week on the chart. Did you hear AT20 this past weekend? Casey did a similar story, only he came up with different results. Both "With Arms Wide Open" and "Wake Me Up When September Ends" were the only songs this decade to make it to #1 in 6 weeks. I'm assuming it's because AT20 was using a different chart in parts of 2000 and 2001.

This Green Day / Nickelback fight has really got me wondering: Is this the closest #1 battle ever?
Two weeks ago, Green Day had only a 2-spin advantage over Nickelback, and it looks as though there might be several trade-offs at #1 (which has never really happened before).
Has anybody ever seen a tie or a 1-spin lead at the top?

Didn't Ricky Martin also go up real quick too? I'm curious too about the fastest-climbing #1. Hopefully someone else has the answer, either for just the Top 20 or for the whole chart. "Livin' La Vida Loca" reached #1 in its 9th chart week on Hot AC. Counting only top 20 weeks, it reached #1 in its 7th week. Didn't Ricky Martin also go up real quick too? I have a quick observation regarding the 11/18/05 chart.
Not too long ago, "Wake Me Up When September Ends" leaped 7 notches to enter the top 10 at #5. This week, "Because Of You" also leaps 7 notches, entering the top 10 at #4. Is this the highest debut within the top 10?

If by "ever" you mean any chart, yes, there was a tie in February 2003 on the CHR chart. Both "Beautiful" by Christina Aguilera and "I'm With You" by Avril Lavigne had 8,752 spins. Lavigne, however, was placed at #1.

I believe Kelly does hold the record for highest entry into the top 10. I could not find any other song in my records that entered the top 10 at #4.
