What happened to all the big summer anthems? There have been almost none this year. We had many last year. I feel like we've been robbed.

I'm actually talking about hits that became hot during the summer. Last year we had
Hoobastank - "The Reason" Maroon 5 - "This Love" Los Lonely Boys - "Heaven" Blink-182 - "I Miss You" Switchfoot - "Meant To Live" Maroon 5 - "She Will Be Loved" Finger Eleven - "One Thing" 311 - "Love Song" Usher - "Yeah"
among others. Okay, not all of these songs were released during the summer, but still, a lot of them became sounds of the summer.
Take a look at the chart for July 23, 2004:
01 Hoobastank - The Reason (Island/IDJMG) 02 Maroon 5 - This Love (Octone/J/RMG) 03 Los Lonely Boys - Heaven (Or/Epic) 04 Counting Crows - Accidentally In Love (DreamWorks/Geffen) 05 3 Doors Down - Away From The Sun (Republic/Universal) 06 Nickelback - Someday (Roadrunner/IDJMG) 07 Switchfoot - Meant To Live (Red Ink/Columbia) 08 Evanescence - My Immortal (Wind-up) 09 311 - Love Song (Maverick/Volcano/Zomba) 10 Five For Fighting - 100 Years (Aware/Columbia) 11 3 Doors Down - Here Without You (Republic/Universal) 12 Sheryl Crow - Light In Your Eyes (A&M/Interscope) 13 Gavin DeGraw - I Don't Want To Be (J/RMG) 14 Matchbox Twenty - Bright Lights (Atlantic) 15 Finger Eleven - One Thing (Wind-up) 16 Alanis Morissette - Everything (Maverick/Reprise) 17 Train - Ordinary (Columbia) 18 Calling - Our Lives (RCA/RMG) 19 Avril Lavigne - Don't Tell Me (Arista/RMG) 20 Maroon 5 - She Will Be Loved (Octone/J/RMG) 21 Uncle Kracker - Rescue (Lava) 22 Nickelback - Feelin' Way Too Damn Good (Roadrunner/IDJMG) 23 Jason Mraz - Curbside Prophet (Atlantic) 24 Richard Marx - When You're Gone (Manhattan/EMC) 25 Avion - Seven Days Without You (Independent) 26 Scissor Sisters - Take Your Mama (Universal) 27 Blink-182 - I Miss You (Geffen) 28 Martina McBride - This One's For The Girls (RCA) 29 Sarah McLachlan - Stupid (Arista/RMG) 30 Britney Spears - Everytime (Jive/Zomba) 31 Yellowcard - Ocean Avenue (Capitol) 32 Dido - Don't Leave Home (Arista/RMG) 33 Butterfly Boucher - Another White Dash (A&M/Interscope) 34 Lenny Kravitz - Where Are We Runnin'? (Virgin) 35 George Michael - Amazing (Epic) 36 Default - All She Wrote (TVT) 37 Jennifer Marks - Live (Bardic) 38 Melissa Etheridge - This Moment (Island/IDJMG) 39 Seether f/Amy Lee - Broken (Wind-up) 40 MercyMe - Here With Me (INO/Curb)
Now take a look at the chart for July 22, 2005:
01 Lifehouse - You And Me (Geffen) 02 Rob Thomas - Lonely No More (Atlantic) 03 Coldplay - Speed Of Sound (Capitol) 04 3 Doors Down - Let Me Go (Republic/Universal) 05 Kelly Clarkson - Behind These Hazel Eyes (RCA/RMG) 06 Gavin DeGraw - Chariot (J/RMG) 07 Green Day - Boulevard Of Broken Dreams (Reprise) 08 Kelly Clarkson - Since U Been Gone (RCA/RMG) 09 Anna Nalick - Breathe (2am) (Columbia) 10 Howie Day - Collide (Epic) 11 Collective Soul - Better Now (El Music Group) 12 Rob Thomas - This Is How A Heart Breaks (Atlantic) 13 Better Than Ezra - A Lifetime (Artemis) 14 Green Day - Holiday (Reprise) 15 Goo Goo Dolls - Give A Little Bit (Warner Bros.) 16 Train - Get To Me (Columbia) 17 Jason Mraz - Wordplay (Atlantic) 18 Dave Matthews Band - American Baby (RCA/RMG) 19 Josh Kelley - Only You (Hollywood) 20 Gwen Stefani - Hollaback Girl (Interscope) 21 Backstreet Boys - Incomplete (Jive/Zomba Label Group) 22 Avril Lavigne - Fall To Pieces (Arista/RMG) 23 Mariah Carey - We Belong Together (Island/IDJMG) 24 Vertical Horizon - Forever (Hybrid) 25 Low Millions - Statue (Manhattan/EMC) 26 Keith Urban - You'll Think Of Me (Capitol/EMC) 27 Courtney Jaye - Can't Behave (Island/IDJMG) 28 Def Leppard - No Matter What (Island/IDJMG) 29 Gwen Stefani - Cool (Interscope) 30 Simple Plan - Untitled (Lava) 31 Pat McGee Band - Must Have Been Love (Kirtland) 32 Michael Tolcher - Mission Responsible (Octone) 33 Black Eyed Peas - Don't Phunk With My Heart (A&M/Interscope) 34 Keane - Everybody's Changing (Interscope) 35 Marc Broussard - Home (Island/IDJMG) 36 Papa Roach - Scars (Geffen) 37 Hope Partlow - Who We Are (Virgin) 38 Ben Folds - Landed (Epic) 39 Weezer - Beverly Hills (Geffen) 40 Will Smith - Switch (Interscope)
Not bad . . . but it seems as though it's missing some huge hits. Remember, "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams" and "Since U Been Gone" were released during the winter. Other than that, the rest of these songs don't seem to have much longevity IMO.
Does anybody else agree with me? Or do you think I'm over-reacting a little?

Whether you like them or not, I think Gwen's "Hollaback Girl" and Mariah's "We Belong Together" were definitely anthems this past Summer.
