This one is going for adds on Triple A. It's the first track off their upcoming (and highly-anticipated!) best-of/greatest hits collection. Oh boy.

Triple A adds? Wow, that is a shocker for me. Sugar Ray is not a Triple A artist IMO.
It is also going for HAC adds.

Yeah, I wonder what makes this song so different that it would be considered Triple A friendly. Nonetheless, it's going for adds on Triple A according to R&R.

I don't know about Triple A, but on Hot AC it's a great summer hit!! I wish record companies would quit wasting money sending songs to formats that won't play them. That could be money enough for another single down the road. Pop & Hot AC I can see but Triple A why?.

I still hear "When It's Over", "Every Morning", "Someday" and a version of "Fly" without the rap vocals frequently on KINK in Portland, as well as I used to hear them very much on KBCO. After the trainwrecks of "Mr. Bartender" and "Answer The Phone", I don't expect this to really get there, but Sugar Ray have a notable presence as a recurrent artist on AAA. Sincerely, Noah Eaton

I'd like to see Sugar Ray score another yet, however unlikely it may be. They are a fun band that makes catchy songs and don't take themselves too seriously. Plus they have good energy live. Hopefully this can at least crack the top twenty on HotAC. Heck, if anytime is right for a comeback by a band that achieved success in the mid 90s, it's right now...with the Backstreet Boys, Will Smith, and many other 90s artists getting top ten airplay on pop.

A couple of Triple A stations have added this, including...KBCO, who, like I said, play a lot of ugar Ray recurrents! Maybe KINK in Portland, who do likewise, will follow their lead. Sincerely, Noah Eaton

Thanks for the link. I like this, but for some reason I don't see it getting a ton of airplay. Maybe when I hear a hi-fi version of the song (when I buy the album) I'll be able to make a better judgement.

My prediction for this fun summer song is #13 I say it'll run about like "Sunrise" by Duran Duran did...

My prediction for this fun summer song is #13 I say it'll run about like "Sunrise" by Duran Duran did... That's an interesting comparison to make. I think Sunrise might have benefited from a decent amount of promotion. I can't see Sugar Ray getting a lot of promotion for their greatest hits CD. Mr. Bartender and Is She Really Going Out With Him both made it to around #20 at Hot AC. My guess is that they will be lucky to make the top 20 with this.

I picked up the Greatest Hits CD today. After listening to Shot of Laughter a few times I think it's pretty good, but it's just not as catchy as Fly, Someday, Every Morning, or When It's Over.
Shot of Laughter is not getting a whole lot of airplay yet. It only has 89 spins at Hot AC during the last week.

Shot of Laughter is not getting a whole lot of airplay yet. It only has 89 spins at Hot AC during the last week. That's a damn shame because this is the perfect song for the format this time of year. They need to let go of the songs they still play 50 times a week that remind listeners of the winter and start playing some fun, light hearted summer music instead. Not that I'm surprised this song is DOA though. It is disappointing that it won't even surpass the #20 peaks of the two singles from their previous album though, since they both sucked ass and this song is actually good.

I find myself utilizing my CD player in my car more often these days. I like some upbeat music while I'm driving during summer. I'm a little surprised it's not picking up more airplay by now. But it's still early, so I'm not going to give up on it yet. I need some more Sugar Ray on the radio... Oh, wait, I just bought the "Best Of" CD so I can listen all I want. :) (Btw, this CD does not have "Mr. Bartender" on it. It's the only chart hit that's not included.)

This really is a great single. It's their best in years, and I'd argue is their best since "Falls Apart"
The problem is, in my opinion, they released a slew of bad singles leading up to "Chasin' You Around" following the success of "14:59". First you had the totally cheesy "When It's Over", then the perverted "Answer The Phone" which had all that familiar "do it again" lyrics, then their new low, "Mr. Bartender" and finally the mediocre Joe Jackson cover.
"Chasin' You Around", to me at least, was their first decent single in four years. It's a shame it couldn't have been the lead single of that album.
Now, they release this single which brings back the spirit of "14:59", which is also a perfect summer anthem that will not be.
Maybe if they had released more decent singles between the eras of "14:59" and their Greatest Hits, they may well be more alive today than they actually are now.
Sincerely, Noah Eaton

Well, "Is She Really Going Out With Him" is number 8 in the top 10 most downloaded Sugar Ray songs at iTunes. And, if you get rid of the repeats (multiple versions of "Every Morning", "Someday", etc.), "Is She Really..." turns out to be the number 5 most downloaded song. Currently, it's even above "Falls Apart" and "Answer the Phone".
And, before their Greatest Hits CD diluted the iTunes library with repeats, "Mr. Bartender" was often in the top 12 or 13 most downloaded Sugar Ray songs, out of 80 or so. Apparently, consumers didn't hate the song as much as radio implied...
So, I have to question whether Sugar Ray's lack of radio success in 2003 had anything to do with the quality or "like-a-bility" of the singles themselves...but, that's radio, right?
Now we have "Shot of Laughter". The polar opposite of "Mr. Bartender", which was a VERY risky single. "Shot" is a uber-conservative, uber-traditional Sugar Ray single...and it's still having trouble getting airplay.
Well, here's hoping this song gets the fair chance it deserves in the coming weeks...

Heard this on my Hot AC station just a few minutes ago (it's 2:15 am now). I figured I would never hear this on the radio. It's getting virtually no airplay nationwide... It has increased from 112 spins to 162 spins at Hot AC in the past few weeks, but it should be doing much better than that by now.

My 2 HAC stations here at the shore (WAYV and WJLK) always used to LOVE Sugar Ray. They played them even more than most stations did back in the day. They still play their golds nonstop. And neither one has added this song. It's a shame because this is such a beachy area and this song would really find an audience here, so what if it doesn't nationwide?

It's on 19 stations up from 12 last week. Once all 19 stations put into atleast 20 spins a week it will be around 400 spins and hopefully adds keep straggling in every week and it eventually hits top 40,30, even 20 would be great. Stranger things have happened. If all 19 stations will spin it 20 times it will go top 40 anyway at hot ac.

^The problem is its a summer song, so unless stations add it within the next 2 or 3 weeks, they won't.

Mr. Bartender", which was a VERY risky single No it wasn't. It was plain bad, that's all. Anyway, yeah, this is an ok song, but I really don't thing radio will give them another chance, even if this is their last single. The interest in them has vanished.

It's not the song, it's the label. Once your sales take a hit Atlantic Records decides you are no longer worth their time nor the money. Atlantic forgets the artists who carried the label during the mid to late 90's. It's the reason why Hootie left and is having way more success with Vanguard. Sugar Ray's song is out there on it's own with very little backing, it's not their fault.

I didn't see it advertised anywhere. In any event, the song is up 1 spin from last week.. Still climbing!

I never thought I'd say this for a Sugar Ray single, but "Shot of Laughter" is by far among the most underrated singles of the year.
Sincerely, Noah Eaton
